Improving Awareness And Access To Adaptive Sports, Alison S. Takagaki, Becki Cohill, Susan Macdermott

Spring 2020 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Adaptive sports can be defined as a recreational activity that allows individuals to improve their overall quality of life through an occupation they enjoy (Aytur et al., 2018). Barriers to participation in adaptive sports programs include a lack of resources, limited programs identified, and difficulty in finding the best program to fit the athletes’ needs (Lape et al., 2018). Adaptive sports have been seen as a holistic rehabilitative care plan that helps to improve self-esteem, build self-identity, increase confidence, and provide higher life satisfaction (DiVincenzo, 2013). Occupational therapists can play a role in helping enhance participation in adaptive sports by …

Publications and Research

Obesity remains a public health issue, especially for Blacks (or African Americans). Obesity is thought to reflect a complex interaction of socioenvironmental, biological, and cognitive factors. Yet, insufficient attention has been given to psychosocial factors like social cohesion within the African American community. Using multivariable linear regression, we examined the association between social cohesion, measured by the Social Cohesion and Trust scale, and body mass index (BMI) with cross-sectional data (n = 1467) from a cohort study (2008–2009). Greater social cohesion was associated with lower BMI (b = -0.88; 95% CI: −1.45, −0.32) in an unadjusted model. The association was …

Implementation Of A Fall Prevention Program, Hannah L. Gott

MSN Capstone Projects

Improving patient safety and outcomes are unequivocal goals of hospital organizations because the business of healthcare would not be possible without our patients. One of the most prevalent reasons patients can experience poor outcomes is due to falls. There are numerous interventions already in place in organizations to prevent and eliminate these patient events, but they still occur. This study aims to provide a practical and structural approach to eliminating patient falls by implementing a fall prevention program. This fall prevention curriculum includes utilization of bedside shift report, safety huddles, and code fall teams.

Investigating The Role Of Rap1a In Medial Arterial Vascular Calcification, Amelia Grace Haydel Apr 2020

Investigating The Role Of Rap1a In Medial Arterial Vascular Calcification, Amelia Grace Haydel

Honors Theses

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in the United States with one of the major contributors being vascular calcification, characterized by the deposition of calcium-phosphate hydroxyapatite. Once thought to be a passive process due to aging, medial vascular calcification is becoming better understood as a tightly regulated, cellmediated process. Vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) within the medial arterial layer respond to inflammation, oxidative stress, and changes in pyrophosphate levels, which induce differentiation into osteoblast-like cells. Fibroblasts within the adventitial layer (AFBs) also alter their function in response to vascular calcification signaling, although this is largely understudied. The AGE/RAGE …
