Early Life Stress Predicts Future Conduct Disorder In Adolescents, Savannah Ellis
Biological Sciences Undergraduate Honors Theses
Early Life Stress (ELS) and adversity increase people’s risk for developing mental, social, or emotional dysregulation and disorders later in life. The objective of this study was to test whether ELS in adolescents could prospectively predict future conduct disorder. The study additionally tested potential neural mediators of the effect of ELS on future conduct disorder, and specifically targeted the structural connections from the anterior insula and medial prefrontal cortex to the Nucleus Accumbens (NAcc). Data for the project came from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (ABCD study), which is a longitudinal multi-site consortium funded by the National Institutes of …

Background: Eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) is a chronic inflammatory disorder diagnosed in children with painful or difficult swallowing, vomiting, or poor weight gain. Current treatment models adopt a trial-and-error approach in regard EoE treatment, including restrictive elimination diets, proton pump inhibitors, and topical budesonide. This approach can delay effective treatment which increases risk of disease progression and increases medical costs to families for frequent clinic visits and endoscopy. Objectives/Goal: The objective of this study is to determine the CYP3A5 genotype and expression of patients with eosinophilic esophagitis to discover which patients will respond to standard dosing of topical budesonide treatment (1, …

Pathology, East Africa
Introduction: Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell neoplasm that constitutes 10–15% of all hematopoietic neoplasms. Kenya is placed among the top five African countries for MM incidence and MM-related mortality. Prior studies have suggested that the aberrant expression of Cyclin D1, CD56, CD117 and Ki-67 on neoplastic plasma cells is useful in disease prognostication. The prevalence and significance of expression of these markers in a cohort of MM cases in Kenya has not been studied previously.
Methods: A retrospective cross-sectional study was carried out at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi. The study population included 83 MM …

Point-of-care ultrasonography (POCUS) is being increasingly incorporated in pre-clerkship physical diagnosis courses. However, the development of such a curriculum at many medical schools is limited by financial constraints, the availability of trained faculty, and the recent COVID-19 pandemic. Here, we describe an optional POCUS curriculum that circumvents these barriers while still providing basic image acquisition skills and pathophysiological correlations.

Acute patellar tendon or quadriceps tendon rupture is a severely debilitating injury resulting in complete loss of the knee extensor mechanism. Early diagnosis and prompt surgical repair are preferential in order to achieve good functional outcomes. In the setting of trauma and knee pain, plain film radiographs of the knee are obtained to rule out fractures. Patellar and quadriceps tendon rupture is primarily a clinical diagnosis but can benefit from additional imaging to differentiate between a partial and complete tear when there is uncertainty. Our goal is to assess the reliability and reproducibility of radiographic features in a population with …

Infection is a significant complication seen in orthopaedic surgery. In such cases, samples are sent to be cultured for aerobes, anaerobes, acid-fast bacilli (AFB) and fungi. AFB and fungi are generally slow-growing, difficult to culture, and rarely the pathogen, whereas aerobic and anaerobic cultures are routinely positive and guide antibiotic treatment. The goal of this study is to evaluate the value of routinely ordering AFB and fungal cultures in the setting of foot and ankle surgery.

Non-conscious processing of human memory has traditionally been difficult to objectively measure and thus understand. A prior study on a group of hippocampal amnesia (N = 3) patients and healthy controls (N = 6) used a novel procedure for capturing neural correlates of implicit memory using event-related potentials (ERPs): old and new items were equated for varying levels of memory awareness, with ERP differences observed from 400 to 800 ms in bilateral parietal regions that were hippocampal-dependent. The current investigation sought to address the limitations of that study by increasing the sample of healthy subjects (N = 54), applying new …

Objective:
Parental stress can have an impact on health outcomes of chronically ill children (Cousino & Hazen, 2013). Pediatric psychologists are well suited to address these issues with understanding of empirically supported treatments, impact of mental health on medical care behaviors, and parent–child interactions (Ernst et al., 2015). Use of empirically supported treatments, such as graduated exposure therapy (ET), within an uncontrolled environment such as an inpatient setting can be challenging. This case study illustrates adaptation of ET in an inpatient setting to address parental mastery of medical care.Method:
ET was implemented with a mother …Creating An Occupational Therapy Based Preschool Curriculum, Taelor Gartman

The Eleanor Mann School of Nursing Undergraduate Honors Theses
Less than half of the world’s infants and young children are breastfed despite the major benefits and recommendations by WHO. Commercial milk formula has been advertised so intensely that it has produced many misleading marketing styles that lead parents to believe commercial milk formula has better benefits than breastmilk. The United States is one of the few countries that have yet to act on WHO’s International Code of Marketing for Breastmilk to decrease the aggressive marketing styles in place. By only placing pictures of happy babies on the formula cans, it leads parents to believe that their baby would be …
