Background

Hypertensive disorders during pregnancy remain one of the leading causes of maternal and fetal complications worldwide, particularly among underserved and minority populations. Spanish-speaking women often experience barriers related to language, limited health literacy, and reduced access to culturally appropriate education, which may delay the recognition of warning signs associated with pregnancy complications. This viewpoint draws lessons from the elimination of visceral leishmaniasis (VL) as a public health problem in the Southeast Asia region (SEAR) to inform efforts in East Africa (EA), now the global epicenter of Leishmania donovani transmission. VL is fatal and there is no licensed vaccine. Success in India relied on robust surveillance, rapid diagnosis, single-dose treatment, vector control, and multi-partner coordination. EA faces additional challenges than SEAR with multiple sand fly vectors, sensitive diagnostics and longer treatment regimens, high population mobility, and gaps in ecological and epidemiological knowledge. The failure to prevent brain tumors, including both recurrent primary and metastatic brain tumors, is the primary cause of patients' mortality. We developed a novel whole tumor-cell vaccine to rapidly induce long-duration brain-resident memory T (TRM) cells that prevent brain tumor progression. Ten Fgl2-KO primary and metastatic tumor cell lines, generated via CRISPR/Cas9, were used to vaccinate mice and for intracranial challenges with the WT tumor cells. Not only did vaccinated mice reject these tumor cell challenges, but also more than half of these mice became long-duration survivors. Background: Understanding the median nerve's position relative to surrounding anatomy is essential; however, there are many variations among individuals. This study assesses differences in median nerve position with or without palmaris longus (PL). We hypothesize that PL presence alters median nerve position, resulting in a greater distance to the skin volar surface, a decreased distance to the radius volar surface, and an increased distance to the flexor carpi radialis (FCR).

We discuss generalizability analyses under a partially nested trial design, where part of the trial is nested within a cohort of trial-eligible individuals, while the rest of the trial is not nested. This design arises, for example, when only some centers participating in a trial are able to collect data on non-randomized individuals, or when data on non-randomized individuals cannot be collected for the full duration of the trial. Breast surgery for aesthetic purposes, such as breast augmentation or breast reduction, and breast reconstruction after cancer treatment require an accurate structural (anatomical) and mechanical (functional) understanding of the breast components, including the fascial-ligamentous support system of the breast, to achieve optimal results. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive description of the mechanical behavior of the ligamentous and fascial connective tissues of the human female breast. Background: Segmental tracheal resection is rarely needed for advanced thyroid cancer but is among the most complex, high-risk thyroid surgeries.

Methods: Retrospective study of patients undergoing segmental tracheal resection for thyroid cancer at MD Anderson Cancer Center (2005-2024).

Results: We identified 120 patients with a median follow-up of 4.6 years (range 0.02-16.38). Papillary thyroid cancer was most common (68%). The median number of tracheal rings resected was 4 (range 1-9). Seventeen (14%) patients had a new tracheostomy placed at the time of surgery, with 11 (9%) remaining trach-dependent at last follow-up. Twenty-six (22%) patients had a return to the operating …

Safe firearm storage is critical for injury prevention, yet there is limited evidence surrounding effective interventions to promote storage behaviors among owners. One potential avenue for intervention is at the point-of-sale, a concept well-proven in the nutrition promotion and tobacco cessation space. This study explored firearm retailer attitudes toward a firearm storage intervention delivered at the point of sale. Seventeen in-depth interviews were conducted with firearm retailers from a suburban gun shop in Fort Bend, USA. Background: Medical students experience psychological stress due to academic workload, thereby leading to a reduction in overall well-being. In response, medical schools are incorporating wellness activities into the curriculum. However, single-session events have not been rigorously evaluated. This pilot study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of a single-session speaker event and examined pre- versus post-event differences in mean stress and happiness scores among survey respondents.

Localised scleroderma, also known as morphea, is an immune-mediated fibrosing disorder that primarily affects the skin and subcutaneous tissues. While traditionally considered purely a cutaneous disease, extracutaneous manifestations (especially inflammatory arthritis) are increasingly being appreciated. The combined presence of morphea and inflammatory arthritis is rare and can be difficult to diagnose, particularly when inflammatory markers and serological testing are non-contributory.

Purpose: Chemoradiation (CRT) is the standard of treatment for localized anal squamous cell carcinoma (SCCA). Although cure rates are high, acute and late toxicities are common. There are increasing published data regarding vaginal stenosis and erectile dysfunction; however, the nature and impact of holistic sexual dysfunction after pelvic radiation, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM), remains poorly characterized. In this case report, we describe a patient who presented to their primary care provider with abdominal pain after returning from travel to the Caribbean island of St. Croix. The patient reported two weeks of epigastric abdominal pain, dyspepsia, nausea, and night sweats. Following an initial evaluation that revealed eosinophilia with unclear etiology, they were referred to an infectious disease clinic. Through a targeted infectious evaluation and workup, the patient was diagnosed with acute schistosomiasis syndrome and was treated with praziquantel. Treatment resulted in the complete resolution of her symptoms, and follow-up laboratory evaluation showed complete resolution of her eosinophilia. …

This doctoral capstone experience (DCE) was completed at the Center for Disability Services (CDS) and focused on developing and implementing a social skills program for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Many existing social skills programs focus on general or work-related skills, but there is a need for programs that help individuals apply social skills during real-life community activities. This project aimed to address that gap by creating a structured, occupation-based program within an adult day skill-building day center.

Objective: To establish whether infants with macrocephaly and non-acute subdural hematomas (SDHs) had missed opportunities for measuring fronto-occipital circumference (FOC) and obtaining neuroimaging prior to diagnosis. Macrocephaly due to SDH in infancy is initially detected by FOC measurements and/or neuroimaging, as neurologic symptoms may be subtle or missed.

Methods: Retrospective chart review of infants with macrocephaly and non-acute SDHs referred to child abuse pediatricians for suspected abusive head trauma (AHT) over an 8-year period. PURPOSE: We describe a case of intraocular amyloidosis presenting as secondary glaucoma, highlighting the clinical presentation and pathologic correlates. We also review the medical literature on all prior reported cases and discuss the diagnostic challenges pertinent to this particular case.

OBSERVATIONS: We report the case of a 72-year-old man presenting with medically intractable elevations of intraocular pressure. On clinical examination, the anterior segment was unremarkable, but there were significant vitreous opacities. The patient underwent tube shunt surgery, and a simultaneous aqueous humor biopsy was acellular and nondiagnostic. A subsequent pars plana vitrectomy demonstrated amyloid aggregates on histology.
