National Death Rates From Firearms Due To Legal Intervention For Native Americans, Hanrui Huang Apr 2020

National Death Rates From Firearms Due To Legal Intervention For Native Americans, Hanrui Huang

OHSU-PSU School of Public Health Annual Conference

According to the CDC, deaths from legal intervention are defined as deaths caused by injuries inflicted by law enforcement officers. Although some studies have examined high rates of fatal legal intervention shootings among African Americans, rates for Native Americans have not been adequately examined, despite similar racial biases and stereotypes. This study aims to examine national data and examine the association of fatal legal intervention shootings and Native communities.

The available data provided on legal intervention (CDC) was studied to understand death rates for different races. The data was then analyzed to examine changes over time between 2008 and 2018. …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

For more than 30 years, lipid droplets (LDs) were considered as an inert bag of lipid for storage of energy-rich fat molecules. Following a paradigm shift almost a decade ago, LDs are presently considered an active subcellular organelle especially designed for assembling, storing and subsequently supplying lipids for generating energy and membrane synthesis (and in the case of hepatocytes for VLDL secretion). LDs also play a central role in many other cellular functions such as viral assembly and protein degradation. Here, we have explored the structural and functional changes that occur in hepatic and adipose tissue LDs following chronic ethanol …

Histidine-Triad Hydrolases Provide Resistance To Peptide-Nucleotide Antibiotics., Eldar Yagmurov, Darya Tsibulskaya, Alexey Livenskyi, Marina Serebryakova, Yury I Wolf, Sergei Borukhov, Konstantin Severinov, Svetlana Dubiley

Rowan-Virtua School of Osteopathic Medicine Departmental Research

The Escherichia coli microcin C (McC) and related compounds are potent Trojan horse peptide-nucleotide antibiotics. The peptide part facilitates transport into sensitive cells. Inside the cell, the peptide part is degraded by nonspecific peptidases releasing an aspartamide-adenylate containing a phosphoramide bond. This nonhydrolyzable compound inhibits aspartyl-tRNA synthetase. In addition to the efficient export of McC outside the producing cells, special mechanisms have evolved to avoid self-toxicity caused by the degradation of the peptide part inside the producers. Here, we report that histidine-triad (HIT) hydrolases encoded in biosynthetic clusters of some McC homologs or by standalone genes confer resistance to McC-like …

Balance Of Adults With Chronic Ankle Instability Following A 6-Week Core Stability Program, Natalie Dickol Apr 2020

Balance Of Adults With Chronic Ankle Instability Following A 6-Week Core Stability Program, Natalie Dickol

Theses and Dissertations

Ankle injuries are one of the most common injuries in the athletic population because of the anatomy of the ankle in conjunction with dynamic activity. During injury, mechanoreceptors are damaged, effecting neuromuscular control. Lack of neuromuscular control puts patients at risk for re-injury. Chronic ankle instability (CAI) has been defined as a condition associated with recurrent sprains and persistent symptoms, including feelings of "giving way," loss of function and limited movement and continuous ankle pain. Patients with CAI are commonly shown to have functional deficits in postural control, such as overcompensating on the uninvolved limb or unable to maintain proper …

Increasing Knowledge And Self-Efficacy In Nurses Orienting To Cardiovascular Surgery Using A New Periop 202 Program, David Reinhart

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Translational and Clinical Research Projects

The operating room theater can be intimidating for new nurses, thus leading to a shortage of nurses who are comfortable working in this environment. Evidence supports that 50% of perioperative nurses in 2017 were between the age of 50 and 59. Additionally, no formal didactic courses are being offered in undergraduate programs and the challenging environment related directly to the future shortage of perioperative nurses. This negatively impacts the number of trained perioperative cardiovascular nurses. The project proposed a new didactic educational Perioperative (Periop) 202 program that aimed to increase nurses’ self-efficacy to function on the cardiovascular operating room (CVOR) …

As approximately 70% of human breast tumors are estrogen receptor α (ERα)-positive, estrogen and ERα play essential roles in breast cancer development. By interrupting the ERα signaling pathway, endocrine therapy has been proven to be an effective therapeutic strategy. In this study, we identified a mechanism by which Transcription Start Site (TSS)-associated histone H3K27 acetylation signals the Super Elongation Complex (SEC) to regulate transcriptional elongation of the ESR1 (ERα) gene. SEC interacts with H3K27ac on ESR1 TSS through its scaffold protein AFF4. Depletion of AFF4 by siRNA or CRISPR/Cas9 dramatically reduces expression of ESR1 and its target genes, consequently inhibiting …

Identifying the causal gene(s) that connects genetic variation to a phenotype is a challenging problem in genome-wide association studies (GWASs). Here, we develop a systematic approach that integrates mouse liver co-expression networks with human lipid GWAS data to identify regulators of cholesterol and lipid metabolism. Through our approach, we identified 48 genes showing replication in mice and associated with plasma lipid traits in humans and six genes on the X chromosome. Among these 54 genes, 25 have no previously identified role in lipid metabolism. Based on functional studies and integration with additional human lipid GWAS datasets, we pinpoint Sestrin1 as …

Democratic Governors Are Quicker In Responding To The Coronavirus Than Republicans, Luke Fowler, Jaclyn Kettler, Stephanie Witt

Public Policy and Administration Faculty Publications and Presentations

While the coronavirus pandemic is a national and international concern, state and local officials find themselves on the front lines of the public health battle.

Governors, in particular, have been in the spotlight in recent weeks. New York’s Andrew Cuomo has been praised by news outlets for his leadership at the epicenter of the U.S. outbreak, while others have been criticized for slow responses.

A clear partisan gap has emerged in how quickly governors have declared emergencies and issue stay-at-home orders. Democratic governors have issued orders three to four days sooner than Republican governors, on average.
