Nigeria seeks to address the growing burden of hypertension and related diseases by reducing excessive dietary sodium through national dietary policymaking. This study aims to describe the levels and sources of dietary sodium intake among Nigerian adults to inform these policies. From June 2023 to July 2023, adults aged 18 to 69 years old were recruited from the Federal Capital Territory, Kano, and Ogun states to participate in a population-based, cross-sectional demographic health survey. Alaska has the highest incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in the United States, with 8% mortality while undergoing TB treatment. With a quarter of TB cases lacking sputum culture to enable drug resistance testing, FreezeTB aimed to develop tools tailored to meet the challenges in Alaska while being translatable to other settings. We designed a rapid and cost-effective laboratory workflow and software to identify drug-resistant mutations in Mycobacterium tuberculosis using targeted next-generation sequencing (tNGS). Research participants should be informed of genetic test results that could impact their health, particularly when they have expressed interest in receiving such information. Furthermore, the return of genetic test results is essential to improve trust, transparency, and health equity. However, investigators often encounter barriers in returning genetic test results to research participants. We examined genomic research at a large, research-intensive medical school and found less than 6% of protocols included plans to return results to participants. Polypyrimidine tract-binding protein 1 (PTBP1) is a heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein primarily known for its alternative splicing activity. It shuttles between the nucleus and cytoplasm via partially overlapping N-terminal nuclear localization (NLS) and export (NES) signals. Despite its fundamental role in cell growth and differentiation, its involvement in human disease remains poorly understood. We identified 27 individuals from 25 families harboring de novo or inherited pathogenic variants - predominantly start-loss (89%) and, to a lesser extent, missense (11%) - affecting NES/NLS motifs. Periodontitis and type 2 diabetes mellitus are associated with each other in a bidirectional relationship. The mechanism by which diabetes affects periodontitis is understood to be due to the inflammatory effects of hyperglycemia (high blood glucose levels) and a hospitable environment for sugar-consuming bacteria. Periodontitis is known to be associated with higher levels of glycated hemoglobin (HbA_1c), a long-term measurement of blood glucose control, and treatment of periodontitis reduces HbA_1c. The oculocardiac reflex is a vagal response to pressure on the globe or periorbital structures resulting in a reduction in heart rate greater than 20 %. Here, we describe the case of a patient who sustained extensive craniofacial and orbital trauma from a firearm injury whose otherwise unexplained bradycardia resolved following surgical decompression.

OBJECTIVE: Marriage is associated with improved health and alcohol outcomes, yet prior research has often combined diverse non-marital relationships, obscuring whether benefits are unique to marriage or a result of strong interpersonal relationships. This study examines whether marriage, compared to cohabitation, exclusive dating, or being single, is associated with alcohol use disorder (AUD) remission and whether this varies by sex and partner drinking.

BACKGROUND: Cervical cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women in Africa, but stigma often delays cervical cancer prevention. We explore the perceptions, enablers and nurturers through the lens of intersectional stigma in the uptake of cervical cancer prevention services in Nigeria.

This dissertation employed a sequential exploratory mixed-methods design to examine the extent to which Generation Z students in radiography programs within a southern state perceive that their needs and expectations are being fulfilled. Additionally, the study examined how program leaders perceived and plan to utilize the survey and its findings within the cycle of continuous program improvement and accreditation readiness. A Likert-scale survey instrument was constructed by cross-referencing Generation Z’s characteristics, needs, and expectations with JRCERT standards. Exposure to campus suicide poses a significant threat to adolescent mental health. While childhood psychological abuse (CPA) is a known vulnerability factor for depression, the mechanisms linking this early adversity to depressive symptoms (DS) following acute trauma remain unclear. This study aimed to test a chain mediation model where CPA contributes to DS through the sequential effects of psychological trauma (PT) and anxiety symptoms (AS). In a cross-sectional study of 1603 adolescents exposed to a campus suicide event, participants completed self-report measures for CPA, PT, AS, and DS. Chain mediation analysis revealed a significant direct effect of CPA on DS. …

