Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
Background: SYNTAX score II (SSII) is an update of the established SYNTAX score (SS) that uses clinical variables such as age, sex, creatinine clearance, left ventricular ejection fraction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and peripheral arterial disease. Furthermore, SSII has been proven to be a more powerful predictive tool than SS in patients with complex coronary artery disease (CAD). Carotid õntima-media thickness (CIMT) is a widely used noninvasive evidence for subclinical or early atherosclerosis, and it was proved to be an independent predictor for cardiovascular events. Most of the previously published articles studied the association between the CIMT with old cardiovascular …

Coronavirus Closes In On Rohingya Refugees In Bangladesh’S Cramped, Unprepared Camps, Saleh Ahmed
University Author Recognition Bibliography: 2020
Coronavirus is spreading quickly in densely populated Bangladesh, despite a nationwide shutdown put in place a month ago.
This preventive measure has proven challenging to implement due to lack of awareness of the coronavirus and the absence of a social safety net. Extreme poverty also forces many Bangladeshis to keep working and looking for food despite the risks. Bangladesh had 2,948 confirmed COVID-19 cases as of April 20.
The disease has not yet spread into the refugee camps that house the Rohingya Muslims who fled ethnic violence in Myanmar in 2017, according to a recent update from the humanitarian organizations …

Selinexor Hyperactivates Akt And Induces Its Nuclear Accumulation, Erin Lawrence
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
Selinexor is currently being used in several clinical trials for cancer and has shown anti-cancer effects in combination with other chemotherapies. Clinical trials evaluating the use of selinexor in the treatment of triple negative breast cancer are limited, but in vitro studies show promising results in its ability to kill triple negative breast cancer cells. The mechanism by which this occurs, however, is not understood. The goal of this research was to determine the mechanism by which selinexor kills BT- 549 triple negative breast cancer cells.

Effect Of Amodiaquine On Gene Expression And Apoptosis In Colorectal Cancer Cells, Holly Pyles
Honors Scholars Collaborative Projects
This study used gene expression analysis to explore the specific response to amodiaquine in HCT116 colorectal cancer cells. Real-time PCR revealed that 20 human stress and toxicity genes were upregulated by at least 3 fold in HCT116 colorectal cancer cells treated with AMQ. Of these 20 upregulated genes, 9 were found to be pro-apoptotic and 2 were DNA damage repair genes, which supports our original hypothesis that amodiaquine is inducing a stress response in these cells. These results are consistent with previous research done by Qiao et al. (2013), as DNA damage repair genes were among the genes upregulated in …

Faculty Research 2020
Albumin has an average plasma half-life of three weeks and is thus an attractive carrier to improve the pharmacokinetics of fused therapeutics. The half-life is regulated by FcRn, a cellular receptor that protects against intracellular degradation. To tailor-design the therapeutic use of albumin, it is crucial to understand how structural alterations in albumin affect FcRn binding and transport properties. In the blood, the last C-terminal residue (L585) of albumin may be enzymatically cleaved. Here we demonstrate that removal of the L585 residue causes structural stabilization in regions of the principal FcRn binding domain and reduces receptor binding. In line with …

Impact Of Meaningful Recognition On Work Environment Perception Of Critical Care Nurses, Kristin Meinershagen
Impact Of Meaningful Recognition On Work Environment Perception Of Critical Care Nurses, Kristin Meinershagen
Dissertations
Problem: Absence of nursing staff recognition can lead to compassion fatigue, burnout, job dissatisfaction, and increased turnover rate resulting in high costs for hospitals. Meaningful recognition has been found to decrease compassion fatigue and reduce burnout. A meaningful recognition program was implemented over a 3-month period for staff nurses in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at a large midwestern, metropolitan hospital to determine its effect on nurse’s perception of work environment and turnover rate in the ICU.
Methods: This was an observational, descriptive, cohort design utilizing the AACN Healthy Work EnvironmentSurvey instrument for assessing results before and after implementation …

