For this Doctor of Nursing Practice project in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R), the focus was on enhancing education for acute care nurses about the benefits of inpatient rehabilitation for appropriate patients. The practice problem was the underutilization of inpatient rehabilitation despite its proven benefits in improving patient outcomes and reducing readmissions. With this project, I aimed to educate nurses on identifying suitable candidates for inpatient rehabilitation, thereby improving patient care transitions and outcomes. Purpose of Review: Repetitive head impacts (RHI)—repeated head trauma that may or may not result in clinically identified injury—are a growing public health concern due to links with neurodegenerative disease and long-term dysfunction. This review aimed to synthesize current knowledge of RHI and evaluate methodological challenges that limit conclusions about its clinical consequences. Recent Findings: Emerging studies highlight associations between RHI and cognitive, emotional, and functional outcomes across vulnerable populations including athletes, military personnel, and survivors of intimate partner violence. Investigating The Impact Of Health Information Exchange On Hospital Performance: Evidence From The United States, C. Christopher Lee, Ruoqing Zhang

International Journal of Applied Management and Technology

This study examines the impact of health information exchange (HIE) participation on hospital performance in the United States, focusing on profitability, efficiency, and quality. Analyzing data from 3,294 hospitals over 3 years (2014–2016) and using multiple regression models, the results showed a positive association between HIE participation and improved performance. HIE membership is linked to increased profitability, enhanced efficiency, and certain quality enhancements, particularly in larger, metropolitan, for-profit hospitals. However, the relationship with quality outcomes is less conclusive. Introduction: Calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD) is the most common heart valve disorder. While hypertension is a major risk factor, the mechanisms by which elevated blood pressure contributes to calcification are largely unknown. Given the established sensitivity of aortic valve (AV) tissue to mechanical cues, hypertension may subject AV leaflets to a stress state conducive to CAVD. To address this hypothesis, the objective of this study was to compare AV function and mechanics under normotensive (NTN, 120/ 80 mmHg), pre-hypertensive (preHTN, 125/80 mmHg) and hypertensive (HTN, 130/90 mmHg) conditions using fluid-structure interaction modeling.

This study explored the effectiveness of technology on the enhancement of independent living skills for individuals with intellectual developmental disabilities (IDD) in two MOKA smart homes. Using a quantitative research approach, the study examined how assistive technology can aid individuals with IDD to increase independence in their living skills. This research was conducted in two pilot residential homes, a men's home and a women's home. Three women and two men participated in the study. We report a 62-year-old male who had a Heartware left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation and subsequently developed a persistent driveline infection, culminating in an abscess along the driveline site despite 18 months of antibiotic treatment. His situation was further complicated post-transplant by the onset of mediastinitis, linked to a previously undervalued Stenotrophomonas maltophilia infection. This report highlights the potential risks of heart transplantation in patients with unresolved LVAD driveline infections, particularly mediastinitis. The presence of existing driveline infections, combined with the immunosuppressed status of patients, necessitates aggressive surgical measures. Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is the most common protozoal skin infection worldwide. Multiple treatments for CL have been developed to address issues related to resistance, availability, and safety. Topical treatments have shown promise by reducing unnecessary systemic exposure and providing a viable local therapeutic option. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted of all literature published before 28 February 2025 through PubMed/MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, and EBSCO, comparing topical paromomycin–gentamicin (PG) with topical paromomycin alone (PR). Bifidobacterium has captured major attention recently because of its health benefits and extensive research highlighting its potential in cancer treatment and prevention. Evidence suggests that bifidobacterium can actively fight against various types of cancer, including those of the colon, lungs, breast, and stomach. Research indicates that several species of bifidobacterium can potentiate the action of chemotherapy, immunotherapy and radiation therapy in battling tumors, and reducing their adverse effects. Bifidobacteria shows its multipronged effect by modulating various immunomodulatory and inflammatory signaling pathways, potentially leading to the suppression of tumor growth. Internal data reveals 68% of primary care nurses report high emotional exhaustion scores on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), significantly exceeding the national average of 45%. Annual voluntary turnover of 28% results in direct replacement costs exceeding $750,000, with associated increases in absenteeism (15% higher) and overtime costs (22% higher) compared to regional benchmarks. This Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project addressed a critical gap in care at a 24-bed, combined, intensive care unit (ICU): The absence of a standardized, evidence-based clinical practice guideline (CPG) for managing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is a life-threatening emergency requiring timely, coordinated, and evidence-driven management. Despite its prevalence, the project site ICU lacked formal guidelines, resulting in fragmented care delivery and inconsistent treatment practices. Myocarditis in a pediatric patient can present with a variety of signs and symptoms, leading to a broad differential diagnosis. Delays in the correct identification of myocarditis and the initiation of appropriate interventions can have a detrimental impact on patient outcomes. In this case, a simulated five-year-old patient with myocarditis and secondary cardiogenic shock presents to the emergency department (ED).
