Cutting The Cord: A Case Of Late Presenting Driveline Infection, Brian Laughey, Lauren Eyadiel, Barbara Pisani
The VAD Journal
Ventricular assist device (VAD) related infection, specifically driveline infection, is a common complication after VAD implantation. A 45-year old patient with a delayed skin infection at the site of the original driveline nearly one year after VAD inactivation and surgical driveline burial was treated with antibiotics and surgical debridement for approximately six months. Continued discharge at driveline site and growth of methicillin susceptible Staphylococcus aureus resulted in the recommendation of explantation of the VAD. Post-VAD explantation, the patient remains symptom free and without infection 21 months following explant.

Faculty Research 2020
Life scientists are increasingly turning to high-throughput sequencing technologies in their research programs, owing to the enormous potential of these methods. In a parallel manner, the number of core facilities that provide bioinformatics support are also increasing. Notably, the generation of complex large datasets has necessitated the development of bioinformatics support core facilities that aid laboratory scientists with cost-effective and efficient data management, analysis, and interpretation. In this article, we address the challenges-related to communication, good laboratory practice, and data handling-that may be encountered in core support facilities when providing bioinformatics support, drawing on our own experiences working as support …

Fev1 And Mri Ventilation Defect Reversibility In Asthma And Copd, Hana Serajeddini, Rachel L Eddy, Christopher Licskai, David G Mccormack, Grace Parraga
Medical Biophysics Publications
The underlying pathophysiological determinants of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are related in complex ways. Importantly however, post-bronchodilator FEV1- reversibility may occur in approximately 50% of COPD patients whilst epidemiological and magnetic-resonance-imaging (MRI) studies suggest that in asthmatics, FEV1-reversibility may diminish over time. As compared to patients with asthma or COPD alone, patients with coexisting asthma and COPD report worse clinical outcomes and increased healthcare costs and burden.

Articles, Abstracts, and Reports
Anthracyclines used in the treatment of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) inhibit the activity of the mammalian topoisomerase II (topo II) isoforms, topo II α and topo IIβ. In 230 patients with non-M3 AML who received frontline ara-C/daunorubicin we determined expression of topo IIα and topo IIβ by RT-PCR and its relationship to immunophenotype (IP) and outcomes. Treatment outcomes were analyzed by logistic or Cox regression. In 211 patients, available for analysis, topo IIα expression was significantly lower than topo IIβ (P < 0.0001). In contrast to topo IIα, topo IIβ was significantly associated with blast percentage in marrow or blood (P = 0.0001), CD7 (P = 0.01), CD14 (P < 0.0001) and CD54 (P < 0.0001). Event free survival was worse for CD56-negative compared to CD56-high (HR = 1.9, 95% CI [1.0-3.5], p = 0.04), and overall survival was worse for CD-15 low as compared to CD15-high (HR = 2.2, 95% CI [1.1-4.2], p = 0.02). Ingenuity pathway analysis indicated topo IIβ and immunophenotype markers in a network associated with cell-to-cell signaling, hematological system development/function and inflammatory response. Topo IIβ expression reflects disease biology of highly proliferative disease and distinct IP but does not appear to be an independent variable influencing outcome in adult AML patients treated with anthracycline-based therapy.

Widespread social separation is rapidly becoming the norm, including closure of schools and universities, tele-commuting to work, bans on large gatherings, and millions of people isolated in their homes or make-shift facilities. Bans on international travel are already pervasive. Domestic travel restrictions are exceedingly rare, but now within the realm of possibility. Officials are even discussing cordon sanitaires (guarded areas where people may not enter or leave), popularly described as “lockdowns” or mass quarantines.

Care is important for children's growth and development, but lack or inadequacy of resources for care can constrain appropriate caregiving. The objectives of this study were to examine whether maternal resources for care are associated with care behaviours specifically infant and young child feeding, hygiene, health-seeking, and family care behaviours. The study also examined if some resources for care are more important than others. This study used baseline Alive & Thrive household surveys from Bangladesh, Vietnam, and Ethiopia. Measures of resources for care were maternal education, knowledge, height, nourishment, mental well-being, decision-making autonomy, employment, support in chores, and perceived instrumental …

Background & Review of Evidence: Annual flu vaccination has been recommended for everyone over the age of six months (National Foundation for Infectious Disease [NFID], 2016). A low flu vaccination rate among college students living in a residential community poses the risk for spreading a highly-contagious respiratory illness caused by the virus. Students have the ability to spread the disease to everyone around them in their dormitories, classrooms, shared restrooms and via social gatherings (NFID, 2016). College students who contract the flu virus experience approximately eight or more days of the illness (NFID, 2016).

Digital Pathology is the process of converting histology glass slides to digital images using sophisticated computerized technology to facilitate acquisition, evaluation, storage, and portability of histologic information. By its nature, digitization of analog histology data renders it amenable to analysis using deep learning/artificial intelligence (DL/AI) techniques. The application of DL/AI to digital pathology data holds promise, even if the scope of use cases and regulatory framework for deploying such applications in the clinical environment remains in the early stages. Recent studies using whole-slide images and DL/AI to detect histologic abnormalities in general and cancer in particular have shown encouraging results. …

Abstract
Pulmonary rehabilitation has been proven successful among those with chronic pulmonary diseases. However, there is a low rate of involvement and a lower rate of completion for these patients.
One of the major underlying factors contributing to this problem is patients’ lack of motivation. If the patients can be given information on the benefits of this program that align with what they hold as important there will be increased level of motivation and subsequently completion of pulmonary rehabilitation.
