Enhancing Patient Care: The Power Of Librarian-Mediated Literature Reviews, Heather J. Martin, Carrie Grinstead, Danielle Linden

Publications 2026-present

Background: Our health system library fields thousands of requests for literature searches each year in support of research, policy, evidence-based practice projects, and care for individual patients. With fewer library staff than comparable institutions and an engaged, multidisciplinary clinical workforce, we face ongoing pressures to do more with less and to demonstrate our value.

Case Presentation: A 2021 article in the Journal of Hospital Librarianship offered an existing survey and basic project design that we used to assess our impacts. We adapted, with permission, the survey and methods of “Analysis of a Hospital Librarian Mediated Literature Search Service at a …

Identifying Factors Influencing Occupational Therapy Decision-Making Regarding Telehealth, In-Person, And Hybrid Care Within A Veterans Affairs Healthcare Setting In South Carolina, Christina R. Smith

Senior Theses

Telehealth has become an increasing part of healthcare service delivery, expanding client access to services across disciplines, including occupational therapy. Existing research suggests that telehealth occupational therapy can produce similar outcomes to in-person care in certain populations; however, variability in patient characteristics, technological readiness, intervention demands, and environmental contexts influences its suitability, and limited research examines how practitioners determine the appropriate service delivery model. The purpose of this qualitative study is to explore the factors that influence occupational therapy practitioners within a Veterans Affairs healthcare setting in South Carolina when determining the appropriateness of telehealth, in-person, or hybrid service delivery …

Background: Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumors in the United States, comprising nearly 41% of central nervous system tumors. While the majority are benign, atypical (World Health Organization Grade II) and malignant (Grade III) subtypes are clinically significant due to their aggressive biology, higher recurrence, and increased mortality risk. Despite their burden, national mortality trends and demographic disparities in meningioma-related deaths remain underexplored.

Methods: We conducted a population-based analysis of meningioma-related mortality among U.S. adults aged ≥65 years from 1999 to 2023 using the centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) wide-ranging online data for epidemiologic research (WONDER) …

Copy number variants (CNVs) are key drivers of human diversity and disease risk1. Here we evaluate the role of CNVs across a broad range of human phenotypes and diseases by analysing CNVs from 470,727 UK Biobank whole-genome sequences and conducting a variant- and gene-level phenome-wide association study (PheWAS) with 2,941 plasma protein abundance measurements, 13,336 binary clinical phenotypes and 1,911 quantitative traits. Proteomic analyses validated functional associations of CNVs with nearby genes (cis-protein quantitative trait loci; cis-pQTLs)—with deletions and duplications typically associated with reduced and increased protein levels, respectively—and uncovered previously unknown protein–protein interactions …

Knowledgable Births: Advancing Informed Consent In Maternal Healthcare, Ella A. Forrester Apr 2026

Knowledgable Births: Advancing Informed Consent In Maternal Healthcare, Ella A. Forrester

Senior Theses

Background:

Informed consent is both a legal requirement and an ethical cornerstone of healthcare, ensuring that patients understand and voluntarily agree to medical treatments. However, evidence suggests that the informed consent process is often inadequately implemented in maternal healthcare settings, particularly during childbirth. While giving birth, women retain full decision-making capacity but are not consistently provided with sufficient information or support to exercise this right. Contributing factors include ineffective patient–provider communication, limited health literacy, and insufficient access to culturally responsive educational resources.

Methods:

This study aimed to address gaps in accessible prenatal education by developing an online resource platform, Know …

ZFTA–RELA is the most recurrent genetic alteration seen in paediatric supratentorial ependymoma (EPN) and is sufficient to initiate tumours in mice1. Despite its oncogenic potential, ZFTA–RELA (ZR) is observed nearly exclusively in childhood EPN, with tumours located distinctly in the supratentorial brain of the central nervous system1. We proposed that specific chromatin modules accessible during brain development would render distinct cell lineage programs at direct risk of transformation by ZR. To test this hypothesis, we performed combined single-nucleus assay for transposase-accessible chromatin and RNA (snMultiome) sequencing of the developing mouse forebrain compared with ZR-driven mouse …

Utility Of Diagnostic Arthroscopy Before Medial Patellofemoral Ligament Reconstruction In Pediatric And Adolescent Patients Without Articular Findings On Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Holden Archer, Kaleb Patterson, Jonathan D Schwartzman, Scott D Mckay, Indranil Kushare

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

BACKGROUND: Medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL) reconstruction is frequently used to manage recurrent patellar instability. Diagnostic arthroscopy is commonly performed before MPFL reconstruction to identify, confirm, and address intra-articular pathology. However, when preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) does not demonstrate intra-articular lesions, it is unclear how often diagnostic arthroscopy in pediatric patients alters surgical management.

