Building Trust: The Role Of Place-Based Consciousness In Vaccine Hesitancy, Ramsey W. Ash
Quantitative Social Science Undergraduate Senior Theses
Vaccine hesitancy poses a threat to public health initiatives of the 21st century. Following a stark divide in the rural/urban COVID-19 vaccine uptake and harsh disparities between these areas in COVID-19 moralities and morbidities, further understanding of the drivers of vaccine hesitancy are needed. This study makes use of the framework of place-based consciousness (PBC), pioneered by scholars of rural political science, such as Katherine Cramer, to explore this phenomenon as a mechanism by which to understand vaccine hesitancy. To examine this, an experimental survey was distributed to 300 Americans (150 rural and 150 urban) that inquired about their PBC, …

Journal of the Saudi Heart Association
The implementation of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) in heart failure (HF) has many challenges in real-world clinical practice. The consensus document is written considering the variability of the clinical presentation of HF patients. HF medical therapies need frequent dose adjustment during hospital admission or when patients develop electrolyte imbalance, acute kidney injury, and other acute illnesses. The paper describes clinical scenarios and graphs that will aid the managing physicians in decision-making for HF therapy optimization.

Transport Of The Fluorescent Substrate Asp+ By Organic Cation Transporter-3 In Human Corneal Epithelial Cells, Jeremy Laws
Transport Of The Fluorescent Substrate Asp+ By Organic Cation Transporter-3 In Human Corneal Epithelial Cells, Jeremy Laws
Theses & Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Organic cation transporter-3 (OCT3) is expressed abundantly throughout the body, but little is known about the presence of these transporters within the eye and, more specifically, the cornea epithelium. An extensive library of compounds interacts with OCT3, including the fluorescent molecule ASP+ and metformin. Metformin is an OCT3 substrate and antidiabetic medication that can lower the risk of eye-related diseases like keratopathy and retinopathy linked to hyperglycemia. Utilizing high throughput microplate assays in a human cornea epithelial cell line (HCE-S), the time-dependent saturation of ASP+ uptake and the competition of ASP+ uptake by corticosterone (CORT), a …

Master's Theses
Physical activity plays a crucial role in maintaining overall health and reducing the risk of various chronic diseases. Step counting has emerged as a popular method for assessing physical activity levels, given its simplicity and ease of use. However, accurately measuring step counts in free-living environments presents significant challenges, with most activity trackers exhibiting a percent error above 20%. This study aims to address these challenges by creating a machine learning algorithm that leverages activity labels to improve step count accuracy in real-world conditions. Two approaches to balancing data were used: one employed a simpler oversampling technique, while the other …

Safety Health & Industrial Hygiene
Key Takeaways:
- Risk assessment matrixes provide a measurement-like tool for characterizing hazard risk by accounting for severity and likelihood. The best matrix format depends on the needs of the organization.
- The many differences between risk matrixes are due to seven attributes: fundamental elements, orientation, size, axes scales, row and column header terms, risk indicators, and cell colors.
- This article focuses on the two-factor model of risk as a function of severity and likelihood. It was developed with the aim of sharing with the occupational safety community an appreciation for risk assessment matrixes beyond what is typically found …

Colorectal cancer patient survival rate has increased over the past decade due to improved screening and treatment options. The clinically relevant FOLFOX (5-fluorouracil [5-FU], oxaliplatin, leucovorin) chemotherapy regimen is a mainstay treatment option, despite the development of severe side-effects that can occur acutely or develop as a late effect after treatment cessation. Cancer and chemotherapy can promote systemic metabolic dysfunction; consequently, patients will likely experience debilitating weakness and fatigue, and these symptoms are often accompanied by excessive fat and muscle loss. Although studies have established chemotherapy effects on the tumor, few have investigated mechanisms underlying the metabolic complications associated with …
Graphic Medicine As Library Outreach, Chanda Briggs
Graphic Medicine As Library Outreach, Chanda Briggs
Gleeson Library Faculty and Staff Research and Scholarship
One of the most compelling aspects of graphic novels is the ability to connect to the emotions of the reader through visual storytelling. Understanding the challenges another person faces or realizing that one’s own challenges are not unique can boost a reader’s empathy as well as their sense of belonging.
The low-lift-high-impact nature of graphic medicine is perfect for awareness campaigns as well as critical scholarship. It makes praxis practical and disarms a reader’s defenses to experience the vulnerability of being fully human. Graphic novels meet students where they are. The high circulation statistics speak for themselves and through graphic …
