The Essential Role Of Carbon Metabolism In The Virulence Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Mara Weigner
The Essential Role Of Carbon Metabolism In The Virulence Of Cryptococcus Neoformans, Mara Weigner
Senior Honors Theses
Cryptococcus neoformans infections are a major cause of meningoencephalitis in immunosuppressed patients worldwide. Inhaled as spores or desiccated yeast cells, C. neoformans can undergo metabolic changes in response to the new host environment that allow it to cross the blood brain barrier and cause deadly central nervous system (CNS) infections. Nutrient acquisition, and specifically carbon metabolism, is critical for survival and proliferation within the host. Notably, efficient carbon metabolism is necessary to produce the polysaccharide capsule, which is arguably C. neoformans’ most important and well-studied virulence factor. As such, a better understanding of carbon acquisition and regulation is essential for …

The adaptation of birds to urban environments has created direct hazards to air transportation with the potential for catastrophic incidents. Bird–aircraft collisions involving Canada geese (Branta canadensis; goose) pose greater risks to aircraft than many bird species due to their size and flocking behavior. However, information on factors driving movements of geese near airports and within aircraft arrival/departure areas for application to management are limited. To address this need, we deployed 31 neck collar-mounted global positioning system transmitters on Canada geese near Midway International Airport in Chicago, Illinois, USA during November 2015 to February 2016. We used the movement data …

Background: We aimed to determine the prevalence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and its cross-country variation among hypertensive individuals in rural Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. We also explored the factors associated with CKD in these populations.
Method: We studied baseline data from the Control of Blood Pressure and Risk Attenuation-Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka (COBRA-BPS) trial, an ongoing cluster randomized controlled trial on 2643 hypertensive adults ≥40 years of age from 30 randomly selected rural clusters, 10 in each of the three countries. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) /min/1.73 m2 or a urine albumin:creatinine …

Although labore unions can help their members in solving problems related to industrial relations, it still takes a long time due to the lack of it’s ability to negotiate with companies. This can be seen in the process of resolving layoffs and work status at PT X which took 4 years, from 2013 to 2016 to reach an agreement. This research aims to describe the obstacles faced by labor unions in conducting negotiations and the efforts they have made to improve their capabilities. This research is a qualitative descriptive study and using purposive sampling techniques to selected the informant and …

This undergraduate thesis discusses about the correlation of work-life balance to job satisfaction among Yayasan Plan International Indonesia’s Employees. This research is a quantitative research with descriptive design. This research is background by the importance of employee’s satisfaction in the Human Service Organization’s setting. Meanwhile, the research about employee’s job satisfaction among Human Service Organization is still rare. The result of this research shows that there’s a very weak correlation between the level work-life balance to the level of job satisfaction among Yayasan Plan International Indonesia’s Employees. This can be caused by the difference in characteristic between HSO and company. …

Penyandang Disabilitas Di Indonesia:Perkembangan Istilah Dan Definisi, Dini Widinarsih
Jurnal Ilmu Kesejahteraan Sosial

Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Background: Currently, the number of the elderly has been rising sharply worldwide. Seemingly, age-inducedcerebral endothelial dysfunction may lead to vascular abnormality that can later progress to cerebrovascularand neurodegenerative diseases. Moreover, several evidences have shown that age-related oxidative stress anddecline in cellular function appeared in the vascular system both in humans and laboratory animals. The role ofexercise training in the regulation of age-related oxidative stress and endothelial functions have been reported. Objectives: To investigate whether exercise training can prevent age-induced cerebral endothelial dysfunctionassociated to PI3K/Akt signaling. Methods: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into 3 groups: sedentary-young group (SE-Young, 4 months),sedentary-aged group (SE-Aged, …

The Role Of Spirituality And 12 Step Groups In Addressing Treatment Fear And Worry Among Head And Neck Cancer Patients, Heather M. Wallace
Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles
Diagnosis of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) presents a multifarious problem. Because of uncertainty regarding appropriate clinical treatment, as well as the high potential for disfigurement and functional loss resulting in diminished quality of life (QOL), satisfactory patient participation in quality decision-making is critical. Previous research has consistently revealed that older adults frequently defer decisionmaking to their physician and make decisions more quickly than younger adults. Research also suggests that lay health beliefs, past experiences and various strategies of emotional regulation, based on perceptions of the quantity and quality of remaining time till death, may influence the decisionmaking …

Abstract Addiction to drugs and alcohol is a widespread, and ever-growing problem in American society today. Individuals who undergo treatment for their addiction often find it difficult to gain employment due to employers' negative perceptions of addiction. Previous research has found that many employers have a stigma of those in addiction recovery. However, little research has been done to determine if these stigmas affect hiring decisions. Drug and alcohol misuse are prominent in the Appalachian area, which presents an issue for employers in the area who maintain a drug-free work place or who have a stigma of those in addiction …

Envh 8335 A – Global Water And Sanitation, Asli Aslan
College of Public Health: Faculty Syllabi (2014-2021)
The global water crisis is the most serious threat to human health. Poor water quality, lack of sanitation and inadequate access to clean water resources are one of the major causes of global health disparities. Current issues such as changing climate, decaying infrastructure and reemerging waterborne diseases are also contributors for disease transmission within vulnerable populations. This course analyzes the key drivers that affect global water quality and human health. Real world case scenarios will be examined to develop sustainable and appropriate solutions that consider environmental, individual, cultural, and economic factors.
