An Examination Of Dyadic Diabetes Self-Management Education For Patients And Care Partners: A Scoping Review, Jessica L. Tucker
An Examination Of Dyadic Diabetes Self-Management Education For Patients And Care Partners: A Scoping Review, Jessica L. Tucker
Honors Theses
Diabetes self-management education and support (DSMES) programs are crucial in equipping individuals with the necessary knowledge and skills. Involving care partners in diabetes management acknowledges that it is a collaborative effort within a social context, emphasizing the importance of integrating care partners into educational interventions. This approach offers benefits like emotional and practical support, shared responsibility in managing diabetes, enhanced treatment adherence, and improved communication.
To understand this concept better, this review's objectives are defining dyadic relationships, exploring implementation logistics, and assessing program outcomes and limitations to inform future research and program development.
This study revealed inconsistent terminology and definitions …

We assessed the PREDICT v 2.2 for prognosis of breast cancer patients with pathogenic germline BRCA1 and BRCA2 variants, using follow-up data from 5453 BRCA1/2 carriers from the Consortium of Investigators of Modifiers of BRCA1/2 (CIMBA) and the Breast Cancer Association Consortium (BCAC). PREDICT for estrogen receptor (ER)-negative breast cancer had modest discrimination for BRCA1 carrier patients overall (Gönen & Heller unbiased concordance 0.65 in CIMBA, 0.64 in BCAC), but it distinguished clearly the high-mortality group from lower risk categories. In an analysis of low to high risk categories by PREDICT score percentiles, the observed mortality was consistently lower than …

Alzheimer's disease (AD) and stroke are two interrelated neurodegenerative disorders which are the leading cause of death and affect the neurons in the brain and central nervous system. Although amyloid-β aggregation, tau hyperphosphorylation, and inflammation are the hallmarks of AD, the exact cause and origin of AD are still undefined. Recent enormous fundamental discoveries suggest that the amyloid hypothesis of AD has not been proven and anti-amyloid therapies that remove amyloid deposition have not yet slowed cognitive decline. However, stroke, mainly ischemic stroke (IS), is caused by an interruption in the cerebral blood flow. Significant features of both disorders are …

Alcohol misuse, directly or indirectly as a result of its metabolism, negatively impacts most tissues, including four with critical roles in energy metabolism regulation: the liver, pancreas, adipose, and skeletal muscle. Mitochondria have long been studied for their biosynthetic roles, such as ATP synthesis and initiation of apoptosis. However, current research has provided evidence that mitochondria participate in myriad cellular processes, including immune activation, nutrient sensing in pancreatic β-cells, and skeletal muscle stem and progenitor cell differentiation. The literature indicates that alcohol impairs mitochondrial respiratory capacity, promoting reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and disrupting mitochondrial dynamics, leading to dysfunctional mitochondria …

Pathological fibrosis is distinguished from physiological wound healing by persistent myofibroblast activation, suggesting that therapies that induce myofibroblast apoptosis selectively could prevent progression and potentially reverse the established fibrosis, such as for scleroderma (a heterogeneous autoimmune disease characterized by multiorgan fibrosis). Navitoclax (NAVI) is a BCL-2/BCL-xL inhibitor with antifibrotic properties and has been investigated as a potential therapeutic for fibrosis. NAVI makes myofibroblasts particularly vulnerable to apoptosis. However, despite NAVI's significant potency, clinical translation of BCL-2 inhibitors, NAVI in this case, is hindered due to the risk of thrombocytopenia. Therefore, in this work, we utilized a newly developed ionic liquid …

