Smoking is a well-established risk factor for both ocular diseases and lung cancer, yet its impact on eye health remains underrecognized. Tobacco exposure contributes to oxidative stress, inflammation, and vascular damage, accelerating the progression of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma. Emerging evidence suggests that ocular manifestations in chronic smokers may serve as early indicators of systemic diseases, including lung cancer. Background: Elderly individuals with physical and psychological challenges face a high risk of falls. This study aimed to assess the incidence, health effects of, and risk factors for falls among those aged 60-79 years old in Thailand's three southern border provinces.

Methods: A community cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2021 and September 2022. Questionnaires were administered though verbal face-to-face conversations. Descriptive statistics, the Chi-square test, Fisher’s exact test, and logistic regression were used.

• Primary outcome: Mean disease alleviation (MDA) - calculated value based on improvement of AHI adjusted by compliance.

Characterizing imaging performance requires a multidisciplinary approach that evaluates various interconnected parameters, including dosage optimization and dynamic accuracy. Radiation dose and dynamic accuracy are challenged by patient motion that results in poor image quality. These challenges are more prevalent in the brain/cardiac pediatric patient imaging, as they relate to excess radiation dose that may be associated with various complications. Research on the relationship between resistin levels, metabolic health, and obesity has produced inconsistent findings across different ethnic groups, making it unclear whether lower resistin levels are associated with these conditions in Mexican-Americans. This cross-sectional study investigated the relationship between resistin, metabolic health, and obesity in an adult Mexican-American cohort (n = 1511) using multivariable linear regression analysis. Related adipokines (leptin and adiponectin) were measured simultaneously. Participants were categorized into four groups by metabolic health (healthy/unhealthy) and obesity (obese/non-obese) status. “Metabolically unhealthy” was defined as ≥2 cardiometabolic abnormalities. Sugammadex and neostigmine are two common drugs used to reverse neuromuscular blockade in anesthesia, but they differ in mechanism of action, side effects, and cost.

Sugammadex provides rapid reversal, has fewer side effects, and has a lower risk of bradycardia than neostigmine. This scoping review examines the frequency of bradycardia in adult surgical patients receiving sugammadex versus neostigmine.

Methods

A scoping review was completed of peer-reviewed articles comparing the incidence of bradycardia in adult surgical patients after the administration of sugammadex and neostigmine for neuromuscular blockade reversal. Over the past two decades, the United States has experienced a substantial rise in opioid overdoses and related fatalities. Morphine is a frequent prescription for pain management following traumatic procedures and contributes to potential tolerance and dependency with prolonged use. By reconstructing the structure of morphine, adverse side effects may be eliminated. Previous studies have identified several morphine derivatives that, in theory, could result in fewer side effects. This was determined by a decreased pKₐ of the biochemically active amine group to promote the selective binding in peripheral opioid receptors within inflamed tissue (pH=6-6.5). Ceftibuten is being developed in combination with the oral prodrug of avibactam. Outpatient isolates (n = 500) from 11 US states underwent susceptibility testing with manual broth microdilution. Ceftibuten had susceptibility rates of 64% (CLSI) and 23% (EUCAST). Ceftibuten-avibactam achieved 96.4% inhibition at MIC ≤ 1 µg/mL. Susceptibility rates were as follows: cefpodoxime (2.6%), ceftriaxone (1%), ceftazidime-avibactam (99.6%), tebipenem (89%), ertapenem (94.4%), levofloxacin (26.6%), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (40.2%), and fosfomycin (96.8%). Ceftibuten-avibactam demonstrates potent in vitro activity against cephalosporin non-susceptible isolates.

