Culinary Medicine (CM), which combines food, cooking, and the science of medicine1 for the management of chronic disease conditions, is an emerging practice area for health professionals, particularly physicians.2 Culinary skills and food-disease-related knowledge are enhanced by CM training3 ; however, there is much to learn regarding optimal program outcome measures.4 What cannot be gained from a CM program is the comprehensive nutrition knowledge that may be needed to ensure CM prescriptions result in benefits and minimize harm. This may be particularly important for older adults.

Background Cervical cancer is a major health burden and the second most common cancer after breast cancer among women in Kenya. Worldwide cervical cancer constitutes 3.1% of all cancer cases. Mortality rates are greatest among the low-income countries because of lack of awareness, screening and early-detection programs and adequate treatment facilities.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the histopathologic inflammation and fibrosis of orbital adipose tissue in orbital inflammatory disease (OID) specimens.

METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, inflammation, and fibrosis in orbital adipose tissue from patients with thyroid-associated orbitopathy (TAO), granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA), sarcoidosis, nonspecific orbital inflammation (NSOI), and healthy controls were scored by 2 masked ocular pathologists. Background: Uncontrolled hypertension, specifically nocturnal hypertension, increases the risk for significant clinical outcomes. Evidence on the use of nighttime antihypertensives is scant and conflicting. In addition, hydrochlorothiazide continues to be the primary thiazide used despite being the least potent. Objective: The primary purpose of this study was to evaluate instituting nighttime dosing to control hypertension and compare the short-term effectiveness of blood pressure control with indapamide versus hydrochlorothiazide. Investigating the Association between Mast Cell Activation Syndrome and Irritable Bowel Syndrome Introduction Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) involves the inappropriate release of chemical mediators resulting in varied episodic symptoms. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a common functional abdominal disorder where mucosal immune alterations play a key role. Background: Women are more likely than men to be diagnosed with depression and anxiety with rates increasing since the COVID-19 pandemic. This study sought to understand how women's intersecting identities, personal strengths, and COVID-19–related stressors were associated with their anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms early in the pandemic.

Methods: During May–June 2020, American women (N = 398) recruited via MTurk completed an online questionnaire assessing mental health (PTSD, anxiety, and depression), demographic characteristics, personal strengths (coping, hope, social support), and experiences with COVID-19–specific stressors.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the real-world effectiveness and safety of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared intrauterine vacuum-induced-hemorrhage control device for postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) management.

METHODS: Sixteen centers in the United States participated in this observational, postmarket registry medical record review (October 2020 through March 2022). The primary effectiveness outcome was treatment success , defined as bleeding control after insertion with no treatment escalation or bleeding recurrence. Platelets play many roles in the vasculature ensuring proper hemostasis and maintaining integrity. These roles are facilitated, in part, by cargo molecules released from platelet granules via Soluble NSF Attachment Protein Receptor (SNARE) mediated membrane fusion, which is controlled by several protein-protein interactions. Chaperones have been characterized for t-SNAREs (i.e. Munc18b for Syntaxin-11), but none have been clearly identified for v-SNAREs. α- Synuclein has been proposed as a v-SNARE chaperone which may affect SNARE-complex assembly, fusion pore opening, and thus secretion. Incorporating referral incentives in dentistry, like gift cards or raffles, can present ethical and legal issues. The MDA's ethical rule 4.E prohibits rebates or fee splitting, extending to any referral source, including patients. Gift cards may be perceived as rebates. Raffle tickets are less problematic, but only the winner gains something of value. State law (MCL 333.16221) deems fee division unethical. For insurance and dental plan agreements, check for clauses mandating specific fee schedules and discouraging referral fees to ensure compliance. Federal laws might also apply if incentives are used for Medicaid or Medicare patients.

Objectives: The period of entry into university represents one of vulnerability to substance use for university students. The goal of this study is to document the 12-month prevalence of substance use disorders among first year university students in Kenya, and to test whether there is an association between substance use disorders and mental disorders.

Low ocular perfusion pressure (OPP), which depends on the mean arterial pressure (MAP) and intraocular pressure (IOP), is associated with glaucoma. We studied 24-h MAP dysregulations and OPP in relation to the progression of glaucoma damage.

