Temporal Pain Pattern Sequencing In The Older Adult After Joint Replacement Surgery, Jennifer B. Withall Apr 2020

Temporal Pain Pattern Sequencing In The Older Adult After Joint Replacement Surgery, Jennifer B. Withall

Theses & Dissertations

Background

Large joint replacement surgery, including hip and knee arthroplasties, are two of the most common surgical procedures that American adults aged 65 years and older undergo annually. While postoperative pain is expected, if it is not properly managed, it can have deleterious effects on postoperative recovery, including an increased length of stay, increased risk for postoperative complications, and decreased patient satisfaction.

Problem

Postoperative pain is primarily managed pharmacologically, typically with opioid pain medications are administered as needed (i.e., pro re nata [PRN]). Patients request pain-relieving medications when they are experiencing escalating pain, which can be challenging to maintain comfort …

All Current Publications

Death by drug poisoning is the leading cause of death due to injury in the state of Utah (UDOH, 2014). From 2013-2015, Utah ranked seventh in the nation for drug overdose deaths, the majority of which were opioid-related (CDC, 2018a). In 2017, the age-adjusted mortality rate from drug overdose in Utah was 15.5 per 100,000, putting the state above the national average of 14.9 per 100,000 (CDC, 2018b). Opioid overdose death rates in most of rural Utah far exceeds rates across the urban counties of the state. The higher rates of deaths in rural Utah is indeed concerning. Evidence indicates …

Clinical Research in Practice: The Journal of Team Hippocrates

INTRODUCTION: The ideal of evidence-based medicine includes the integration of clinical experience and patient values with research evidence. We introduce clinical decision science, a new framework that includes patient social context to demonstrate this integration, which has been absent from evidence-based medicine sources. METHODS: This is an observational study comparing published articles within the domains of clinical decision science and evidence-based medicine. In a standardized manner, investigators identified and counted instances of social interaction within the publications. RESULTS: Publications of Clinical Decision Science had a higher number of markers of social interaction per paper and greater proportion of papers that …

Fact Or Myth: The Flu Can Be Caused By The Flu Vaccine, Arleigh Wood Apr 2020

Fact Or Myth: The Flu Can Be Caused By The Flu Vaccine, Arleigh Wood

Virtual 2020 Spring Student Showcase for Research and Creative Inquiry

To many, the flu vaccine seems like a threat to an otherwise healthy individual. People often get the flu after receiving the flu shot, which does not promote confidence in the general public. These and other reasonings have created a myth that the flu vaccine can cause the flu. Understanding how the vaccination is created and how it interacts with the immune system helps to realize why the flu vaccine cannot cause the virus. For the vaccine to work, adaptive immunity must be activated by the introduction of the viral particles in a safe manner. An effective immune response from …

Traditional Chinese Medicine And Its Role In Women’S Health, Ezekiel Smith

Senior Honors Theses

This paper is a literature review of traditional Chinese medicine and its role in women’s health. A search was performed and a group of 208 articles were initially found using the Liberty Summons search engine. Out of those 208 articles, only 16 were included based on various criteria. The articles were then read and analyzed and compiled into two main themes: maternal health and an “other” category. The findings resulted in strong evidence for some herbal treatments and acupuncture in a select few areas, with inconclusive evidence for other acupuncture treatments and a mixed review of the traditional “Doing a …

Ladder Safety: A Taxonomy Of Limb-Movement Patterns For Three Points Of Control, Roger C. Jensen Apr 2020

Ladder Safety: A Taxonomy Of Limb-Movement Patterns For Three Points Of Control, Roger C. Jensen

Safety Health & Industrial Hygiene

Traditional guidance on ladder safety emphasizes training workers on the use of three points of contact. More recent guidance is to train workers to use three points of control. What is lacking is empirical information about what limb-movement patterns effectively support the use of three points of control. This project was conducted to establish a taxonomy of possible limb-movement patterns and a means for comparing relative safety. Prior to the experiment, a taxonomy of six possible limb-movement patterns was established. A sample of 20 undergraduate students performed four tasks each without any instructions on limb-movement pattern. The tasks were ascending …

Occupational Therapy In Veterans Treatment Court, Lauren T. Rodriguez, Kayla Collins, Mary Shotwell, Suny Faradj-Bakht

Spring 2020 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Veterans may face difficulty transitioning back into a civilian lifestyle. Their difficulties may be attributed to PTSD, TBI, sexual trauma, anxiety, depression, unemployment, and more. Due to these obstacles, veterans may commit crimes that place them in the Veterans Treatment Court (VTC). It was noted in October of 2018 that there were possible gaps in service for our veterans. The purpose of this project was to create an occupational therapy-based curriculum that will reduce the recidivism rate in St. Johns County VTC. The OT-based manual is intended to replace negative habits, roles, and routines with positive ones in order to …

Nursing Practice And The Prevention Of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Laura Sherburne Apr 2020

Nursing Practice And The Prevention Of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections, Laura Sherburne

Nursing Masters Papers

There are numerous healthcare associated infections (HAIs) that individuals can acquire while receiving care in an acute healthcare facility. Catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are HAIs that may cause increased lengths of stay, hospital costs, and mortality for patients. CAUTIs may be preventable through evidence-based nursing interventions and care. Using CINAHL, PubMed, and ProQuest, an evidence-based practice inquiry was conducted on the prevention of CAUTIs. Ten articles were chosen based on the relevance to the clinical question and quality of research. The articles were English language, peer-reviewed, and published within the last ten years. The levels of evidence ranged …

Increasing Patient Adherence To Gestational Weight Gain Goals In Pregnancy, Annie Vining

Dissertations

Abstract

Problem: The inability to maintain healthy weight gain during pregnancy may contribute to multiple pregnancy-related complications. Nutritional education and support may improve nutrition and vitamin consumption, and recommendations for healthy gestational weight gains have been published. However, pregnant women have reported minimal advice regarding healthy weight gain during pregnancy. A personalized, nutritional counseling program was initiated in a Midwestern, suburban OB-GYN private practice.

Methods: A quality improvement descriptive, correlational design was used. A cohort of pregnant women first trimester through six-weeks postpartum received individual counseling and face-to-face interaction at an office visit each trimester.

Results: Twenty ( …

Vaccines In Current Culture: The Hpv Vaccine Controversy, Alyssa Johnston

Senior Honors Theses

The use of vaccinations has drastically decreased mortality and morbidity rates related to infectious disease and has become an intrinsic part of modern health care. However, the fear of risks related to vaccines has been partially responsible for the decisions of many parents to delay or avoid vaccinating their children. The human papilloma virus (HPV) vaccine specifically is one of the most controversial vaccines in current culture due to reports of new onset or exacerbation of autoimmune diseases, infertility, and even death following its administration. This review synthesizes information regarding the relevance and safety of the HPV vaccine, as well …
