Exome sequencing (ES) is now a relatively straightforward process to identify causal variants in Mendelian disorders. However, the same is not true for ES in families where the inheritance patterns are less clear, and a complex etiology is suspected. Orofacial clefts (OFCs) are highly heritable birth defects with both Mendelian and complex etiologies. The phenotypic spectrum of OFCs may include overt clefts and several subclinical phenotypes, such as discontinuities in the orbicularis oris muscle (OOM) in the upper lip, velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), microform clefts or bifid uvulas. Regular physical activity is a proven routine for weight management in addressing obesity. Another method that has gained attention for its health benefits is intermittent fasting (IF). Physical and cognitive abilities while on these routines are poorly understood in the obese population. Sixty-five male Sprague Dawley rats at 7 weeks of age were subjected to diet-induced obesity by feeding a high-fat diet (HFD) or a standard diet (SD) for 8 weeks, after which behavioral testing was performed to detect any changes in physical and cognitive abilities. The postpartum period is a critical point when women remain a vulnerable in the hospital setting. This stems from various physical, emotional and psychological changes that women face after childbirth, when patient support and attention is vital. For instance, the postpartum stage poses risk to women for complications, such as postpartum depression (PPD). When left untreated and misdiagnosed, PPD can lead to adverse maternal outcomes, such as: problems with mother-infant bonding, difficulty breastfeeding, and an increased risk for suicide (Mayo Clinic, 2022).

Like speech, signs are composed of discrete, recombinable features called phonemes. Prior work shows that models which can recognize phonemes are better at sign recognition, motivating deeper exploration into strategies for modeling sign language phonemes. In this work, we learn graph convolution networks to recognize the sixteen phoneme “types” found in ASL-LEX 2.0. Specifically, we explore how learning strategies like multi-task and curriculum learning can leverage mutually useful information between phoneme types to facilitate better modeling of sign language phonemes. Results on the Sem-Lex Benchmark show that curriculum learning yields an average accuracy of 87% across all phoneme types, outperforming …

The objective of this study was to assess the effects of CenteringPregnancy (CP) in the Netherlands on different health outcomes. A stepped wedged cluster randomized trial was used, including 2132 women of approximately 12 weeks of gestation, from thirteen primary care midwifery centres in and around Leiden, Netherlands. Data collection was done through self-administered questionnaires. Multilevel intention-to-treat analysis and pro pensity score matching for the entire group and separately for nulliparous- and multiparous women were employed. They are costly for our healthcare system and lead to a sequela of challenges for patients, families and society. These challenges include fear of falling, injury, reduced quality of life, disability and death. Within the primary care setting, a fall risk assessment is required as part of the Welcome to Medicare examination. Primary care providers are reimbursed through the Medical Annual Wellness Visit. This dissertation examined how health researchers and state policymakers can effectively communicate with each other to support the use of evidence-based public health information in the policymaking process. To achieve this, a systematic review, analysis of TX RPC Project data, and semi-structured interviews were conducted among health researchers and policymakers. The systematic review found that email, in-person meetings, and phone calls were the best way to reach policymaking offices at the federal and state levels. When providing policymaking offices with data, health researchers should provide briefs, summaries, fact sheets, or one-pagers to support legislative offices’ need for information. Shorter reports …

The macro button toolbar system was developed to enhance radiologist report composition and improve group productivity in response to a rise in imaging volume and an impending radiologist workforce shortage. This research aims to validate the proposed benefits of the macro button toolbar system using an analysis of a time study and the radiology group’s historical wRVU productivity data. The study found that radiologists using this system achieved significantly higher productivity compared to national averages, with high toolbar users experiencing a 29% increase in wRVU productivity and a 52.6% reduction in report completion time for X-ray exams. The Abortion Rights Of Teens In The Post-Dobbs Era, J. Shoshanna Ehrlich

The article examines the erosion of minors' abortion rights following the Supreme Court's Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health decision, which overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. It argues that the post-Dobbs legal landscape disproportionately harms vulnerable populations, particularly teens, by undermining judicial bypass options and intensifying restrictions on abortion access. The analysis critiques the inconsistent application of legal frameworks, such as the "mature minor" rule and emancipation doctrines, which fail to protect teens' autonomy. The article advocates for recognizing minors as constitutional persons with medical self-consent rights to counter these restrictions.

Background: The pathogenesis of portal vein thrombosis (PVT) in cirrhosis is multifactorial, with altered hemodynamics being proposed as a possible contributor. The present systematic review was conducted to study the role of assessment of portal hemodynamics for the prediction of PVT in patients with cirrhosis. Methods: Three databases (Medline, Embase, and Scopus) were searched from inception to February 2023 for studies comparing portal venous system parameters in patients with cirrhosis developing PVT with those not. Background: The underlying mechanism contributing to cholestatic liver injury remains unclear. The proinflammatory cytokine interleukin-17A (IL-17A) has been implicated in human cholestatic liver injury. However, mechanistic insights on how IL-17A modulates cholestatic liver injury are lacking and require further exploration in preclinical models. Herein, we examined the effects of IL-17A genetic deletion in a mouse model of cholestasis. Methods: Ageand gender-matched littermate WT and Il-17a-/- were fed intermittently on 0.1% 3,5-diethoxycarbonyl-1,4-dihydrocollidine (DDC) diet or control diet (n=10, each) and standard diet for 21 days to induce cholestatic liver injury. STUDY OBJECTIVES: Sleep and mental health are two important factors for a new mother, as adequate sleep and a healthy mind help her prioritize self-care, seek support when needed, and create a nurturing environment for both her and her baby. Among various plausible theories exploring the etiology of sleep disturbances and depression, the concept of inflammation is gaining attention. This study examined the hypothesis that more pro-inflammatory diets during pregnancy are associated with a decrease in sleep quality and duration, abnormal sleep timing and higher Edinburg Postnatal depression score (EPDS) scores 6 months and 12 months post-partum.

Introduction: Thrombin, the enzyme which converts fibrinogen into a fibrin clot, is produced by the prothrombinase complex, composed of factor Xa (FXa) and factor Va (FVa). Down-regulation of this process is critical, as excess thrombin can lead to life-threatening thrombotic events. FXa and FVa are inhibited by the anticoagulants tissue factor pathway inhibitor alpha (TFPIα) and activated protein C (APC), respectively, and their common cofactor protein S (PS). However, prothrombinase is resistant to either of these inhibitory systems in isolation. Antithrombotic therapy is a delicate balance between the benefits of preventing a thrombotic event and the risks of inducing a major bleed. Traditional approaches have included antiplatelet and anticoagulant medications, require careful dosing and monitoring, and all carry some risk of bleeding. In recent years, several new targets have been identified, both in the platelet and coagulation systems, which may mitigate this bleeding risk.