Rickettsial pathogens are an endemic and emergent source of disease in Texas, with a historically high rate of transmission along the United States-Mexico border. To better understand the prevalence and risk factors for spotted fever group Rickettsia (SFGR) and typhus group Rickettsia (TGR) along the Texas-Mexico border, we conducted a seroprevalence study of adults residing in Starr County, Texas (N = 616). Plasma samples were screened for IgG reactivity to SFGR and TGR using commercially available ELISA. ELISA-positive samples were confirmed using a dual spot IgG indirect immunofluorescent assay. Chronic conditions increasingly strain health systems, which are often unprepared for these demands. This study examines the burden of conditions requiring acute versus chronic care, including sequelae. Conditions and sequelae from the Global Burden of Diseases Study 2019 were classified into acute or chronic care categories. Data were analysed by age, sex, and socio-demographic index, presenting total numbers and contributions to burden metrics such as Disability-Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), Years Lived with Disability (YLD), and Years of Life Lost (YLL). Background/Objectives: Nifuroxazide (Nfz) is a drug that has been used as a scaffold for designing antimicrobial and antiparasitic agents. This study aimed to synthesize and evaluate in vitro of Nfz and twenty-five 4-hydroxybenzhydrazone derivatives as potential anti-Trypanosoma cruzi, anti-Leishmania mexicana, and anti-Mycobacterium tuberculosis agents.

This project investigates patients' perceptions of nurse practitioner (NP) care versus physician (MD) care, the factors influencing these perceptions, and patients' understanding of NP scope of practice. A cross-sectional design was used, gathering quantitative data through an anonymous one-time survey distributed via Qualtrics, open for three months. Questions were based on The Watson Caritas Patient Score (WCPS) and the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Survey (HCAHPS). Amyloid beta (Aβ42 and Aβ40) aggregation, along with neurofibrillary tangles, is one of the major neurotoxic events responsible for the onset of Alzheimer's disease. Many potent peptide-based inhibitors mainly focusing on central hydrophobic core Aβ16-20 (KLVFF) have been reported in recent years. Herein, we report pentapeptides -, based on the β-turn-inducing fragment Aβ19-23 (FFAED). Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections rank among the most prevalent communicable diseases of humans, yet detection of these parasites is mostly restricted to identifying active infection through fecal examinations. Currently, there are no commercial diagnostic tools to identify a prior whipworm or hookworm exposure, and the few serological assays for roundworm infection have not been well validated for crossreactivity or infections in humans. A 5-year-old Pompitz presented with anorexia and vomiting. Radiographs showed a half-moon-shaped mass in the left cranial abdomen. A large cyst was identified near the left pancreas on ultrasound. Computed tomography revealed a fluid-attenuating mass with rim enhancement in the pancreas. Laboratory tests identified Staphylococcus warneri in the cystic lesion, and pancreatic pseudocyst with infection was suspected. Splenic Artery Aneurysm (SAA) is a visceral artery aneurysm affecting less than one percent of the general population. Most individuals affected are women in the 5th to 6th decade of life or those with pre-existing conditions including atherosclerosis, portal hypertension, and connective tissue disorders. The Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has uprooted college students from the traditional college environment and placed additional stressors on them, yet its effects are still emerging. In the present study, 329 college students (Mage=19.74, SDage= 1.96) completed measures of generalized anxiety, behavioral coping, and adverse childhood experiences between July 2020 and March 2021 of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is hypothesized that more adverse childhood experiences would be associated with more maladaptive behavioral coping strategies. In recent literature, there has been a question of how to surgically manage patients with recurrent ipsilateral breast cancer due to the possibility of aberrant lymphatic drainage pattern secondary to a previous axillary lymph node dissection. The use of preoperative lymphoscintigraphy to map possible aberrant drainage patterns prior to surgery remains investigational, necessitating the need for further management guidelines.

Introduction: Lumbar radiculopathy is a common clinical problem and remains a controversial diagnosis at fundamental levels, including its diagnostic criteria, pathophysiology, and optimal treatment. Patients with lumbar radiculopathy may improve with either conservative or surgical treatment; the specific treatment chosen is based on patient preferences, priorities of care, and comorbidities. However, there is limited evidence from clinical studies to support treatment choice in daily practice. The purpose of this literature review is to summarize evidence regarding the recurrence of symptoms following conservative treatments and surgical treatments for patients with lumbar radiculopathy.

Introduction: Concussions in football pose significant health risks, requiring the implementation of effective protective gear to reduce the incidence of head injuries. Helmets and mouthguards are standard equipment, but their true effectiveness remains debated.

Objective: This study aimed to systematically evaluate the efficacy of modern football protective gear, specifically helmets and mouthguards, in the prevention of concussions.

Methods: Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, and Embase. A total of 3,894 studies were reviewed, and 35 studies met the inclusion criteria. Independent reviewers analyzed the studies to determine the impact of helmets and …
