BACKGROUND: Of patients who receive standard concomitant chemoradiation (CRT; intensity-modulated radiation therapy [IMRT] plus cisplatin) for locally advanced head and neck cancer (HNC), approximately two-thirds will develop severe oral mucositis (SOM), limiting their ability to eat solids (WHO grade 3) or drink liquids (WHO grade 4). In a randomized, double-blind phase 2b trial, avasopasem manganese substantially reduced duration and incidence of SOM versus placebo. This phase 3 trial further assessed avasopasem's reduction of SOM due to CRT.

Structural brain differences in the thalamus and the cortex have been widely reported in schizophrenia (SCZ) relative to neurotypical control individuals (NCs). Most previous studies examined the thalamusas a whole as a single region of interest. In addition, findings in individuals at familial high risk for SCZ (FHRs) remain inconclusive. Rationale

Opioid-related overdose deaths involving benzodiazepines have increased in recent years, and prior studies have reported that clinically used benzodiazepines can enhance the respiratory-depressant effects of mu opioid receptor (MOR) agonists. TPA023B is an α1-sparing GABAA positive allosteric modulator developed as a potential anxiolytic with fewer benzodiazepine-typical side effects. However, it is unknown if and to what degree TPA023B can affect MOR-agonist induced respiratory depression.

Objectives

The current study compared the effects of either TPA023B or midazolam, alone and combined with fentanyl, on respiratory depression in rats, using whole-body plethysmography.

Previously healthy 11-year-old female, newly diagnosed Peutz-Jeghers Syndrome (PJS) confirmed by genetic testing STK11 PV (c.464+1dupG) underwent double balloon enteroscopy (DBE) after small bowel capsule showed multiple small intestinal polyps including >1.5 cms diameter. Pre-procedure, she completed a two-day MiraLAX clean out with >10 x 17g doses of MiraLAX each mixed in 6-8oz of water and other clear liquids. DBE completed with resection of 17 total small intestinal (SI), jejunal and ileal polyps. Procedure lasted approximately 4hrs and 5L of sterile water was used for underwater technique and irrigation.Sterile water was used for copious irrigation needed for direct visualization, and …

Background: It is unknown if prevalent vertebral fracture (PVFx) captured on bone density vertebral fracture assessment (VFA) images predicts incident CVD events. Methods: 11,760 individuals (mean [SD] age 75.7 [6.8] years, 94 % female) had VFA contemporaneously with bone densitometry in Manitoba, Canada, between February 2010 and December 2017, of whom 1919 (16.3 %) had ≥1 PVFx. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Artificial intelligence (AI), capable of analyzing vast volume of data rapidly, presents a promising solution to optimize literature screening for systematic reviews (SRs). Using the INSIDE (artificial INtelligence to Support Informed DEcision making) platform, we compared the performance of AI against the "gold standard" traditional SR method in the context of prostate cancer (PC) to assess whether AI could potentially improve efficiency and quality of screening.

Female sex is associated with higher incidence and risk of dementia. Estrogen may rep-resent one important mechanism contributing to the increase in incidence rates. In thisreview, we synthesize narratively the evidence for associations between estrogen—across the life course from menarche to menopause, estrogen-containing hormonalcontraception and hormone replacement therapies, and pregnancy—with potentialmodifiable risk factors for dementia. Since publication metrics influence career progression, we investigated publication rate disparities within a School of Public Health. We analysed 18 322 peer-reviewed publications by 513 affiliated researchers between 2014 and 2023 using multivariable regression models and network analysis to assess the impact of gender, ethnicity, job level and centrality in the School’s research network on publication rates. Background Universal health coverage (UHC) is a globally endorsed commitment aimed at ensuring equitable access to affordable healthcare services. Kenya's journey toward UHC has been marked by significant reforms, including the 2018 pilot phase and ongoing implementation phase (2020–2030). Using qualitative insights from policymakers and practitioners, this study explored Kenya’s progress, challenges, and opportunities to achieve UHC.

Methods Key informant interviews were conducted with 44 stakeholders across seven counties in Kenya.
