Case Series: Discordance Between Visible Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Defects And Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomographic Analysis In Patients With Glaucoma, Joseph Sowka Od, Leticia Rousso Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) has become a common modality in glaucoma diagnosis. Ease of use, comfort, and a comparative normative database makes this technology very popular with patients and practitioners. However, despite the sophistication of this technology, it may miss pathologic abnormalities of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) or be misinterpreted by practitioners based upon comparisons to a normative database.

Purpose: To illustrate discordance between clinical examination and SD-OCT analysis in patients with glaucoma.

Case Reports: Examples of three patients with glaucoma who had photographically and ophthalmoscopically visible RNFL defects who had SD-OCT analyses that fell …

Incentive Sensitization For Exercise Reinforcement To Increase Exercise Behaviors, Kyle D. Flack, Harry M. Hays, Jack Moreland Apr 2020

Incentive Sensitization For Exercise Reinforcement To Increase Exercise Behaviors, Kyle D. Flack, Harry M. Hays, Jack Moreland

Dietetics and Human Nutrition Faculty Publications

Individuals can be sensitized to the reinforcing effects of exercise, although it is unknown if this process increases habitual exercise behavior. Sedentary men and women (body mass index: 25–35 kg/m2, N = 52) participated in a 12-week aerobic exercise intervention. Exercise reinforcement was determined by how much work was performed for exercise relative to a sedentary alternative in a progressive ratio schedule task. Habitual physical activity was assessed via accelerometry. Post-intervention increases in exercise reinforcement predicted increases in physical activity bouts among those who expended over 2000 kcal per week in exercise and who compensated for less than …

Wai Puna: An Indigenous Model Of Māori Water Safety And Health In Aotearoa, New Zealand, Chanel Phillips Ph.D.

International Journal of Aquatic Research and Education

Māori (the indigenous peoples of Aotearoa, New Zealand) are intimately connected to wai (i.e., water) yet are overrepresented in New Zealand’s drowning statistics each year. On average Māori account for 20-24% of all preventable and non-preventable drowning fatalities, despite comprising only 15 percent of New Zealand’s population. Drowning remains a significant issue posing a threat to whānau (i.e., families) through premature death being imminent and whakapapa (i.e., genealogy) being interrupted. There is limited research that has examined Māori and indigenous understandings of water safety within the literature and limited studies that have investigated the issue of Māori drowning from a …

It's In The Bag: Tidal Volumes In Adult And Pediatric Bag Valve Masks, Benjamin Dafilou, Daniel Schwester, Nathan Ruhl, Andreia Marques-Baptista

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

Introduction: A bag valve mask (BVM) is a life saving device used by all levels of health care professionals during resuscitative care. We focus most of our time optimizing the patient's position, firmly securing the mask, and frequency of ventilations. However, despite our best efforts to control these factors, we may still be precipitating harm to the patient. Multiple studies have shown the tidal volumes typically delivered by the adult BVM are often higher than recommended for lung-protective ventilation protocols. In this study we measure and compare the ventilation parameters delivered by the adult and pediatric BVM ventilators. Methods: A …

Public Health Sciences Student Work

Purpose: African Immigrant students contribute to the diversity of West Chester University (WCU); however, little is known about how to promote their well-being, retention, and success. This is due to African immigrants often being grouped with African American students in academic research, masking any differences between these two groups. Immigrant students may face unique challenges and stressors associated with adapting to life in the US which can affect their health and academic success. For this reason, we assess sources of stress and social support needs for African immigrant students at WCU.

Methods: This study uses a qualitative design that relies …

Iron Deficiency Anemia: An Unexpected Cause Of An Acute Occipital Lobe Stroke In An Otherwise Healthy Young Woman, Qian Zhang, Khine S. Shan, Conor O'Sullivan, Travis C. Nace

Abington Jefferson Health Papers

A 29-year-old caucasian woman who presented to the hospital with an acute onset of right eye visual disturbance and headache was found to have an acute left occipital lobe infarction. Past medical history was significant for iron deficiency anemia (IDA) secondary to menorrhagia. Her initial hemoglobin level was 7.8 G/DL, and her symptoms improved after iron and blood transfusions. Hypercoagulable studies were completed in the outpatient setting, and the results were unremarkable. Her acute stroke was most likely related to IDA as she had low cardiovascular risk factors along with a negative complete stroke workup.

