Dental Medicine Faculty Research

Recently, bruxism became the center of attention for the etiological research of non-carious cervical lesions (NCCLs). The present study aims to investigate the presence and types of NCCLs associated with bruxism. Retrospective keywords search of the clinical notes of all patient charts in axiUmTM was performed using the terms “bruxism”, “attrition”, “abrasion”, “erosion”, and “abfraction”. All bruxer patients 18 years and older who presented to the UNLV School of Dental Medicine (01/01/2014 to 09/30/2018) with the complete record were included. To determine the statistical analysis implications, the chi-square test was used. Commonest types of NCCL associated with bruxism were attrition …

Short Treatment With Antalarmin Alters Adrenal Gland Receptors In The Rat Model Of Endometriosis, Annelyn Torres-Reveron, Maahrose Rana, Varesh Gorabi, Leslie L. Rivera-Lopez, Caroline B. Appleyard

Health & Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications

Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disorder in which endometrial tissue is found outside the uterine cavity. Previous reports suggest that there is a dysregulation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis during the progression of endometriosis. Our previous report showed that a short-term treatment with antalarmin, a corticotrophin releasing hormone receptor type 1 (CRHR1) antagonist decreases the number and size of endometriotic vesicles in the auto-transplantation rat model of endometriosis. Our current goal was to examine the mRNA expression of intra-adrenal receptors to better understand the mechanisms of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA) axis involvement in endometriosis. We used two groups …

Women’s Health Articles

BACKGROUND: Metaplastic breast cancer remains poorly characterized given its rarity and heterogeneity. The majority of metaplastic breast cancers demonstrate a phenotype of triple-negative breast cancer; however, differences in clinical outcomes between metaplastic breast cancer and triple-negative breast cancer in the era of third-generation chemotherapy remain unclear.

METHODS: We compared the clinical outcomes between women with metaplastic breast cancer and women with triple-negative breast cancer diagnosed between 1994 and 2014. Metaplastic breast cancer patients were matched 1:3 to triple-negative breast cancer patients by stage and age at diagnosis. Distant disease-free survival (DDFS) and overall survival (OS) were estimated using Kaplan Meier …

Effects Of Deceptive Footwear Condition On Subjective Comfort And Running Biomechanics, Zoe Y.S. Chan, Ivan P.H. Au, Janet H. Zhang-Lea, Reed Ferber, Gary Shum, Winko W. An, Roy T.H. Cheung

Human Physiology Faculty Scholarship

Comfort is a major criterion for footwear selection. Previous studies have suggested that physical properties were not enough to predict comfort and psychological factors could also affect the perception. To understand comfort, this study examined the effect of controlled shoe description and price cue on the perception of comfort. Furthermore, this study also examined the running biomechanics in response to footwear conditions of differing comfort. Fifteen runners completed treadmill running tests in two conditions: Shoe A and Shoe B. The same pair of neutral running shoes was used in both conditions, yet, Shoe B was described to be the “latest …

Paul Kelly, Lori R. Holtz, Omer H. Yilmaz, Kamran Sadiq, Najeeha Talat Iqbal, Beatrice Amadi, Sana Syed

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: A major limitation to understanding the etiopathogenesis of environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is the lack of a comprehensive, reproducible histologic framework for characterizing the small bowel lesions. We hypothesized that the development of such a system will identify unique histology features for EED, and that some features might correlate with clinical severity.
Methods: Duodenal endoscopic biopsies from two cohorts where EED is prevalent (Pakistan, Zambia) and North American children with and without gluten sensitive enteropathy (GSE) were processed for routine hematoxylin & eosin (H&E) staining, and scanned to produce whole slide images (WSIs) which we shared among study pathologists …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021

BACKGROUND: The incidence and mortality rates of gastric cancer (GC) rank in top five among all malignant tumors. Chemokines and their receptor-signaling pathways reportedly play key roles in the metastasis of malignant tumor cells. Receptor activator of nuclear factor κB ligand (RANKL) is a member of the tumor necrosis factor family, with strong chemokine-like effects. Some studies have pointed out that the RANKL/RANK pathway is vital for the metastasis of cancer cells, but the specific mechanisms in GC remain poorly understood. RESULTS: This study reports original findings in cell culture models and in patients with GC. Flow cytometry and western …

Using Mobile Phones To Improve Community Health Workers Performance In Low-And-Middle-Income Countries, Anam Shahil Feroz, Rawshan Jabeen, Sarah Saleem

Community Health Sciences

Background: In low-and-middle-income countries community health workers are the core component of the PHC system as they act as a liaison between the communities and the healthcare facilities. Evidence suggests that the services offered by these workers have helped in the decline of maternal and child morbidity and mortality rates and the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases. However, the coverage and the overall progress towards achieving the SDG targets is very sluggish. The recent consensus concerning this current pace of progress, is that it relates to financial and human resources constraints. CHWs are overburdened as they are expected to …

Increased Episodes Of Aspiration On Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study In Children With Nasogastric Tube Placement., Sarah T. Edwards, Linda Ernst, Ashley K. Sherman, Ann M. Davis Jan 2020

Increased Episodes Of Aspiration On Videofluoroscopic Swallow Study In Children With Nasogastric Tube Placement., Sarah T. Edwards, Linda Ernst, Ashley K. Sherman, Ann M. Davis

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers

BACKGROUND: Given the limited evidence available, the impact of nasogastric (NG) tube placement on swallowing in children is not well understood. When a child needs to be fed enterally, the current standard is to initially place an NG tube and leave it in place for the first few months of supplemental or total enteral nutrition. It is important to understand if placement of NG tubes has a negative effect on a patient's swallow.

METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the charts of those children who had videofluoroscopic swallow studies (VFSS) to identify all children who had an NG tube in place at …

Why Do Women Deliver Where They Had Not Planned To Go? A Qualitative Study From Peri-Urban Nairobi Kenya., V. Naanyu, V. Mujumdar, C. Ahearn, M. Mcconnell, J. Cohen

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: In urban Kenya, couples face a wide variety of choices for delivery options; however, many women end up delivering in different facilities from those they had intended while pregnant. One potential consequence of this is delivering in facilities that do not meet minimum quality standards and lack the capacity to provide treatment for obstetric and neonatal complications.

METHODS: This study investigated why women in peri-urban Nairobi, Kenya deliver in facilities they had not intended to use. We used 60 in-depth audio-recorded interviews in which mothers shared their experiences 2-6 months after delivery. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize socio-demographic …

Analyses Of The 2019 Nobel Prize In Physiology Or Medicine: Molecular Machinery For Cellular Oxygen Level Response, Neyda V. Gilman

Library Scholarship

Gregg L. Semenza, William G Kaelin, Jr, and Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe were awarded the 2019 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine on October 7, 2019. Their work led to the understanding of how cells recognize and adapt to varying oxygen levels. Hypoxia-inducible nuclear factors play an essential role in this mechanism by turning on other genes that work towards increasing oxygen levels in hypoxic environments. Other vital pieces of the machinery include von Hippel-Lindau proteins and prolyl hydroxylation. Due to the necessity of oxygen in numerous human physiological systems, this discovery will likely have nearly immeasurable impacts on human …