PURPOSE: To determine the utility of diagnostic arthroscopy in young patients undergoing MPFL reconstruction who had no intra-articular chondral or osteochondral pathology, meniscal tears, or loose bodies identified on preoperative MRI, and to characterize intra-articular pathology detected on arthroscopy but not identified on MRI.

The lymphatic system is a highly branched endothelial tubular network that facilitates the migration of immune cells from the peripheral tissues to lymph nodes (LNs) and other lymphoid organs. Complement factors are essential for innate and adaptive immune functions. Complement anaphylatoxin C5a is crucial in vascular endothelial cell activation and lymphocyte polarization. Understanding the impact of C5a and its cognate receptor C5ar1 signaling on lymphatic function could provide new insights into the mechanisms of immune dysregulation observed in chronic inflammatory diseases. We demonstrate that acute C5a challenge in wildtype C57B6/J mice significantly reduced lymph propulsion compared to their C5ar1-deficient counterparts. …

Objective: Prior research on confessions of physical abuse (PA) has explored mechanisms of injury. Little is known about conditions supporting a confession of abuse or how confessions may influence case outcomes.

Methods: This cross-sectional study of suspected PA in children aged < 10 years at 10 centers participating in CAPNET, a multicenter child PA research network, included children with in-person Child Abuse Pediatrics (CAP) consultations between February 2021 and December 2022 and excluded children without injury. Our focus was a confession of inflicted injury known to the CAP during clinical involvement. We compared child and clinical characteristics, out-of-home (OOH) placements, and arrests between cases with and without confessions. Multivariable models using generalized estimating equations (GEE) produced adjusted predicted probabilities (APP) clustering by CAPNET site.

Results: Confessions were known to CAPs in 115/4297 (2.7%) cases, with significant site variability. In a multivariable GEE model, confessions were more likely in cases with injuries with high specificity for abuse (APP 6.0% vs 1.6%, P < .001), near-fatality (APP 5.6% vs 2.3%, P < .001), and older children (APP 4.8% vs 2.5%, P = .025). OOH placements and arrests were more common in cases with confessions. CAP awareness of confessions, OOH placements, and arrests did not follow racial or ethnic patterns seen in the US child welfare system. Lower socioeconomic status was associated with OOH placements and arrests but not with CAP awareness of confessions.

Conclusions: Our findings highlight differences in case characteristics and outcomes where a confession is known to the CAP and raise questions about …

Myocardial metabolic flexibility is critical to ensuring the heart's capacity to maintain contraction and cellular functions under rapidly evolving environmental conditions. Although it is a tightly regulated process, loss of metabolic flexibility is often regarded as a contributing factor to heart failure. This study aims to determine the effects of the early response transcription factor nuclear receptor subfamily 4 group A member 2 (NR4A2) on cardiac metabolism and the resulting impact on left ventricular function. A multiomics approach combining the analysis of global ventricular gene expression, genome-wide NR4A2 binding, and untargeted metabolomics was used to track the molecular effects of …

A single, recurrent, gain-of-function pathogenic variant in PRKG1 (p.Arg177Gln, also referred to as p.Arg192Gln) causes heritable thoracic aortic disease with a high lifetime risk for aortic dissections that frequently occur before there is enlargement of the proximal thoracic aorta. This report summarizes the clinical manifestations of the PRKG1 pathogenic variant in two unrelated families, including early-onset type A dissection, chronic thoracoabdominal dissection with visceral complications, and elective aortic repair of the proximal aorta with minimal enlargement. In both families, multiple individuals experienced acute dissections at young ages that led to five fatalities. These cases illustrate the early onset of manifestations …

Background: Guidelines recommend ≥2 weeks of antifungal therapy after candidemia clearance and for invasive candidiasis (IC). This post-hoc analysis evaluates Day 7 pooled data from the phase 2 STRIVE and phase 3 ReSTORE trials to explore early antifungal activity.

Methods: Adults with candidemia and/or IC received weekly rezafungin 400/200 mg or daily caspofungin 70/50 mg for ≤4 weeks. Efficacy was evaluated in the modified intent-to-treat population via all-cause mortality (ACM; primary endpoint; 20% noninferiority margin), mycological eradication, and time to negative blood culture (TTNBC) at days 7, 14, and 30 (TTNBC assessed only in patients with candidemia). Day 7 safety …