Living Sweet: A Multi-Functional Mobile-Phone Application Strategy For Adults With Uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Chantel K. Anderson

Evidence-Based Practice Project Reports

Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), one of the most common chronic diseases, is increasing worldwide, and once diagnosed, lifetime self-management is critical to maintain glycemic control (Vermeire et al., 2005; American Diabetes Association (ADA), 2018). Management of T2DM has been acknowledged as challenging due to the need for strict lifestyle adaptations. From a public health perspective, uncontrolled diabetes leads to increased healthcare costs, secondary complications, and ultimately severe disabilities (ADA, 2018). The purpose of this evidencebased practice (EBP) project was to evaluate the effectiveness of a diabetes-specific mobile health application (MHA) on glycated-hemoglobin (HbA1C), self-care perception (SCP), and self-care behaviors …

Preventing Readmissions Through Community Health Nursing, Stephanie Dawson Apr 2020

Preventing Readmissions Through Community Health Nursing, Stephanie Dawson

MSN Capstone Projects

Incorporating community health nurses to follow patients with a moderate to high risk of readmission post-discharge could improve the risk of readmission for these patients. When a patient is discharged from the hospital, they can become overwhelmed and not be adequately prepared to go home despite the discharge education given (Kenney-Lueptow, 2020). Telephone follow up is a low-cost way to decrease readmissions and provide continued education to the patients (Heitkam, 2019). Utilizing the bedside nurses that have been caring for the patients in the hospital can create a greater sense of community for the hospital and its population. By connecting …

Measurement Of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting Status: Perspectives From Healthcare Providers, Policymakers, Programme Implementers, And Researchers, Dennis Matanda

Reproductive Health

Among practicing communities, female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is a highly sensitive and emotionally charged issue, and open discussion is often considered taboo. Not only may it be difficult to motivate people to discuss the topic, but the validity of their responses may be questionable. These factors make research on FGM/C challenging and hence the need for careful consideration of research methodologies. There is a need for proper documentation of the strengths and limitations of the various data-collection methodologies to assist in generating reliable data for programmatic efforts toward FGM/C abandonment. This working paper describes a study undertaken to highlight methodological …

When And How Does Law Effectively Reduce The Practice Of Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting?, Josephine Wouango, Susan L. Ostermann, Daniel Mwanga

Reproductive Health

Female genital mutilation/cutting (FGM/C) is recognized globally as carrying risks to both the physical and psychological health of girls and women and is widely considered a violation of human rights. An estimated 200 million girls and women in 30 countries have undergone FGM/C and as many as 30 million girls younger than 15 years of age are at risk. A common policy response to FGM/C is to call for the enactment and enforcement of criminal prohibitions on the practice. Yet, compliance with laws is complex: it can be motivated and undercut by moral, social, religious, and incentive-based factors. The study …

The Relation Between Linguistic Awareness Skills And Spelling In Adults: A Comparison Among Scoring Procedures, Victoria S. Henbest, Lisa A. Fitton Ph.D., Krystal L. Werfel, Kenn Apel

Faculty Publications

Purpose: Spelling is a skill that relies on an individual’s linguistic awareness, the ability to overtly manipulate language. The ability to accurately spell is important for academic and career success into adulthood. The spelling skills of adults have received some attention in the literature, but there is limited information regarding which approach for analyzing adults’ spelling is optimal for guiding instruction or intervention for those who struggle. Thus, we aimed to examine the concurrent validity of four different scoring methods for measuring adults’ spellings (a dichotomous scoring method and three continuous methods) and to determine whether adults’ linguistic awareness skills …

The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire In Randomized Controlled Trials Of Treatment For Ulcerative Colitis: Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Aaron Yarlas, Stephen Maher, Martha Bayliss, Andrew Lovley, Joseph C. Cappelleri, Andrew G. Bushmakin, Marco D. Dibonaventura

Journal of Patient-Centered Research and Reviews

Purpose: The 32-item Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ-32) is the most frequently used instrument to capture disease-specific quality of life in randomized clinical trials for ulcerative colitis. This review and meta-analysis provides the first synthesis of evidence regarding the sensitivity of IBDQ-32 total and domain scores to treatment efficacy.

Methods: A systematic literature search and risk-of-bias assessment yielded 14 articles that were included in the primary analysis. Treatments were categorized as efficacious if they met the primary efficacy endpoint (which was not the IBDQ-32); otherwise they were categorized as non-efficacious. A continuous measure of treatment efficacy was calculated for …
