Toward The Development Of A Quick, Reliable Assessment Tool For Reflective Journals, April Garrity, Casey Keck, Janet L. Bradshaw, Keiko Ishikawa
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Reflective practice, including reflective writing, can facilitate enriched learning, especially when implemented as part of a service-learning (SL) experience. Reflection is a central component of service-learning (SL) experiences. Students’ reflective abilities are often measured through reflective journaling; however, assessment of students’ reflective journals is not always efficient and straightforward. The goal of the present study was to establish a simple, reliable, and relatively quick tool for use by busy college instructors seeking to encourage students’ deep learning through reflective writing. A total of 258 reflective journals from 43 graduate students in speech-language pathology were evaluated by three raters using a …

The Gendered Experiences Of Male Students In A Speech-Language Pathology Graduate Program: A Multi-Case Study, Jairus-Joaquin R. Matthews, Derek E. Daniels
Teaching and Learning in Communication Sciences & Disorders
Speech-language pathology is a profession with a gender disparity wherein the majority of speech-language pathologists are female. This disparity is also reflected in speech-language pathology graduate programs. The American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association has developed many initiatives over the years to address this issue, yet the gender disparity still remains. The purpose of this study was to develop some initial insights into reasons that men enter into the profession of speech-language pathology, and their experiences in graduate programs. In this qualitative case-study approach, interviews were conducted with four male graduate students. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed for major …

Innovative strategies have become necessary in the treatment of patients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and their partners due to increasing rates of infection, transmission, and reinfection. Expedited Partner Therapy (EPT) is an evidence-based approach for providers to improve partner treatment and decrease reinfection rates in patients with certain STIs. However, state-based legislation governs practice implementation and EPT remains prohibited in Kentucky (KY) despite Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) endorsement. Delay in policy change presents increased risk for reinfection and continued transmission in KY. John Kingdon’s Multiple Streams framework (2003) was used to analyze EPT policy in …

The Role Of Physician Assistants And Nurse Practitioners In Increasing Access To Buprenorphine, Yeon Sun Kim
The Role Of Physician Assistants And Nurse Practitioners In Increasing Access To Buprenorphine, Yeon Sun Kim
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Opioid use disorder results in increasing mortality every year and is a growing concern in the United States. Buprenorphine is a safe and effective evidence-based medication to treat opioid use disorder. However, despite this evidence, there are a disproportionately low number of providers with the requisite Drug Enforcement Agency registration to prescribe buprenorphine, resulting in a significant barrier to access. In 2016, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act extended buprenorphine prescription privileges to physician assistants and nurse practitioners; however, these efforts have been restricted by state regulations. We hypothesize that access to buprenorphine is improved in areas where PA/NPs have …

Checkpoint And Cyclooxygenase Inhibition In Microsatellite Stable Metastatic Colorectal Cancer, Angela Preda
Yale School of Medicine Physician Associate Program Theses
Traditionally, metastatic colorectal cancer has been treated using cytotoxic chemotherapy but the development of immunotherapeutic agents has afforded higher durable remission rates and more tolerable side effect profiles in a small subset of patients. Immunotherapy treatments are currently approved for the treatment of microsatellite instability high subgroup that comprises four percent of metastatic colorectal cancer. However, immunotherapy treatments have little clinical activity in the microsatellite stable subgroup, which encompasses the majority of colorectal cancers. In this phase II trial, we propose to study the efficacy and safety of a three-drug regimen comprised of two immunotherapy treatments, programmed death 1 and …
