Rowing is a full-body sport that requires technique, strength and speed, yet allows athletes to compete at all ages. The rowing stroke is completed sitting down with the hip flexors in a shortened position and lower back muscles activated. The combination of short and overactive muscles leads female rowers to be susceptible to lower cross syndrome and back pain. This study examined the prevalence of LCS in female rowers and the effect of PNF stretching of the hip flexors on the LCS. LCS was examined using a posture assessment and Thomas tests. Ecdysterone, often dubbed a “natural steroid,” has garnered significant attention among athletes for its reputed growth-promoting and anabolic properties. Unlike synthetic anabolic steroids, which are classified as controlled substances, ecdysteroids remain largely unregulated in many countries and are widely marketed as dietary supplements. Notably, ecdysterone has been included in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) monitoring program, highlighting its potential impact on athletic performance and raising questions about its regulation. Emerging evidence indicates that, unlike traditional anabolic steroids that act primarily via the Androgen Receptor (AR), ecdysterone’s anabolic effects may be mediated through Estrogen Receptors (ERs), particularly Estrogen Receptor beta (ERβ). …

Post activation potentiation is the short increase of power output following a heavy exercise. This effect could be due to several mechanisms, the most popular are increased sensitivity of actin and myosin to calcium or alpha motoneuron reactivity. The idea behind using the accommodating resistance is that eccentrics get lighter throughout the movement to avoid sticking points whilst changing the strength curve of the exercise. Cancer genomic studies have identified frequent alterations in genes encoding components of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex, including SMARCA4 and ARID1A. Importantly, clinical reports indicate that SMARCA4-mutant lung cancers respond poorly to immunotherapy and have dismal prognosis. In this study, we corroborated the clinical findings by using immune-humanized, syngeneic, and genetically engineered mouse models of lung cancer harboring SMARCA4 deficiency. Specifically, models with SMARCA4 loss showed decreased response to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy associated with significantly reduced infiltration of dendritic cells and CD4+ T cells into the tumor microenvironment. The mental health of youth living with patients with HIV needs focused attention. The primary source of psychological distress they experience may stem from social exclusion. Therefore, the current study was designed to explore the relationship between social exclusion and mental health among youths affected by parental HIV/AIDS in rural China.

Methods

297 youths affected by parental HIV/AIDS were recruited to completed questionnaires of social exclusion, perceived stress, future orientation and mental health. The bootstrap method was used to examine the mediation effects.

BACKGROUND: Estimated plasma volume status (ePVS) correlates with intravascular congestion and prognosis in patients with heart failure. The ePVS relationship with invasive hemodynamic profiling and clinical outcomes in patients with liver cirrhosis (LC) remains unclear.

METHODS: This single-center retrospective cohort study included LC patients who underwent right heart catheterization (RHC) between 2018 and 2023. Estimated plasma volume status (ePVS) was calculated using the Strauss-derived Duarte formula, with patients classified into high (> 5.5%) and low-ePVS (≤ 5.5%) groups. Cox-multivariable analysis was used to determine if ePVS was associated with all-cause mortality within 1 year post-RHC among transplant-free patients.

The prevalence of human trafficking continues to increase worldwide, and the implementation of human trafficking education and victim identification within institutions is slow to catch up. The Oregon State Hospital is a psychiatric in-patient hospital that currently does not provide human trafficking education or a screening tool for staff and does not know how to provide treatment to trafficked victims. Interviews were conducted with employed social workers at the Oregon State Hospital to obtain a baseline understanding of their previous education, training, and knowledge of human trafficking to aid in the creation of a trafficking screening tool. A large body of evidence suggests that single- and multiple-strain probiotics and synbiotics could have roles in the management of specific gastrointestinal disorders. However, ongoing concerns regarding the quality and heterogeneity of the clinical data, safety in vulnerable populations, and the lack of regulation of products containing live microbes are barriers to widespread clinical use. Background: Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a global health concern affecting 10.5% of the adult population and is projected to rise significantly in the coming decades. Lifestyle modification programs, such as the Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP), can effectively reduce T2D risk among individuals with prediabetes. HIV prevention and treatment disparities persist among men in Virginia, particularly in racial and ethnic minority groups. This study examined how insurance type and demographic factors influence prescriptions for antiretroviral treatment (ART) and preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP). Addressing these disparities is critical to advancing public health equity and reducing HIV rates. The purpose was to assess whether age, race, ethnicity, region, and insurance type are associated with the type of oral HIV medication prescribed. Importance: While epinephrine is commonly administered in children with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) via an intraosseous (IO) or intravenous (IV) route, the optimal route of epinephrine delivery is unclear.

