Community-based psychiatric staff, such as the Youth ACT teams that are being initiated across New York State, are at risk for compassion fatigue due to their proximity to the trauma of their patients. This literature review explores current evidence that is available on the topic and grapples with what can be done to support psychiatric staff who work in the community with patients who experience trauma.

We report an unusual case of a woman who presented with nonspecific symptoms of unilateral facial mass and bleeding from her lower lip over several weeks. The mass was found to be relatively fixed and irregular with destruction of facial bone as evidenced by imaging. Initial investigations indicated the possibility of multiple myeloma, which was later confirmed with serum protein electrophoresis and bone marrow biopsy. Cervical lymph node biopsy confirmed presence of plasmacytoid cells positive for CD 20.

Of 294 patients who had a PEG tube placed and subsequently underwent CT scan of the abdomen, in 20 patients the tube traverses the left lobe of the liver. Only one of these 20 patients had a major complication, indicating the transhepatic PEG is usually well tolerated, and, if detected can be left in place.

Ischemic strokes account for about 85% of cerebrovascular accidents. About 30–40% of ischemic strokes are classified as cryptogenic, which is defined as an ischemic stroke of the brain without a clear etiology. This case report presents a 56-year-old male with a history of uncontrolled hypertension who was admitted to a community hospital for cardioembolic versus cryptogenic stroke. It is essential for clinicians to be familiar with cryptogenic stroke and its implications for patient care.

We present two interesting cases of left ventricular free wall rupture following ST elevation myocardial infarction. First case was not identified on echocardiography and angiography despite high suspicion and later underwent emergent lifesaving mediastinal exploration and repair. Second case had a delayed presentation of inferior STEMI and cardiac tamponade. These cases highlight the diagnostic challenges and variable presentations of left ventricular free wall rupture (LVFWR).

She had clean imaging including transthoracic echo (TTE) and the Fibroelastoma was discovered only on a TEE in 2020. More than two hundred and sixty three cases of new-onset GCA occurring after mRNA vaccine administration are listed in the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System as of October 2024. Problem: The human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted infection that affects more than 80% of the population within the United States (Eisenhauer et al., 2020). HPV can develop into cervical, anogenital, and oropharyngeal cancers (Eisenhauer et al., 2020). About 4,000 individuals die from cervical cancer alone each year (O’Leary, 2022). Early treatment of ischemic stroke can significantly reduce disability and mortality rates. Stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) have shown potential as therapeutics for neurological disorders. This study explored whether intranasal administration of EVs from human bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) enhances forelimb motor function recovery in a mouse model of motor cortex stroke and investigated their mechanism of action, focusing on neuroinflammation. C57BL/6JRj mice received EV treatment of 0.1 × 10⁹ EVs per dose per day, 48 h post-stroke and twice weekly for four weeks. In post-acute and long-term care (PALTC) settings, inconsistent Abnormal Involuntary Movement Scale (AIMS) screening practices and limited clinician education contribute to under recognition and delayed treatment. BACKGROUND: With growing evidence pointing towards the potential of integrative oncology modalities (IOM) in addressing cancer and cancer-treatment related symptoms, research on IOM utilization and implementation is warranted. This study examines global stakeholder perspectives on integrative oncology (IO) utilization for supportive cancer care.

METHODS: Members of the Multinational Association of Supportive Care in Cancer (MASCC) and the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO) completed a survey on the utilization of IOM for supportive cancer care. IMPORTANCE: The prevalence of depression is higher in cancer survivors than in the general population. As the long-term cancer survivor population increases, it is increasingly important to understand risk factors for late-onset depression.

PURPOSE: Targeted therapies for metastatic prostate cancer are limited, highlighting the need for novel drug targets and mechanisms of action (MoA). Human kallikrein 2 (KLK2) is a prostate-specific antigen expressed across the prostate cancer disease continuum. However, it was not recognized as a therapeutic target for prostate cancer in the past due to limited evidence of its cell surface expression. In this study, we systematically characterized KLK2 expression in prostate cancer, confirmed its cell surface expression, and demonstrated the preclinical efficacy of three KLK2-targeting therapeutics with distinct MoA.

PURPOSE: Leiomyomas are benign smooth muscle tumors that commonly present in the uterus, soft tissue, skin, and gastrointestinal tract but in rare cases can also arise within the eye. Notably, intraocular leiomyomas often show slightly different histopathologic and immunohistochemical features, referred to as mesectodermal morphology, given their presumed neural crest origin. Genetic and cytogenetic alterations of intraocular leiomyomas, as well as their association with various clinical and histopathologic features, have not been previously studied.

The sterile insect technique (SIT) reduces population numbers by releasing sterile males that produce non-viable progeny. Specifically, CRISPR/Cas9-based precision-guided SIT (pgSIT) generates sterile males through genetic crosses of two transgenic lines: a Cas9 strain and a guide RNA (gRNA) strain targeting male sterility and female viability or infertility. However, pgSIT requires separate maintenance of the two lines and sorting to obtain sterile males, creating possible challenges for scaling. To overcome this, we propose using Cas12a nuclease, which is inoperative at lower temperatures but active at higher temperatures. Purpose: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is an aggressive malignancy with a poor prognosis despite initial treatment responses. This study evaluates ctDNA for monitoring disease and assessing the efficacy of first-line therapy in patients with extensive-stage SCLC (1L ES-SCLC).

Experimental design: In the TAZMAN trial, 31 patients with 1L ES-SCLC received standard treatment with durvalumab and etoposide plus carboplatin or cisplatin. We analyzed 228 plasma samples from 27 of 31 patients using a liquid biopsy approach to detect somatic mutations and copy-number aberrations, while also accounting for clonal hematopoiesis mutations.

Importance: Red blood cell alloimmunization is typically associated with the transplacental transfer of incompatible fetal red blood cells into maternal circulation. Subsequent pregnancies can be affected by fetal anemia, hydrops fetalis, and perinatal death. Most cases of Rhesus D (RhD) alloimmunization due to pregnancy can be prevented by the proper administration of Rhesus immune globulin. However, an emerging practice of using low-titer, O, RhD-positive whole blood (LTOWB) in cases of life-threatening hemorrhage has the potential to increase the exposure of the female population to a new source of incompatible red blood cells.

IMPORTANCE: Different degrees of growth delay have been reported in children with Alagille syndrome (ALGS), yet these patients are routinely evaluated using standard growth charts.

OBJECTIVE: To develop condition-specific growth charts for ALGS using modern statistical approaches.

Purpose: Because surgery is the only potential cure for pancreatic cancer, high-risk premalignant pancreatic lesions often evade detection by palpation or white-light visualization, increasing the risk of recurrence. We asked whether near-infrared fluorescence imaging of tumor-associated inflammation could identify high-risk premalignant lesions, leveraging the tumor microenvironment as a sentinel of local disease and, thus, enhance surgery outcomes.