BACKGROUND: Establishment of a secure airway is a critical part of neonatal resuscitation in the delivery room and the neonatal intensive care unit. Videolaryngoscopy has the potential to facilitate successful endotracheal intubation, and decrease adverse consequences of a delay in airway stabilization. Videolaryngoscopy may enhance visualization of the glottis and intubation success in neonates. This is an update of a review first published in 2015, and updated in 2018.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the effectiveness and safety of videolaryngoscopy compared to direct laryngoscopy in decreasing the time and attempts required for endotracheal intubation and increasing the success rate on first intubation …
Development Of Live Attenuated A. Hydrophila Vaccines And Understanding Of Macrophage-Aeromonas Hydrophila Interactions, Eda Ozdemir
Theses and Dissertations
Channel catfish farming is the largest aquaculture industry in the U.S., and virulent Aeromonas hydrophila is an important re-emerging bacterial pathogen of farmed catfish. A. hydrophila is ubiquitous in the aquatic environment and causes motile Aeromonas septicemia (MAS) in farmed catfish. A. hydrophila infection is challenging to treat due to rapidly progressive mass mortalities. Although florfenicol has been used in managing outbreaks, acute onset of anorexia, drug cost, and emergence of antimicrobial-resistant strains are significant concerns. Prevention of MAS by vaccination could be a promising approach, but a commercial vaccine is not available. Thus, it is critical to develop effective …

Identifying Limitations In Using Diagnostic Testing For Absorption Of Passive Maternal Immunity In Neonatal Beef Calves To Predict Pre-Weaning Disease, Alexis Charlotte Thompson
Theses and Dissertations
Calves are born agammaglobulinemic and rely on colostrum consumption for the transfer of maternal passive immunity. Calves that fail to absorb adequate amounts of maternal antibodies from colostrum are commonly referred to as having failed transfer of passive immunity (FTPI). The overall aim of this dissertation was to explore the usefulness of FTPI testing in neonatal beef calves to predict their risk for subsequent illness or death. The objectives were to evaluate the impact of FTPI on pre-weaning disease in beef and dairy calves, quantify and compare the variance in IgG concentrations measured by radial immunodiffusion and serum total protein …

Identifying Barriers To Data Use On U.S. Beef Cow-Calf Operations And Developing Solutions To Improve Cow-Calf Record-Keeping, William Isaac Jumper
Theses and Dissertations
Cattle health and production records (CHPR) are data collected by cattle producers and veterinarians in the form of measurements, observations, counts of events over time, and physiologic attributes that describe individual and group-level health and production. These data are useful to both veterinarians and cattle producers for making evidence-based decisions on cow-calf operations. Currently, there are no uniform, industry-wide methods of capturing and recording CHPR in the U.S. cow-calf industry. Although many cow-calf producers in the U.S. are thought to collect some form of CHPR, it is believed that relatively few are doing so in an electronic manner that facilitates …

Evolution And Epidemiology Of Channel Catfish Virus (Ccv), Arun Venugopalan
Theses and Dissertations
Channel catfish virus disease (CCVD) is the principal viral disease in the United States catfish industry. The CCVD is caused by channel catfish virus (CCV), with mortality reaching up to 100% in fingerlings. CCV is assigned taxonomically to the family Alloherpesviridae, genus Ictalurivirus, species Ictalurid herpesvirus 1 (IcHV-1). To date, virulence, immunogenicity, and genome plasticity of the CCV field isolates have not been investigated. Three genotypes of CCV (IcHV-1A, IcHV-1B, and BCAHV) were identified using restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis. Virulence assessment of three representative isolates of RFLP groups suggests that IcHV-1B (pooled survival [mean ± SE]: 58.3% ± …

CRISPR-Cas9 has been used successfully to introduce indels in somatic cells of rodents; however, precise editing of single nucleotides has been hampered by limitations of flexibility and efficiency. Here, we report technological modifications to the CRISPR-Cas9 vector system that now allows homology-directed repair-mediated precise editing of any proto-oncogene in murine somatic tissues to generate tumor models with high flexibility and efficiency. Somatic editing of either

