Research has shown an increase of understanding in the areas of reading, writing, and spelling in individuals with learning disabilities. Purpose Statement: Several studies have shown that aerobic exercise can have a positive impact on alleviating symptoms experienced by individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD). Despite this evidence, the potential benefits of exercise for both PD patients and their care partners (PD dyad) remain unexplored. This research project investigates the effectiveness, therapeutic collaborations, and physical outcomes of a virtual reality (VR) tandem cycling program specifically designed for PD dyads.

Background: In South Carolina (SC), 42% of youth are overweight or obese. Two sets of modifiable behaviors contributing to obesity are physical activity (PA) and dietary habits. School-based interventions have successfully improved these behaviors. Background: Extracorporeal life support (ECLS) therapy for refractory postcardiotomy cardiogenic shock (rPCS) is associated with high early mortality rates. This study aimed to identify negative predictors of mid-term survival and to assess health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and recovery of the survivors. Methods: Between 2017 and 2020, 142 consecutive patients received ECLS therapy following cardiac surgery. The median age was 66.0 [57.0–73.0] years, 67.6% were male and the median EuroSCORE II was 10.5% [4.2–21.3]. In 48 patients, HRQoL was examined using the 36-Item Short Form Survey (SF-36) and the modified Rankin-Scale (mRS) at a median follow-up time of 2.2 [1.9–3.2] …

Our interdisciplinary project on coffee and justice considered the impact of local choices on global coffee producers from both science and humanities perspectives. The science focused on further improving the quality of specialty coffee to create a higher demand for these upmarket beans, thereby allowing coffee producers to earn a more livable wage. Three experiments were conducted to test specialty coffee best practices. Custom oligonucleotides (oligos) are widely used reagents in biomedical research. Some common applications of oligos include polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sequencing, hybridization, microarray, and library construction. The reliability of oligos in such applications depends on their purity and specificity. Here, we report that commercially available oligos are frequently contaminated with nonspecific sequences (i.e. other unrelated oligonucleotides). Most of the oligos that we designed to amplify clustered regularly interspersed palindromic repeats (CRISPR) guide sequences contained nonspecific CRISPR guides. The 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline is a mental health-specific emergency line that became nationally available in July of 2022. This resource allows callers in crisis to connect with trained mental health professionals. Cancer cells exhibit heightened secretory states that drive tumor progression. Here, we identified a chromosome 3q amplicon that serves as a platform for secretory regulation in cancer. The 3q amplicon encodes multiple Golgi-resident proteins, including the scaffold Golgi integral membrane protein 4 (GOLIM4) and the ion channel ATPase secretory pathway Ca2+ transporting 1 (ATP2C1). We show that GOLIM4 recruited ATP2C1 and Golgi phosphoprotein 3 (GOLPH3) to coordinate Ca2+ -dependent cargo loading, Golgi membrane bending, and vesicle scission. GOLIM4 depletion disrupted the protein complex, resulting in a secretory blockade that inhibited the progression of 3q-amplified malignancies. In addition to its role …

ABLE Youth is a non-profit organization that uses sports as the motivation for children who use wheelchairs to reach their goals of independence. The two main goals of this project were as follows: One, to facilitate the Music City Wheelchair Basketball Tournament, the largest adaptive athletics event in Tennessee, and Two, to expand the variety of sports offered at the monthly Super Sports Saturday events. To reach national expert recommendations of 6 months of exclusive human milk for infants, a multifactorial and interdisciplinary approach is needed to increase lactation outcomes. Mother's Milk for Michigan Infants (MMMI), a nurse-led research team, developed MyMMMI Data, a bilingual (Spanish and English) encrypted web-based smartphone application. MyMMMI Data provides targeted enhanced lactation education; tracks participant-recorded feeding, pumping, diaper, and weight logs; and links participants to online resources. This study aimed to assess the visual appeal, usability, and helpfulness of MyMMMI Data to increase lactation duration. A convenience sample of 25 English (n=15) and Spanish-speaking (n=10) lactating parents (<12 weeks postpartum) and lactation consultants were recruited to participate in an online focus group and complete a demographic survey. During focus groups, the team used a deliberative discussion approach and collected verbal and non-verbal responses while participants created accounts and interacted with MyMMMI Data. Focus group data was examined using a qualitative thematic analysis. Most participants were lactation providers (n=17, 65%) and college-educated (n=10, 58%) with a bachelor's degree. The themes identified were organization, aesthetics, motivational features, account creation/maintenance, and resources. Participants liked the purpose, design, and logging features. Areas of concern were account creation and the tone and nuance of the Spanish translations. Recommendations such as timers and push notifications were specified. Feedback revealed that MyMMMI Data is appealing, simple to use, engaging, and educational, but creating an account and translation tone needs improving. Participants stated they would continue using or recommend MyMMMI Data. Limitations include self-reported data and participant fidelity. Focus groups helped refine this smartphone application to address technical, functional, and language issues. Application and Spanish-language revisions are underway. Although participants requested timers and push notifications, these features are incompatible with the current application platform.

Background and Purpose

In human airway smooth muscle (hASM) cells, not all receptors stimulating cAMP production elicit the same effects. This can only be explained if cAMP movement throughout the cell is restricted, yet the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) contribute to compartmentation of many cAMP responses, but PDE activity alone is predicted to be insufficient if cAMP is otherwise freely diffusible. We tested the hypothesis that buffering of cAMP by protein kinase A (PKA) associated with A kinase anchoring proteins (AKAPs) slows cAMP diffusion and that this contributes to receptor-mediated, compartmentalized responses.
