Introduction: The hyoid bone plays an important role in speaking, swallowing, and supporting the tongue. Hyoid bone fractures account for 0.002% of all fractures and are typically seen in cases dealing with strangulations or a blunt force trauma such as occurs from vehicle accidents or martial arts injuries. Introduction: The ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) is found in the medial aspect of the elbow joint capsule and is commonly injured in baseball pitchers. The common flexor tendon (CFT) is also found in the medial elbow and is less commonly injured. Both structures are key in overhead throwing, repaired via surgery, and injured due to valgus stress placed on the elbow. There is research on UCL injuries but very little on CFT injuries. Introduction: Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS) is a rare and complex condition caused by the compression of neurovascular structures in the thoracic outlet. TOS is estimated to affect 3 to 80 individuals per 1,000,000 annually, with neurogenic TOS accounting for approximately 95% of cases. Athletes who perform repetitive overhead motions are at higher risk due to increased stress on the brachial plexus. Diagnosis can be challenging as symptoms such as pain, numbness, and weakness, often mimic other conditions such as nerve entrapment or tendon pathologies. Dehydration can be problematic for the physically active population, as it can lead to decreases in physical and cognitive performance. OBJECTIVE: Pregnant patients with a previous spontaneous preterm birth are at high risk for recurrent (spontaneous) preterm birth. We investigated whether the number of previous spontaneous preterm births, gestational age of the previous birth and cervical length could stratify patients into different risk groups for recurrence to investigate whether there is a risk group that does not require additional interventions.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to: (1) identify optimal blended food recipe options using local flours; (2) assess behaviors, attitudes, and practices around the use of blended foods among nutritionally vulnerable groups in Haiti; and (3) evaluate the nutrient composition of prototype blended food product relative to nutrient requirements for vulnerable populations.

Oculopharyngodistal myopathy (OPDM) is characterized by ptosis, ophthalmoparesis, dysphagia, and distal weakness. Myopathological features include rimmed vacuoles and intranuclear inclusions. OPDM is associated with a pathogenic CGG repeat expansions in the 5'UTR of LRP12, NOTCH2NLC, GIPC1, RILPL1 and ABCD3. Translation of the repeat in the glycine reading frame has been demonstrated for expansions in FMR1, NOTCH2NLC and GIPC1. BACKGROUND: Mucosal melanomas (MM) arise from mucosal melanocytes at various anatomical sites. These tumors are rare, highly aggressive, and often associated with poor outcomes. Current treatments, including immune checkpoint inhibitors, show limited efficacy in advanced disease. Compared with cutaneous melanomas, there is a lack of data on the immunogenicity and interferon (IFN)-γ sensitivity of MM. The western painted turtle, Chrysemys picta bellii, has the greatest tolerance to anoxia of any tetrapod studied to date. These turtles reside in the northern United States and southern Canada, and survive months of anoxia while submerged in ice-locked ponds and bogs. Reference genomes provide an important resource for elucidating the molecular bases for such unique physiological traits. The initial reference genome for this species, published in 2013, is highly fragmented, thereby limiting downstream analyses and biological interpretation. This report describes a female patient in her 60s with an immune-mediated necrotising myopathy (IMNM) occurring after semaglutide use. She was found to have progressive dysphagia, dysphonia, proximal muscle weakness and creatine kinase elevation over a 4-month course. Her symptoms were preceded by a single dose of semaglutide. Her work-up revealed features consistent with necrotising myopathy with inflammatory infiltrate on biopsy, and she responded to immunosuppression with corticosteroids and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). She gradually improved and successfully returned to her baseline functional status while off immunosuppression for several months and with continued avoidance of glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. While vaccination remains central to controlling the COVID-19 pandemic, the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 variants with partial resistance to immune responses has highlighted the need for complementary therapeutic strategies. Among these, antiviral agents that inhibit viral entry mechanisms are of particular interest. Animal venoms, especially scorpion venoms, are a rich source of bioactive peptides with potential antiviral properties. Background

Unpredictability in the child’s environment has recently emerged as a significant and unique form of early life adversity (ELA). Cross-sectional studies have linked childhood unpredictability with increased post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms in adults; however, no prospective studies have tested the link between childhood unpredictability and PTSD risk in later life, nor what processes, such as increased anhedonia symptoms, might mediate such risk. Here, we leveraged three distinct prospective, longitudinal cohorts to test the hypothesis that unpredictability during childhood contributes to adult PTSD via worsening anhedonia symptoms.

Nardilysin (NRDC) plays a role in multiple cellular functions in diverse cellular compartments, including ectodomain shedding in the plasma membrane, as well as chaperoning a key Krebs cycle enzyme in mitochondria. We had previously reported limited clinical information from two individuals with homozygous frameshift variants in NRDC. With inclusion of previously published individuals, here we report 14 individuals (10 females, four males) from nine unrelated families carrying homozygous NRDC pathogenic variants. Background: Sepsis is a life-threatening complication of infection with high mortality. A high-throughput analysis of circulating blood proteins may provide mechanistic insight and potent therapeutic targets for the prevention of sepsis.

Methods: We used multivariable Cox regression analysis to examine the association of 4955 plasma proteins, measured by SomaScan, with the risk of incident sepsis among 11 065 participants of the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study (visit 3 in 1993 to 1995; mean age, 60.1 years, 54.4% female, 21.0% Black). Proteins (false discovery rate [FDR] of P < 0.05) discovered at visit 3 were replicated using data at visit 5 (n = 4869 in 2011 to 2013: mean age, 75.5 years) and in the Cardiovascular Health Study (CHS) (n = 3512 in 1992 to 1993; mean age, 74.5 years). Canonical pathways were identified by enrichment analyses.

Historically, wearable technology in sport was primarily used for performance tracking, including workload monitoring, heart rate assessment, and movement quantification. Introduction: Patellar instability is a common knee pathology, particularly among adolescents and young adults, with reported incidence rates ranging from 7 to 77 per 100,000 person-years. Following an initial patellar dislocation, recurrence rates have been reported as high as 86%, particularly in patients with underlying anatomic risk factors. Identification of the multifactorial contributors to patellar instability is critical to guide appropriate management and prevent recurrent episodes. Introduction: The timed single-leg step-down (SLSD) test is widely used in clinical and sports settings to assess lower extremity function and injury risk, yet the specific biomechanical determinants of performance on this test remain poorly understood.
