Association Between Pm2.5 Concentrations And Hospitalization Cases For Schizophrenia And Mood Disorders In Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam From 2019 To 2020, Do Thi Hoai Thuong

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

The evidence for adverse effects of ambient particulate matter pollution on mental and behavioral disorders (MBDs) is limited. Until now, few epidemiological studies have focused on this field, especially in developing countries. With the changes in concentrations and sources of air pollution over the past decade in Vietnam lead to high levels of air pollutants, especially particulate matters including PM2.5. Therefore, it is worthwhile to investigate the acute effects of outdoor air pollution on MBDs. However, no Vietnamese study has looked into the short-term effect of PM2.5 on hospitalization for MBDs. To examine the association between PM2.5 and the cases …

Mentoring In Nurse Anesthesia: Positively Influencing Job Satisfaction, Patricia J. Tharp

Doctor of Nursing Practice Projects

Mentored nurse anesthetists reported greater job satisfaction in a pilot study (N=19), preceding this study. The purpose of this study was to examine mentoring in nurse anesthesia as it relates to job satisfaction, based on Patricia Benner’s theory “Novice to Expert.” The study was a non-experimental and measured job satisfaction. Twelve nurse anesthetists employed at a gastroenterology center were given paper surveys, after signing an informed consent. Surveys used in this study included a demographic questionnaire, a survey on mentoring, and the Misener Nurse Practitioner Job Satisfaction Scale (MNPJSS). The surveys were returned in a sealed envelope. Subjects were asked …

Shifting The Gaze Of The Physician From The Body To The Body In A Place: A Qualitative Analysis Of A Community-Based Photovoice Approach To Teaching Place-Health Concepts To Medical Students, Lauri Andress, Matthew P. Purtill

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Medical practitioners, trained to isolate health within and upon the body of the individual, are now challenged to negotiate research and population health theories that link health status to geographic location as evidence suggests a connection between place and health. This paper builds an integrated place-health model and structural competency analytical framework with nine domains and four levels of proficiency that is utilized to assess a community-based photovoice project’s ability to shift the practice of medicine by medical students from the surface of the body to the body within a place. Analysis of the medical student’s photovoice data demonstrated that …

Referral Patterns To Continence Physiotherapy Services For Patients With Chronic Respiratory Conditions, Hannah Brien, Cath Bunting, Shane Patman

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Chronic respiratory conditions are a widely recognised risk factor for urinary incontinence and current chronic respiratory condition management guidelines state that patients should be screened for urinary incontinence and referred to continence physiotherapists for treatment. This study aimed to firstly confirm anecdotal sentiment that referrals of these patients to continence physiotherapists are low; and, secondly, to investigate barriers to the referral of these patients. Two online de novo surveys were disseminated across the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia: one to continence physiotherapists (Survey A) to investigate referral rates, and the other to respiratory physiotherapists, respiratory physicians and general practitioner …

Physiotherapy Papers and Journal Articles

Objective: Systematic reviews of analgesics for low back pain generally include published data only. Obtaining data from unpublished trials is potentially important because they may impact effect sizes in meta-analyses. We determined whether including unpublished data from trial registries changes the effect sizes in meta-analyses of analgesics for low back pain.

Study Design and Setting: Trial registries were searched for unpublished data that conformed to the inclusion criteria of n = 5 individual source systematic reviews. We reproduced the meta-analyses using data available from the original reviews and then reran the same analyses with the addition of new unpublished data. …

Peer-Reporting Of Academic Dishonesty In Classroom And Online Examinations: Prevalence, Experiences, Perceptions, And Beliefs Of Pharmacy Students, Myo-Kyoung Kim

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate pharmacy students’ experiences, perceptions, and beliefs regarding peer-reporting of academic dishonesty by adopting a cross-sectional anonymous survey to pharmacy students in the United States. In addition, this study identified factors that may affect pharmacy students’ likelihood of reporting peers’ academic dishonesty including the relationship between the cheater and their observer, the severity of the punishment on the reported cheating, and the reporting systems. Fifty-six out of 271 respondents (20.7%) reported their engagement of academic dishonesty. One hundred forty-four respondents (53.1%) reported that they directly observed someone else’s cheating behavior. One hundred eighty-nine …

Clinical Practice in Athletic Training

Myofascial compression interventions have become popular in rehabilitation and fitness. To date, no studies have directly compared foam rolling, instrument assisted soft-tissue mobilization, and floss band among unexperienced individuals. The primary purpose of this investigation was to compare the immediate post intervention effects of foam rolling, instrument assisted soft-tissue mobilization, and floss band on passive knee joint range of motion (ROM) among inexperienced individuals using a standard treatment time. The secondary purpose was to determine the interchangeability of the interventions and to provide preliminary research for long-term comparison studies. This pretest-posttest randomized controlled trial was conducted in a university laboratory. …

The Antiviral Activity Of Lichen Metabolites Against Dengue Virus, Naphat Loeanurit Jan 2020

The Antiviral Activity Of Lichen Metabolites Against Dengue Virus, Naphat Loeanurit

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Dengue fever is one of the mosquito-borne infectious diseases globally. Currently, no specific treatment was established. Depsidones and depsides are one of the most common lichen secondary metabolites produced for the organism’s survival in extreme environments. These compounds have been reported as antivirals against the other virus in Flaviviridae family, hepatitis C virus. In this study, depsidones and depsides were explored for anti-dengue efficacy and cellular toxicity. One depsidone, VK-0014, and two depsides, TT-031 and TT-032, exhibited an anti-DENV2 with effective concentration (EC50) of 17.42 ± 3.21, 2.43 ± 0.19, and 0.91 ± 0.15 µM, respectively. Cytotoxicity concentration (CC50) in …

Identification Of A New Disease Gene For A Familial Autoimmune Disease, Thivaratana Sinthuwiwat

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

Background: Autoimmune diseases, triggered by genetic and environmental factors resulted in the failure of the immune system to develop tolerance toward self-antigens, are characterized by immune responses against self-tissues. Until now the cause of autoimmune disease is not well understood. Here, we identified a three-generation family with 9 members suffering from one of the three autoimmune diseases – Grave’s disease, Hashimoto thyroiditis, or SLE. Objective: To identify a genetic variant underlying the autoimmune diseases of this large family and to determine its molecular pathomechanism. Methods: Immunophenotype including flow cytometry was characterized. Whole-genome linkage study (WGL) and whole-exome sequencing (WES) of …

Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)

There are 10-24% of the population who experience chronic foot pain. Patient-reported outcome measurement (PROM) is a standardized tool that is useful in measuring the outcomes of treatment. The Manchester-Oxford Foot Questionnaire (MOXFQ) is a foot-specific questionnaire that was developed for surgical outcomes and foot conditions assessment. There are 3 subscales of MOXFQ including walking/standing, pain, and social interaction. MOXFQ has been translated into several languages but there is no previous Thai version. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt and test for reliability and validity of the Thai version of MOXFQ (Thai-MOXFQ) in participants with chronic foot problems. The original …