Firefighters are routinely exposed to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) during fire suppression activities, molecular biomarkers reflecting such exposure remain underexplored. Thus, we explored an integrated exposure assessment framework linking PAH contamination on turnout gear and skin to changes in microRNA (miRNA) expression in skin and blood biospecimens. Our goals are to evaluate the relationship between fire-related PAH exposure and miRNA expression profiles in firefighters, and to identify candidate miRNA biomarkers of occupational exposure. Here, we present MultiSite Assembly of Gateway Induced Clones (MAGIC), which leverages Gateway-based recombinatorial cloning technology for rapid, modular assembly of plasmids to facilitate transgenesis in cells and vertebrate animal models. The MAGIC collection of plasmids spans a range of in vitro and in vivo uses, from tools for optically and chemically tunable gene expression, to simultaneous expression of microRNAs and fluorescent reporters, to a suite of distinct subcellular compartmental fluorescent reporters, to Cre and Dre recombinase-dependent gene expression. Experience with the Aurora extravascular (EV) implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) (Medtronic, Minneapolis, MN, USA) remains limited among pediatric centers in contrast to its broader implantation in adults. We evaluated our single-center experience with the EV ICD as part of our standard ICD options for treatment of malignant ventricular arrhythmias in pediatric subjects. Following approval for EV ICD implantation at our center, five consecutive adolescent patients underwent implantation over a 7-month period. Patient characteristics, qualification for EV ICD placement, nuances in EV ICD implantation in each patient, and post-implant follow-up were reviewed. High-grade astrocytoma with piloid features (HGAP) is a recently described IDH-wildtype tumor with limited literature describing its imaging features. We present our institution's experience and the largest imaging-focused cohort of HGAP reported to date, offering a comprehensive analysis of MRI features of seventeen intracranial and one spinal HGAP, while introducing novel imaging features that have not been previously described. These include focal areas of diffusion restriction, surrounding spiculated, finger-like enhancement and increased perfusion metrics. Additionally, we highlight imaging features of HGAP arising in patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 1, such as intraventricular tumor spread, unusual temporal lobe location and multifocal presentation.

Spasticity, a complex consequence of upper motor neuron lesions, poses challenges for clinical assessment due to its neural and mechanical origins. Traditional scales like the Modified Ashworth and Tardieu Scales provide subjective, context-limited insights, often missing spasticity's dynamic nature. Neuromusculoskeletal (NMS) modeling offers objective, quantitative insights by integrating patient-specific muscle-tendon properties, reflex dynamics, and multi-joint biomechanics. This scoping review examines advancements in spasticity modeling, comparing mechanical, neurological, and integrated approaches, and their applications in conditions like cerebral palsy and stroke. Background/objectives: Treatment of childhood ependymoma evolved from 1970 to 1999 by reducing radiation volumes and incorporating chemotherapy. The impact of these changes on long-term health outcomes remains unknown. Pexidartinib (PEX, TURALIO®), a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, is approved for treating tenosynovial giant cell tumor in adults. However, its potential to cause fatal liver injury has prompted the U.S. FDA to issue a black box warning, and the mechanisms underlying its hepatotoxicity remain largely unknown. As biotransformation may contribute to PEX-induced hepatotoxicity, understanding its metabolism is essential. Our previous research indicated that PEX forms reactive metabolites in human and mouse liver microsomes and in human hepatocytes. Background: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) and intravenous (IV) ketamine are treatments used for severe depression and/or treatment-resistant depression (TRD). ECT is considered one of the most effective treatments for severe depression, although there is debate within the field regarding the effectiveness between ECT and IV ketamine in comparable TRD patient groups.

Methods: This retrospective chart review of open-label, nonrandomized treatment from a psychiatric hospital compared the effects of up to three weeks of ECT and IV ketamine in patients with major depressive episodes (MDEs). The increasing scale and complexity of neuroimaging datasets aggregated from multiple study sites present substantial analytic challenges, as existing statistical analysis tools struggle to handle missing voxel-data, suffer from limited computational speed and inefficient memory allocation, and are restricted in the types of statistical designs they are able to model. We introduce Image-Based Meta- & Mega-Analysis (IBMMA), a novel software package implemented in R and Python that provides a unified framework for analyzing diverse neuroimaging features, efficiently handles large-scale datasets through parallel processing, offers flexible statistical modeling options, and properly manages missing voxel-data commonly encountered in multi-site studies.