Triggering receptor expressed on myeloid cells 2 (TREM2) plays important roles in brain microglial function in neurodegenerative diseases, but the role of TREM2 in the GBM TME has not been examined. Here, we found that TREM2 is highly expressed in myeloid subsets, including macrophages and microglia in human and mouse GBM tumors and that high TREM2 expression correlates with poor prognosis in patients with GBM. TREM2 loss of function in human macrophages and mouse myeloid cells increased interferon-γ-induced immunoactivation, proinflammatory polarization, and tumoricidal capacity. In orthotopic mouse GBM models, mice with chronic and acute Trem2 loss of function exhibited decreased …

INTRODUCTION: The active straight leg raise (ASLR) test assesses load transfer through the pelvis. During the ASLR, intraabdominal pressure (IAP) rises, increasing the load on the lumbopelvic region. Several studies have shown a correlation between the magnitude of bladder base displacement (BBD) during the ASLR and lumbopelvic instability. Additionally, greater depression of the bladder and pelvic floor muscles is associated with motor control impairments associated with form and force closure. Pelvic stability belts are a common therapeutic intervention for individuals who report pelvic girdle pain. Their mechanism of action is to improve form closure and assist force closure and motor …

Does The Use Of Vestibular Infrared Video Goggles Impact Physical Therapy Student’S Ability To Diagnose The Direction Of Nystagmus?, Erin Farmer, Tanna Mcpherson, Sabrina Samuels, Katherine Wellborn, Jeanne Welch
Research Day
INTRODUCTION:
Vestibular goggles are infrared video goggles that can improve patient care by providing accurate assessment and treatment of vertigo, dizziness, and feelings of imbalance. These goggles track the eye movement allowing clinicians to evaluate the function of the vestibular system, which controls balance and spatial coordination. During an evaluation, the patient wears the infrared goggle while performing a series of movements designed to stimulate the vestibular system. The embedded infrared cameras capture eye motion, providing real time information to the clinician. Physical therapists (PT) need to be able to detect nystagmus and its direction in order to provide appropriate …

2000-2020 Nhis Studies: Factors Affecting Medication Adherence Rate In The Pediatric Population With Medical Complexity, Janice Tong, Savion Carswell, Erica Wong, Xinyu Wang, Yujin Kim
Research Day
Introduction
Children with medical complexity belong to a vulnerable patient population group that is defined by the interplay of chronic health conditions, high healthcare utilization, and severe limitations in cognitive and/or physical functioning. Members of this patient population often require a complex management and/or treatment regimen with the use of more than one medication. Pediatric nonadherence in medication can lead to increases in microbial resistance, adverse drug reactions, morbidity, and mortality. The consequences of this medication nonadherence may also cause slower recovery times, increased number of emergency department visits, and hospitalizations, which subsequently substantiates higher medical costs for families along …

A Seemingly Low Risk Patient Develops Urosepsis As A Complication Of Transrectal Prostate Biopsy: A Case Study, Nicole Peritz, Gabrielle Oquendo, Yuhyun Kang, Elijah Humphries, Joy Zarandy
Research Day
Background:
Prostate cancer (PCa) is the most common cancer in men, and the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United States. Approximately 1 million Americans undergo prostate biopsies annually, with 97% undergoing the transrectal prostate biopsy (TRPB). While TRPB is reliable and relatively low risk, nearly 7% of patients develop infectious complications, with 3% requiring hospitalization due to sepsis. Risk factors for developing infection post-TRPB include antibiotic resistance, >10 biopsy cores, diabetes mellitus, indwelling catheter, and African-American ethnicity. Identifying risk factors, considering a transperineal biopsy approach, and utilizing pre-procedural practices like rectal sterilization, screening urinalysis, prophylactic antibiotics, …

