Effectiveness Of A Postpartum Breastfeeding Protocol For Avoiding Pregnancy Data, Mary Schneider, Richard Fehring, Thomas Paul Bouchard
Randomized Comparison of Two Internet-Supported Methods of Natural Family Planning
The uses of cervical mucus and basal body temperature as indicators of return to fertility postpartum have resulted in high unintended pregnancy rates. In 2013, a study found that when women used urine hormone signs in a postpartum/breastfeeding protocol this resulted in fewer pregnancies. To improve the original protocol's effectiveness, three revisions were made: (1) women were to increase the number of days tested with the Clearblue Fertility Monitor, (2) an optional second luteinizing hormone test could be done in the evening, and (3) instructions were given to manage the beginning of the fertile window for the first six cycles …

Effects Of Transition From Closed-Book To Open-Book Assessment On Students’ Scores In A Pharmacokinetics Course, Reza Mehvar, Richard Beuttler
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Closed-book summative assessment of student learning, common in pharmacy education, is challenging to administer in a remote setting due to the need for costly and intrusive monitoring technology. Therefore, open-book assessments without monitoring have been considered an alternative in remote settings. The present study investigated the effects of the transition from in-person closed-book to remote open-book format on the students’ scores in different assessment categories in a Pharmacokinetics course. The students’ performances in the transition cohort (Transition, n = 96) during the in-person and remote periods were compared with those of an in-person cohort (Control, n = 85) during the …

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with highly toxic compounds mainly exist in small-sized particles and can induce considerable human health risks. Studies on PM2.5-bound PAHs and their source-specific human health risks still remain scarce. Daily PM2.5 samples (n = 119) were collected every three days from 2016 to 2017 in Taipei city, Taiwan. Fifteen PAHs in PM2.5 were analyzed via gas chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (GC/MS-MS). We utilized a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model, diagnostic ratios, and potential source contribution function (PSCF) to identify the origins of PM2.5-bound PAHs. The annual concentration of total PAHs (TPAH) was 0.79 ± 0.67 ng …

INTRODUCTION: Circulating inflammatory cytokines play critical roles in tumor-associated inflammation and immune responses. Recent data have suggested that several interleukins (ILs) mediate carcinogenesis in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, the predictive and prognostic value of circulating ILs is yet to be validated. Our study aimed to evaluate the association of the serum ILs with overall survival (OS) and clinicopathologic features in a large cohort of HCC patients.
METHODS: We prospectively collected data and serum samples from 767 HCC patients treated at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center between 2001 and 2014, with a median follow-up of 67.4 months (95% …

Data management plans (DMPs) are essential to a research data life cycle. The DMPs should be developed as part of the research programs to be effective. For disease area research, integrating research community-recommended data standards during collection can enhance the likelihood of data reuse. Informatics tools are required as part of DMPs with the aim of data being findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable.
The United States National Institutes of Health supports various disease area research programs and has recently finalized the Data Management and Sharing Policy. The policy highlights the importance of sharing data and metadata, including information on various …

INTRODUCTION: Quantifying e-cigarette use is challenging because of the wide variety of products and the lack of a clear, objective demarcation of a use event. This study aimed to characterize the difference between retrospective and real-time measures of the quantity of e-cigarette use and identify the covariates that may account for discrepancies between the two types of measures.
METHODS: This study analyzed data from 401 college student e-cigarette users in Indiana and Texas who responded to a web survey (retrospective) and 7-day ecological momentary assessments (EMA) (real-time) on their e-cigarette use behavior, dependence symptomatology, e-cigarette product characteristics, and use contexts …

Identifying biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease with a goal of early detection is a fundamental problem in clinical research. Both medical imaging and genetics have contributed informative biomarkers in literature. To further improve the performance, recently, there is an increasing interest in developing analytic approaches that combine data across modalities such as imaging and genetics. However, there are limited methods in literature that are able to systematically combine high-dimensional voxel-level imaging and genetic data for accurate prediction of clinical outcomes of interest. Existing prediction models that integrate imaging and genetic features often use region level imaging summaries, and they typically do …

Clot retraction results from retractions of platelet filopodia and fibrin fibers and requires the functional platelet αIIbβ3 integrin. This assay is widely used to test the functions of platelets and fibrinogen as well as the efficacy of fibrinolysis. Changes in clot retraction have been found in a variety of hemostatic abnormalities and, more recently, in arterial thrombosis. Despite its broad clinical use and low cost, many aspects of clot retraction are poorly understood. In the present study, we performed two clinical standard clot retraction assays using whole-blood and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) samples to determine how clot retraction correlates with platelet …

Leishmania spp. and Trypanosoma cruzi are parasitic kinetoplastids of great medical and epidemiological importance since they are responsible for thousands of deaths and disability-adjusted life-years annually, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Despite efforts to minimize their impact, current prevention measures have failed to fully control their spread. There are still no vaccines available. Taking into account the genetic similarity within the Class Kinetoplastida, we selected CD8+ T cell epitopes preserved among Leishmania spp. and T. cruzi to construct a multivalent and broad-spectrum chimeric polyprotein vaccine. In addition to inducing specific IgG production, immunization with the vaccine was able to …

Introduction: During the preclinical years, students typically do not have extensive exposure to clinical medicine. When they begin their clinical rotations, usually in the third year, the majority of the time is spent on core rotations with limited experience in other fields of medicine. Students then must decide on their careers early in their fourth year. We aimed to analyze how often medical students change their career preferences between the end of their second and their fourth year. Methods: We conducted a retrospective, cohort study using the American Association of Medical Colleges Year 2 Questionnaire (Y2Q) and Graduating Questionnaire (GQ) …

Despite the successes of immunotherapy, melanoma remains one of the deadliest cancers, therefore, the need for innovation remains high. We previously reported anti-melanoma compounds that work by downregulating spliceosomal proteins hnRNPH1 and H2. In a separate study, we reported that these compounds were non-toxic to Balb/C mice at 50 mg/kg suggesting their utility in in vivo studies. In the present study, we aimed to assess the efficacy of these compounds by testing them in A375 cell-line xenograft in nude athymic mice. Animals were randomized into four groups (n = 12/group): 10 mg/kg vemurafenib, and 25 mg/kg 2155-14 and 2155-18 thrice …

Although the right heart catheterization (RHC) was first introduced in 1945, its use in the quantitative hemodynamic assessment of patients has remained of questionable benefit. With recent advances in pharmacotherapies and mechanical support devices, RHC has been increasingly used to assess and help tailor the management of more complex patient scenarios. We present a case series in which the use of the RHC was helpful in making complex medical decisions.

Paragonimiasis is a zoonotic, food-borne trematode infection that affects 21 million people globally. Trematodes interact with their hosts via extracellular vesicles (EV) that carry protein and RNA cargo. We analyzed EV in excretory-secretory products (ESP) released by Paragonimus kellicotti adult worms cultured in vitro (EV ESP) and EV isolated from lung cyst fluid (EV CFP) recovered from infected gerbils. The majority of EV were approximately 30-50 nm in diameter. We identified 548 P. kellicotti-derived proteins in EV ESP by mass spectrometry and 8 proteins in EV CFP of which 7 were also present in EV ESP. No parasite-derived proteins were …
