Reflux, Apnea And The Impact On Discharge, Michele Savin, Dnp, Nnp-Bc, Kaitlin Kenaley, Md, Maureen Moffet, Msn, Rula Nassar, Md

College of Nursing Posters

Decisions made about timing of discharge can be subjective. Definitions of significant bradycardia are multiple, and interventions are variable.

This necessitates an informed discussion with parents about the natural course of apnea, bradycardia and reflux.

The physiology of gastroesophageal reflux and respiratory control have intermingled confounding variables.

Critical thinking is required to educate and support families, however a paucity of research exists. Risks and benefits of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic interventions should be evaluated.

Nurses need increased confidence in understanding how to approach the preterm infant with apnea and/or reflux as well as how to interact with families to support discharge …

Effectiveness Of Snap And A24-Automated Traps And Broadcast Anticoagulant Bait In Suppressing Commensal Rodents In Hawaii, Aaron B. Shiels, Tyler Bogardus, Jobriath Rohrer, Kapua Kawelo

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Commensal rodents (invasive rats, Rattus spp.; house mice, Mus musculus) are well established globally. They threaten human health by disease transfer and impact economies by causing agricultural damage. On island landscapes, they are frequent predators of native species and affect biodiversity. To provide managers with better information regarding methods to suppress commensal rodent populations in remote island forests, in 2016 we evaluated the effectiveness of continuous rat trapping using snap-traps, Goodnature® A24 self-resetting rat traps, and a 1-time (2-application) hand-broadcast of anticoagulant rodenticide bait pellets (Diphacinone-50) applied at 13.8 kg/ha per application in a 5-ha forest on Oahu, Hawaii, USA. …

Effect Of Verbal Directions On Grip Strength Evaluated Using The Handheld Dynamometer, Laura Walsh, Otd, Otr/L, Cht, Marie-Christine Potvin, Phd, Otr/L

Department of Occupational Therapy Faculty Papers

Background: Grip strength measurement using the handheld dynamometer is a key aspect of the evaluation of an upper extremity injury. The handheld dynamometer manufacturer has established research-based guidelines outlining body positioning during grip strength measurement. However, verbal direction guidelines, while provided, have not yet been shown to be most effective through research. This study seeks to determine whether the use of one of two types of verbal directions, with and without encouragements, resulted in greater grip strength as measured by the handheld dynamometer.

Method: The grip strength of healthy females (n = 60) was compared using two sets of prerecorded …

Multiple Sclerosis Outcomes After Cancer Immunotherapy, Catherine R. Garcia, Rani Jayswal, Val R. Adams, Lowell B. Anthony, John L. Villano

Markey Cancer Center Faculty Publications

INTRODUCTION: Neurological immune-related adverse events are a rare but potentially deadly complication after immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) treatment. As multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune-mediated disease, it is unknown how ICI treatment may affect outcomes.

METHODS: We analyzed the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) database for pembrolizumab, atezolizumab, nivolumab, ipilimumab, avelumab, and durvalumab 2 years prior their FDA approval until December 31, 2017, to include all cases with confirmed diagnosis/relapse of MS. We also included cases reported in the literature and a patient from our institution.

RESULTS: We identified 14 cases of MS …

Exploring Factors And Consequences Of Nurse Fatigue In Nurses Who Work On-Call Shifts, Erin Mitchell

Master of Science in Nursing Final Projects

ABSTRACT

Purpose: On-call shifts are used for unpredictable hours in addition to regular shifts at many hospitals. The purpose of this study is to explore the factors related to nurse fatigue in nurses who work on-call shifts, as well as identifying the consequences of call-shift related fatigue on these nurses.

Design: A descriptive qualitative design will be used.

Methods: A qualitative self-report technique will be used in this study known as semi-structured interviews. These interviews will be of a small sample size to allow time and opportunity for intimate and extensive interactions with the study participants.

Data Analysis: A selective …

Reverse Zoonosis Of Pandemic A(H1n1)Pdm09 Influenza Viruses At The Swine/Human Interface, Daniel Gene Darnell Oct 2019

Reverse Zoonosis Of Pandemic A(H1n1)Pdm09 Influenza Viruses At The Swine/Human Interface, Daniel Gene Darnell

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The 2009 pandemic influenza A(H1N1)pdm09 virus emerged from the swine population. Despite frequent zoonotic events, swine influenza viruses had not become established in humans previously and little is known about host-barriers which prevent swine influenza viruses from efficiently infecting humans. Thus, the emergence of the H1N1pdm09 viruses in humans and the subsequent reverse zoonoses back to swine offered an extremely valuable opportunity to expand current knowledge. We used our active swine farm surveillance platform in combination with viruses from the USDA surveillance program to look for evidence of interspecies transmission of H1N1pdm09 viruses in the US. We found phylogenetic evidence …

Dietary Advanced Glycation End-Products (Ages) And Breast Cancer Risk And Survival, Omonefe Opeyemi Omofuma Oct 2019

Dietary Advanced Glycation End-Products (Ages) And Breast Cancer Risk And Survival, Omonefe Opeyemi Omofuma

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: Advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) are implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic diseases including cancer. AGEs are produced endogenously and are also consumed from foods. High amounts of AGEs are found in animal products and processed foods, and AGE formation is accelerated during cooking at high temperatures. Using data from the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial (PLCO), we assigned and quantified NƐ-carboxymethyl-lysine (CML)-AGE content in food and investigated the association between dietary AGE intake and breast cancer (BrCa) risk. We assessed whether the risk was modified by race/ethnicity, obesity status, fruit and vegetable intake, BrCa invasiveness …

Longitudinal Trajectories Of Depressive Symptoms Among Youth And Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes: Predictors And Health Outcomes, Melanie Whitmire Sutherland Oct 2019

Longitudinal Trajectories Of Depressive Symptoms Among Youth And Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes: Predictors And Health Outcomes, Melanie Whitmire Sutherland

Theses and Dissertations

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is one of the most frequently diagnosed chronic illnesses among youth, and has many long-term complications, including retinopathy, neuropathy, and cardiovascular disease. The risk of these complications may be reduced through maintaining glycemic control and one potential risk factor for failure to achieve optimal glycemic control is elevated depressive symptoms among youth and young adults (YYA) with T1D. YYA with T1D are at increased risk of depression, which has been associated with adverse outcomes such as poor adherence to self-management and poor glycemic control. Although a robust body of research exists on the association between comorbid …

Improving End Stage Renal Disease Quality Incentive Payment Total Performance Scores, Shelly Guyer, Gina Gregg, Bradley Warady

Posters

The End Stage Rena Disease (ESRD) Quality Incentive Program (QIP) promotes high quality, transparent, cost-efficient care in outpatient dialysis facilities by establishing performance standards that are linked to payment.

The development of a subject matter expert and the sharing of ESRD QIP knowledge resulted in buy-in from dialysis staff and physicians leading to a higher total performance score and the avoidance of payment reduction.
