Breast Density Awareness, Alyssa Acker Jan 2020

Breast Density Awareness, Alyssa Acker

Student Research Poster Presentations 2020

Breast density refers to the amount of fibrous and glandular tissue in comparison to fatty tissue demonstrated on a mammogram. A woman’s breast density is significant because as the density of the tissue increases, the woman’s risk for developing breast cancer increases and the more challenging for microcalcifications or lesions to be seen on mammography images. The Mammography Quality Standards Act, requires radiologists or imaging facilities to send each patient a written summary of their mammogram report and communicate to the patient if their results suggest further imaging. In addition to this requirement, 38 states that have passed a Breast …

The Use Of Cyberknife Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy In Treating Hepatocellular Carcinoma, Alexis Baddick

Student Research Poster Presentations 2020

Radiation therapy is an ever-changing field, making it easier and safer to treat a broader range of cancers. With the advancement of the CyberKnife System, we can now investigate how effective stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) treatments are in terms of treating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients. HCC is the most common liver cancer as well as one of the most prominent cancer-related deaths in the world. Several studies indicated that, previously, treating HCC with ionizing radiation was not an effective option due to the liver’s sensitivity to radiation, among other factors. After conducting research and examining nine different sources, there …

The Fostering Healthy Parents Program: A Specialized Program Developed For The Foster Care Community, Kelly Cregar

OT Student Capstones

Foster children and their caregivers are underrepresented and overlooked in many aspects of their care. Lack of resources and services leave them in the dark, both financially and medically, resulting in around a 50% guardian retention rate (National Council for Adoption, 2018). Constantly being uprooted and either placed in a new home or a group home, foster children rarely achieve a feeling of belonging, leading to a plethora of health problems (Fawley-King, Trask, Zhang, & Aarons, 2017). Occupational therapists have the potential to develop programs that encourage development and progression in this demographic, as well as programs that allow for …

Neuropsychological Test Performance In Individuals With Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms: A Data-Driven Method To Conceptualize Ot Cognitive Rehabilitation Toward Return-To-Work, Naomi Melendez

OT Student Capstones

Cognitive deficits, secondary to concussion, can impact return to work; people may be held from work due to symptoms. Common difficulties include trouble learning new tasks, or needing more time to perform job tasks. In 10-20% of cases, symptoms can persist for months, and are more likely to persist one year post-injury. Studies have examined cognitive performance after concussion with mixed results, warranting further research in cognitive deficits and cognitive rehabilitation. The OT scope of practice is inclusive of rehabilitation at the physical, cognitive, and affective domains; however, concussion cognitive rehabilitation services are under-represented in literature.

The purpose of this …

Food insecurity – a lack of food required for a healthy and productive life – affects approximately 150 million households in the United States alone (Coleman-Jensen, Rabbit, Gregory, & Singh, 2018). The implications of this are numerous – as individuals who are “food insecure” have a statistically increased risk of numerous health conditions and disorders. In an effort to combat the burden of food insecurity, organizations such as the Supplemental Assistance and Nutrition Program (SNAP) have been created to provide increased access to food items. Furthermore, numerous state organizations have developed additional programs, which incentivize SNAP users to purchase nutrient …