Objective: To evaluate the association between the route of epinephrine administration (IO or IV) and patient outcomes after pediatric OHCA.

Design, setting, and participants: Retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients (aged < 18 years) with nontraumatic OHCA treated by emergency medical services who received prehospital epinephrine either via an IO or IV route. Patients were included in the Resuscitation Outcomes Consortium Epidemiologic Registry, a prospective OHCA registry at 10 sites in the US and Canada from April 2011 to June 2015. Data analysis was performed from May 2024 to April 2025.

Exposure: Epinephrine administration route: IO or IV route.

In this Outlook, Huang et al. discuss a study in this issue of Genes & Development by Fraire et al. that shows that a deficiency in miRNA processors Drosha and Dicer and consequent cell cycle gene derepression promote pineoblastoma development. The authors highlight the heterogeneity of pineoblastoma's pathogenic mechanisms and its implications for therapeutic interventions in the clinic.

Cell plasticity is a hallmark of cancer, enabling tumor cells to acquire multiple phenotypes responsible for tumor progression, metastasis, and therapy resistance. In this issue of the JCI, Kawai and colleagues leveraged genetically engineered mouse models (GEMM) of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) to demonstrate that loss of Pbrm1, a member of the SWI/SNF complex, drives dedifferentiation and aggressive tumor features. Pbrm1 loss activated a program of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and allowed the emergence of poorly differentiated histologies that are commonly associated with high recurrence rate and dismal prognosis. Hyaluronan (HA) in the extracellular matrix promotes epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) and metastasis; however, the mechanism by which the HA network constructed by cancer cells regulates cancer progression and metastasis in the tumor microenvironment (TME) remains largely unknown. In this study, inter-α-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 2 (ITIH2), an HA-binding protein, was confirmed to be secreted from mesenchymal-like lung cancer cells when cocultured with cancer-associated fibroblasts. ITIH2 expression is transcriptionally upregulated by the EMT-inducing transcription factor ZEB1, along with HA synthase 2 (HAS2), which positively correlates with ZEB1 expression. Background: Melanoma brain metastases (MBM) have a unique molecular profile compared to extracranial metastases (ECM). Description of the biological features and clinical outcomes of MBM will facilitate the design of rational therapies.

Methods: We examined the mutational landscape and gene expression profiles of MBM (74 patients) and ECM (34 patients) in paired patient samples from a previously published dataset with whole-exome sequencing (WES) and RNA sequencing (RNAseq) data from MD Anderson Cancer Center (MDACC). Manipulating biology through chemistry is older than the discipline of chemistry itself. Traditionally, selectivity of oral or intravenous drugs relied on preferential drug-receptor binding. A novel approach exploiting image-guided techniques to impart spatial selectivity opens up a wide range of new possibilities for study and manipulation of biology. Motivated initially by the poor prognosis for solid tumors such as liver cancer, we demonstrate the use of an extreme form of in vivo chemistry for targeted delivery of 2-propylpentanoyl chloride in a swine model. Seasonal influenza viruses cause significant global illness and death annually, and the potential spillover of avian H5N1 poses a serious pandemic threat. Traditional influenza vaccines target the variable hemagglutinin (HA) protein, necessitating annual vaccine updates, while the slower-evolving neuraminidase (NA) presents a promising target for broader protection. We investigated the breadth of anti-NA B cell responses to seasonal influenza vaccination in humans. We screened plasmablast-derived monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from three donors, identifying 11 clonally distinct NA mAbs from 268 vaccine-specific mAbs. Screening digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) aims to identify breast cancer early when treatment is most effective, leading to reduced mortality. In addition to early detection, the information contained within DBT images may also inform subsequent risk stratification and guide risk-reducing management. Using transfer learning, we refined a model in the Joanne Knight Breast Health Cohort at Washington University, a cohort of 5,066 women with DBT screening (mean age, 54.6), among whom 105 were diagnosed with breast cancer (26 ductal carcinoma in situ). IMPORTANCE: Coccidioidomycosis is an underrecognized fungal infection that can cause serious illness and constitutes a considerable public health burden. The number of cases is likely substantially higher than the nationally reported total, as surveillance does not capture patients who do not seek medical care or who are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. Coccidioidomycosis is not reportable in all states, and cases not reported to public health entities are likewise missed. A systematic estimate of coccidioidomycosis burden is needed to raise awareness and inform public health interventions and policy.