Malignancy Or Dermatophyte Infection? The Challenges In Evaluation Of Chronic Diffuse Rashes, Margi Nayak, Humaira Bibi, Anthony Cimmino, Xuan Ouyang, Jonathan Fairley
Research Day
Introduction: The purpose of our case presentation is to help understand the use of diagnostic studies in differentiating diffuse rashes with potentially underlying malignant etiology from infectious etiology.
A 40 y.o. F with a past medical history significant for anemia presented to the ED with painful rashes that had been getting worse for over 1 year. She mentioned that initially the rash began on her arm around the time when her 2 dogs were being treated for fungal infection and then it started spreading to her chest, back, upper extremities, lower extremities, abdomen, and genital areas as well. She described …

Pustular psoriasis is an uncommon subtype of psoriasis that dramatically affects the quality of life of affected patients. Pustules can emerge anywhere along the trunk, limbs, soles, palms, and fingers, which debilitates the functionality of these appendages. Currently, there are no approved treatments for pustular psoriasis in the US; off-label usage of psoriasis vulgaris medications is usually prescribed. These treatments are insufficient for patients with difficult to manage or severe forms of pustular psoriasis. Psoriasis vulgaris biologic medications mainly target the IL-17 and IL-23 axis. However, novel clinical findings have demonstrated that pustular psoriasis’s central inflammatory axis depends on the …

INTRODUCTION: Understanding spinal mechanics is the foundation for osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) training. With such knowledge, osteopathic physicians may confidently diagnose and treat spinal somatic dysfunctions. However, a dynamic and objective teaching tool to educate students on spinal mechanics has not been established. While 3D printing is gaining utility in academia, it is only just beginning to be employed within osteopathic educational settings. A literature review found a single study exploring the use of 3D printing to educate students on rib mechanics. Our study makes use of 3D printing to develop a functional model to teach and test students on …

Rare First Rib Pseudoarthrosis With Thoracic Outlet Syndrome In Pediatric Gymnast: A Case Report, Jessica M. Kraft, Ann L. Contrucci, Gary E. Freed
Research Day
Background: This case study evaluates the diagnosis and treatment of a 12 year old Caucasian male gymnast who had several diagnoses including an isolated first rib fracture, resultant pseudoarthrosis of the first rib, and the development of symptomatic thoracic outlet syndrome. We discuss the causes, prevalence, and suggestions for prompt diagnosis and treatment of these conditions in pediatric patients. Although all three conditions are rare in a child, this case highlights the importance of having a high clinical index of suspicion in recurrent pain in pre-pubertal athletes.
Case presentation: A 10 year old Caucasian male presented with a two to …
Is There Any Benefit To Adding Corticosteroids To Radiofrequency Ablation Treatments: A Systemic Review., Lee James, Petar Jen, Nikolas Jen, Stefan Jen
Is There Any Benefit To Adding Corticosteroids To Radiofrequency Ablation Treatments: A Systemic Review., Lee James, Petar Jen, Nikolas Jen, Stefan Jen
Research Day
Introduction: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a procedure done for chronic pain which uses thermal energy to nociceptive pathways with the goal of disrupting pain signaling. The thermal energy leads to nervous tissue disruption using radiofrequency currents through an electrode placed near the target area. RFA has been shown to have an increase in pain reduction as well as an increase in functional ability when compared to corticosteroid injections (CSI), another common treatment for both acute and chronic pain. Many clinicians have logically combined RFA and CI together to achieve a synergistic effect. This study aims to look at the current …

INTRODUCTION: Focal mechanical vibration (FMV) uses mechanical vibration to stimulate specific muscles or areas of the body. The reported benefits include increased muscle strength, decreased pain, improved range of motion (ROM), and enhanced muscle coordination. When FMV is applied, it stimulates muscle fibers and sensory receptors in the muscle and tendon, which facilitates cyclical rapid muscle contraction and relaxation. When the muscle spindle is stimulated, a vibratory-induced inhibition can occur, which is frequency and amplitude-dependent, causing a reduction in muscle activity which may lead to improvements in joint mobility. Consequently, applying FMV to specific muscles increases the elasticity via contraction …
