The aim of this study was to develop and describe methods on how to conduct virtual focus groups with adults with intellectual disability. Using a community-engaged research approach, adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities helped develop virtual focus group methods. We report on the implementation of these methods through an illustrative application of applying these adaptations to virtual focus groups with 13 adults with intellectual disability in a study assessing their perspectives on mental health therapy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The onset of hearing loss due to vestibular schwannomas (VS) is inevitable but does not correlate with the size of the tumor. In patients with Neurofibromatosis Type 2 (NF2) and VS, we previously found an association between pre-contrast fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging (FLAIR MRI) signal in the labyrinth and hearing loss. Despite significant advancement in cancer treatments, therapies with minimal toxicity to healthy cells are still limited. One targetable weakness of cancer cells is their sensitivity to oxidative stress. We find that the combination of two antioxidants—the common food additive tert-butylhydroquinone (tBHQ) and a manganese porphyrin in clinical trials, MnTnBuOE-2-PyP5+ (MnBuOE)—increases oxidative stress and causes apoptotic death in several cancer cell lines, but not in mouse primary fibroblasts. Investigating the mechanism of cell death, MnBuOE is observed to catalyze the oxidation of tBHQ, producing the electrophilic quinone tert-butylquinone (tBQ). Rates of fatal overdose due to opioid and substance use in Richmond, Virginia increased from 44.6 in 2018 to 129.5 per 100,000 city residents in 2023. The underlying contexts surrounding the increase in substance use and overdoses in Richmond, Virginia remains poorly understood.

Methods:

Using community based participatory research principles (CBPR), a series of “community conversations” with neighborhood residents were conducted between May–December 2023. Academic research institutions using REDCap often face challenges aligning with U.S. FDA requirements for electronic records and signatures under 21 CFR Part 11 (Part 11). A National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences(NCATS) working group developed an implementation guide for Part 11 compliance in REDCap. Within six months after release, 259 individuals representing 164 institutions accessed the guide. Individuals who downloaded the guide reported reduced vendor reliance, improved documentation, and establishment Part 11-ready REDCap instances. This working group demonstrated how collaboration between technical and regulatory experts at many peer institutions is effective in improving regulatory compliance across the research enterprise.

Introduction Solid pseudopapillary epithelial neoplasm (SPEN) is a rare pancreatic tumor that typically presents in adult women and is usually asymptomatic. Case presentation A 12-year-old male presented to the emergency department with worsening abdominal pain one day after suffering mild abdominal trauma during a soccer match. Physical exam showed diffuse abdominal tenderness and guarding. CT abdomen with IV contrast showed a heterogeneous, round structure adjacent to the pancreatic tail with mass effect upon the spleen. Biallelic deficiencies of CD27 and its ligand CD70 underlie selective susceptibility to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection and its acute and chronic complications, underscoring their non-redundant roles in anti-EBV immunity. To date, 16 pathogenic CD27 variants have been reported. Here, we describe three patients from two unrelated families, homozygous for a novel loss-of-function (LOF) CD27 variant, resulting in substitution of serine 70 with proline (S70P). All three patients presented with EBV viremia and lymphoproliferative disease, with variable immune dysregulation or recurrent otosinopulmonary infections. One patient developed EBV-associated Hodgkin lymphoma. Functional studies demonstrated that the S70P variant impaired surface expression of CD27 …

We examined the diagnostic utility of urinalyses (UAs) in psychiatric admissions. Admission UAs led to diagnosis of clinical urinary tract infections in 1.7% of cases. Among those treated with antibiotics, inappropriate prescriptions occurred in 71.3% of cases, with increased odds in older age, female sex, positive cultures, and certain psychiatric diagnoses.

Background: Trastuzumab, combined with chemotherapy, is the current standard treatment for both metastatic and early-stage HER2-positive (HER2 +) breast cancer. One of the mechanisms of action of trastuzumab is antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC), which involves engaging FcγRIIIA (CD16) on natural killer (NK) cells. A competent immune system and properly functioning NK cells are crucial for effective ADCC, as they can influence favorable clinical outcomes. Penelitian bertujuan untuk mempelajari penggunaan kulit buah pisang Muli dalam ransum terhadap fermentabilitas dan kecernaan (in vitro). Penelitian menggunakan rancangan acak lengkap dengan 4 perlakuan ransum yang mengandung 10, 20, 30, dan 40% kulit buah pisang Muli. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis dengan menggunakan Uji Duncan. BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Food insecurity and pediatric obesity have increased concurrently in the U.S., raising questions about the role of Federal Nutrition Assistance Programs (FNAPs) in shaping weight outcomes. This systematic review examined evidence on relationships between FNAP participation and pediatric weight outcomes.

METHODS: Six databases were searched for U.S.-based, peer-reviewed studies published through July 2024 that assessed FNAP participation and pediatric weight outcomes.

RESULTS: Seventy-five studies met the inclusion criteria, and no consistent pattern indicated that any single FNAP or program type (educational setting-based or direct financial support) reliably reduced or increased childhood overweight or obesity risk. Twenty studies found statistically …

We use Taiwan's wind energy industry as a case study to validate the process.
