Aims

This article discusses possible barriers to help-seeking that Indigenous and Black women encountered when seeking help related to experiences of intimate partner violence during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Design

This article is focused on understanding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on populations at highest risk for intimate partner violence in its most severe forms.

Data Sources

Literature sources range from 2010 to 2022. The article is also informed by the experiences of scholars and advocates working with Indigenous and Black women experiencing intimate partner violence in Wisconsin. In our write-up, we draw on Indigenous feminism and Black feminist thought. …

This study describes using social media in recruiting a large and hard-to-reach national sample of family nurse practitioner students in the United States enrolled in their final clinical course and the impact on survey response targets. Social media recruitment was initiated when sample targets were not met using traditional, direct email invitations. A cross-sectional, observational, complex-samples survey design was used to collect data from students enrolled in accredited programs. When inviting participants via emails to schools of nursing and program administrators was only moderately successful, direct recruitment via social media sites was used. Study Objective

The purpose of this quality improvement study was to reduce nonemergent visits to the emergency department attendance within a multistate Veterans Health Affairs network.

Methods

Telephone triage protocols were developed and implemented for registered nurse staff to triage selected calls to a same-day telephonic or video virtual visit with a provider (physician or nurse practitioner). Calls, registered nurse triage dispositions, and provider visit dispositions were tracked for 3 months.

Results

There were 1606 calls referred by registered nurses for provider visits. Of these, 192 were initially triaged as emergency department dispositions. Of these, 57.3% of calls that would …

Obesity is a major health care concern in the United States and is associated with high rates of postoperative complications after spine surgery. Obese patients assert that weight reduction is not possible unless spine surgery first relieves their pain and concomitant immobility. Generally, men in sub-Saharan Africa make reproductive decisions that affect their partners. We examined the predictors of fertility desires among married men across three age cohorts: 20–35 years, 36–50 year, and 51–59 years. Using the 2014 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey dataset, we conducted ANOVA and multivariate binary logistic regressions on 1431 monogamous married men aged 20–59 years. Two indicators of fertility desire are constructed: (i) the comparison of men’s ideal versus women’s ideal family size, and (ii) the desire for more children. The purpose of this study was to determine how students' individual grades in BSN courses associated with their medical surgical, fundamentals, and pharmacology raw HESI scores. The average of three HESI scores were calculated and recursive partitioning and regression trees were used to identify associations between course grades and the composite HESI score. The model results provide insight into assessing student progression and can help in implementing tailored remediation strategies.

Biliary atresia (BA) is a rare congenital liver disease with unknown etiology, and it is the most common indication for liver transplantation in children. As BA infants suffer from intestinal malabsorption and neurodevelopmental deficits, it is necessary to identify optimal medical and nutritional strategies using appropriate neonatal animal models. We aim to determine the feasibility of using newborn piglets with surgically induced cholestasis (bile duct ligation (BDL)) to mimic clinical features of BA. The tumor microenvironment (TME) plays an essential role in malignancy and neurons have emerged as a key component of the TME that promotes tumorigenesis across a host of cancers1,2. Recent studies on glioblastoma (GBM) highlight bi-directional signaling between tumors and neurons that propagates a vicious cycle of proliferation, synaptic integration, and brain hyperactivity3-8; however, the identity of neuronal subtypes and tumor subpopulations driving this phenomenon are incompletely understood. AIMS/HYPOTHESIS: Characterisation of genetic variation that influences the response to glucose-lowering medications is instrumental to precision medicine for treatment of type 2 diabetes. The Study to Understand the Genetics of the Acute Response to Metformin and Glipizide in Humans (SUGAR-MGH) examined the acute response to metformin and glipizide in order to identify new pharmacogenetic associations for the response to common glucose-lowering medications in individuals at risk of type 2 diabetes.

Objectives: This study aimed to define the influence of androgens and diet (tomato and lycopene) on prostatic miRNA expression during early carcinogenesis in the transgenic adenocarcinoma of the mouse prostate (TRAMP) model.

Purpose: COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is a collection of lung diseases that complicates breathing and causes irreversible lung damage. Given that it is a progressive disease, early detection is crucial for managing its symptoms. We recently developed a method for calculating pulmonary blood mass change (PBMC) apparent on paired inhale/exhale non-contrast computed tomography (CT) scans as a quantitative surrogate for lung perfusion. Our long term objective is to develop a PBMC biomarker for predicting COPD progression. Introduction: ALCAPA – ‘Anomalous Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery’, it is an infrequent congenital cardiovascular abnormality distinguished by the ‘left coronary artery’ originating from the ‘pulmonary artery’ in place of its normal origin, the aorta. Failing to treat this critical condition, might result in myocardial ischemia, left ventricular dysfunction, and a risk of sudden heart-related death.

Misophonia is characterized by decreased tolerance of ordinary human-generated trigger sounds and associated visual stimuli (e.g., chewing, sniffing, lip smacking), coupled with intense affective reactions. The disorder often begins during childhood or adolescence and is associated with impairment and distress in numerous life domains. Research has begun to examine the underlying psychological mechanisms of misophonia in adults, but studies in youth are limited. Anxiety disorders are the most common class of psychiatric conditions among children and adolescents. The cognitive behavioral model of childhood anxiety has a strong theoretic and empirical foundation that provides the basis for effective treatment. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), with an emphasis on exposure therapy, is the gold standard treatment for childhood anxiety disorders, with strong empirical support. A case vignette demonstrating CBT for childhood anxiety disorders in practice, as well as recommendations for clinicians, are also provided.