Recent reports indicate that 7% of pregnant mothers in North America use cannabis. This is concerning given that in utero exposure to Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Δ9-THC), the main psychoactive component in cannabis, causes fetal growth restriction and may alter replication and survival of pancreatic β-cells in the offspring. Accordingly, we hypothesized that maternal exposure to Δ9-THC during pregnancy would impair postnatal glucometabolic health of offspring. To test this hypothesis, pregnant Wistar rats were treated with daily intraperitoneal injections of either 3 mg/kg Δ9-THC or vehicle from gestational day 6 to birth. Offspring were subsequently challenged with glucose and insulin at 5 months …

Prevalence Of Syphilis Disease Throughout Some Expatriate Workers In Iraq, Israa Mamdooh Subhi, Abdul-Raheem Yahya Mahdi
Al-Esraa University College Journal for Medical Sciences
Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection caused by the spirochete Treponema pallidum. Syphilis has been a major infection in man throughout recorded history and has challenged clinicians with its many clinical manifestations. It can also spread to other people by kissing or close body contact. The disease begins with sores and then could spread to other parts of the body through its stages (primary, secondary, tertiary and latent stages) and can also reach the heart and nervous system, and it may be fatal. The data on this disease in Iraq is limited and literature is scanty. A total of 70 …

More than 230 million people undergo surgery each year worldwide, and the number is increasing annually. Surgery commonly causes postoperative pain that should be alleviated as soon and as effectively as possible to reduce suffering, promote the healing process and rehabilitation, and prevent complications. However, clinical pain management after surgery remains far from successful despite the dramatically increased scientific evidence in this area. Many patients suffer from severe pain after surgery. Aim: The aim of this study is to compare between ketorolac and nefopam when administered intravenously as post-operative analgesia in cesarean section. Patients and methods: 60 patients, who were …

Background: Type 1 diabetes (T1D) has been increasing globally over the past three decades. Self-monitoring of blood glucose is a challenge in both developed as well as developing countries. Self-management guidelines include maintaining logbooks for blood glucose, physical activity, and dietary intake that affect glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and a multitude of life-threatening acute complications. Innovative, cost-effective interventions along with beneficial lifestyle modifications can improve home-based self-monitoring of blood glucose in T1D patients. The overall objective of this study is to evaluate the relationship between maintaining log books for blood glucose levels, reinforcement by e-messages, and/or daily step count and changes …

Objective: The poorest populations of the world lack access to quality healthcare. We defined the key components of consulting via mobile technology (mConsulting), explored whether mConsulting can fill gaps in access to quality healthcare for poor and spatially marginalised populations (specifically rural and slum populations) of low- and middle-income countries, and considered the implications of its take-up.
Methods: We utilised realist methodology. First, we undertook a scoping review of mobile health literature and searched for examples of mConsulting. Second, we formed our programme theories and identified potential benefits and hazards for deployment of mConsulting for poor and spatially marginalised populations. …

India, with 13,387 cases reported as of April 17, currently accounts for just 0.6% of the COVID-19 cases worldwide. The nationwide lockdown may have helped contain the initial COVID-19 outbreak. However, until testing rates improve, the size of the outbreak remains unclear, and the risk of spread remains. It is critical to ensure ongoing adherence to current social distancing and handwashing behaviours to protect the population from a larger outbreak. An ongoing COVID-19 knowledge, attitudes and practices study implemented by the Population Council Institute in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh sought to assess the extent to which study participants felt personally …

The unintended release of chemicals to the environment has led to global concern on water quality prompting widespread research on the occurrence of these compounds in water. While increasing information on organic micropollutants (OMPs) in European water resources is available, there is still limited information on the occurrence of OMPs in African water systems. In this study, a multi-residue analysis covering 428 chemicals using liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) was performed on water samples collected from 48 surface water sites within the Lake Victoria South Basin, Kenya. A total of 75 compounds including pharmaceuticals, personal care …