Methods:

We retrospectively analyzed 155 normal-tension glaucoma (NTG) and 110 primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients aged 18 years old followed at the University Hospital Leuven with repeated visual field tests (n = 7000 measures, including both eyes) who underwent 24-h ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. Background: Regulation of mechanistic target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) plays an important role in aging and nutrition. For example, caloric restriction reduces mTORC1 signaling and extends lifespan, whereas nutrient abundance and obesity increase mTORC1 signaling and reduce lifespan. Skeletal muscle-specific knockout (KO) of DEP domain-containing 5 protein (DEPDC5) results in constitutively active mTORC1 signaling, muscle hypertrophy and an increase in mitochondrial respiratory capacity. The metabolic profile of skeletal muscle, in the setting of hyperactive mTORC1 signaling, is not well known.

Replacement therapy for the salivary gland (SG) remains an unmet clinical need. Xerostomia ("dry mouth") due to hyposalivation can result from injury or disease to the SG, such as salivary acinar death caused by radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Currently, only palliative treatments exist for xerostomia, and many patients endure deteriorated oral health and poor quality of life. Here we develop two new social indices: The ADA PARC Absolute Economic Opportunity Index and the ADA PARC Relative Economic Opportunity Index. These indices allow us novel examinations of economic equity between people with and without disabilities within a U.S. State and between people with disabilities in different states using aggregations of multiple component economic indicators. These represent the first efforts to offer U.S. indices of this focus, an important development given the distinct economic needs of people with disabilities and the value in accounting for distinct national policies. Reproducibility, transparency, representation, and privacy underpin the trust on genomics research in general and genome-wide association studies (GWAS) in particular. Concerns about these issues can be mitigated by technologies that address privacy protection, quality control, and verifiability of GWAS. However, many of the existing technological solutions have been developed in isolation and may address one aspect of reproducibility, transparency, representation, and privacy of GWAS while unknowingly impacting other aspects. Neoadjuvant chemoimmunotherapy improves pathologic complete response rate and event-free survival in patients with resectable non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) versus chemotherapy alone. NeoCOAST was the first randomized, multidrug platform trial to examine novel neoadjuvant immuno-oncology combinations for patients with resectable NSCLC, using major pathologic response (MPR) rate as the primary endpoint. Eighty-three patients received a single cycle of treatment: 26 received durvalumab (anti-PD-L1) monotherapy, 21 received durvalumab plus oleclumab (anti-CD73), 20 received durvalumab plus monalizumab (anti-NKG2A), and 16 received durvalumab plus danvatirsen (anti-STAT3 antisense oligonucleotide). The fluctuation of dissolved oxygen is one of the primary cause of disruptions to the consistent operation of partial nitrification, and the level of dissolved oxygen is mainly controlled by the aeration rate. This study investigated the influence of ultrasonic treatment on the stability of partial nitrification of activated sludge under different aeration conditions. After being treated with ultrasound (energy density = 0.20 W·mL−1, treatment time = 10 min), partial nitrification process operated stably for 67 days, with the nitrite accumulation rate above 83.89 %. The effluent contained 42.50 mg·L−1 of nitrite, much higher than the control reactor (0.30 mg·L−1). …

PURPOSE: Lynch syndrome (LS) is a hereditary condition with a high lifetime risk of colorectal and endometrial cancers. Exercise is a non-pharmacologic intervention to reduce cancer risk, though its impact on patients with LS has not been prospectively studied. Here, we evaluated the impact of a 12-month aerobic exercise cycling intervention in the biology of the immune system in LS carriers.

Many tissues are composed of layered structures, and a better understanding of the changes in the layered tissue biomechanics can enable advanced guidance and monitoring of therapy. The advent of elastography using longitudinally propagating shear waves (LSWs) has created the prospect of a high-resolution assessment of depth-dependent tissue elasticity. Laser activation of liquid-to-gas phase transition of dye-loaded perfluorocarbon (PFC) nanodroplets (a.k.a., nanobombs) can produce highly localized LSWs.
