Assessing Dental Hygiene Students’ Perspectives: A Survey Of Curriculum Adequacy For Interdisciplinary Settings In U.S. Dental Hygiene Programs, Brittany Elaine Tripp
Dental Hygiene ETDs
This study investigated whether dental hygiene programs implement interdisciplinary care into their curriculum and assessed student preparedness for working in interdisciplinary settings. The study also aimed to identify student preferences for various interdisciplinary care settings. A survey was developed and distributed via email to program directors of accredited dental hygiene programs across the United States. Those programs directors were asked to forward the survey to currently enrolled final-year students. Out of eighty-two responses received, 16 were excluded because those respondents were not final-year dental hygiene students. Sixty-six participants were considered eligible for the survey (n=66). The results indicate that most …

The Potential Anti-Arrhythmic Effect Of Sglt2 Inhibitors, Hong-Yi Duan, Hector Barajas-Martinez, Charles Antzelevitch, Dan Hu
Department of Medicine Faculty Papers
Sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) were initially recommended as oral anti-diabetic drugs to treat type 2 diabetes (T2D), by inhibiting SGLT2 in proximal tubule and reduce renal reabsorption of sodium and glucose. While many clinical trials demonstrated the tremendous potential of SGLT2i for cardiovascular diseases. 2022 AHA/ACC/HFSA guideline first emphasized that SGLT2i were the only drug class that can cover the entire management of heart failure (HF) from prevention to treatment. Subsequently, the antiarrhythmic properties of SGLT2i have also attracted attention. Although there are currently no prospective studies specifically on the anti-arrhythmic effects of SGLT2i. We provide clues from …

The COVID-19 pandemic reminded us of the urgent need for new antivirals to control emerging infectious diseases and potential future pandemics. Immunotherapy has revolutionized oncology and could complement the use of antivirals, but its application to infectious diseases remains largely unexplored. Nucleoside analogs are a class of agents widely used as antiviral and anti-neoplastic drugs. Their antiviral activity is generally based on interference with viral nucleic acid replication or transcription. Based on our previous work and computer modeling, we hypothesize that antiviral adenosine analogs, like remdesivir, have previously unrecognized immunomodulatory properties which contribute to their therapeutic activity. In the case …

Gastric heterotopia (GH) is a rare cause of gastrointestinal bleeding. GH of the small bowel is rare, and the duodenum is more commonly involved than the jejunum. Here, we present five cases of GH involving the duodenum and jejunum, with presentations including gastrointestinal bleeding, symptomatic anemia, and no symptoms. A 63-year-old man presented with melenic stools but could not identify an obvious bleeding source during endoscopy. He was ultimately diagnosed with jejunal GH. A 70-year-old woman with melena and severe anemia had a duodenal bulb mass detected during endoscopy, which was histopathologically diagnosed as GH. A 54-year-old woman experienced nausea, …
The Role Of Sexual Network Core Groups In Disease Epidemics, Jason Janeaux
The Role Of Sexual Network Core Groups In Disease Epidemics, Jason Janeaux
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) remain an economic and social burden, non-discriminately affecting sexually active individuals worldwide. The unique transmission of STIs is dependent upon host and pathogen life histories, as well as the underlying network structure of the host population. Within a population there is a group of individuals, the core group, that maintains STI presence and helps sustain ongoing transmission both within the core group and in the surrounding population. While the presence of these core groups is well documented, the criteria for inclusion into a sexual core group is not. In this dissertation, I explore common factors that …
Developing Public-Private R&D Consortia To Accelerate Alzheimer’S Disease Drug Development, Joel West, Paul Olk
Developing Public-Private R&D Consortia To Accelerate Alzheimer’S Disease Drug Development, Joel West, Paul Olk
Management: Faculty Scholarship
Efforts to accelerate Alzheimer's disease (AD) drug development have been spurred on by the creation of open science, public-private R&D consortia. An R&D consortium provides an improved structure for generating and disseminating AD knowledge across a range of organizations while also aligning their interests. Drawing from archival and interview data collected on 46 public-private R&D consortia focused wholly or in part on AD, we uncover two important innovations: the creation of novel consortium types that facilitate coordination beyond the individual consortium, and the practice of organizations joining multiple consortia. Collectively these innovations provide member organizations with different pathways for advancing …

Neuroblastoma (NB) is a cancer of the peripheral nervous system found in children under 15 years of age. It is the most frequently diagnosed cancer during infancy, accounting for ~12% of all cancer-related deaths in children. Leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein-coupled receptor 5 (LGR5) is a membrane receptor that is associated with the primary tumor formation and metastasis of cancers in the gastrointestinal system. Remarkably, high levels of LGR5 are found in NB tumor cells, and high LGR5 expression is strongly correlated with poor survival. Antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs) are monoclonal antibodies that are covalently linked to cell-killing cytotoxins to deliver the payloads …

In recent years, using pharmacological ascorbic acid has emerged as a promising therapeutic approach in cancer treatment, owing to its capacity to induce extracellular hydrogen peroxide (H2O 2) production in solid tumors. The H2 O 2 is then converted into cytotoxic hydroxyl free radicals (HO•) by redox-active Fe2+ inside cells. However, the high dosage of ascorbic acid required for efficacy is hampered by adverse effects such as kidney stone formation. In a recent study, we demonstrated the efficient catalytic conver- sion of H2 O2 to HO• by wüstite (Fe 1−xO) nanoparticles (WNPs) through a heterogenous Fenton reaction. Here, we explore …

Although extensively studied in cutaneous epithelial neoplasms, the TRPS1 immunoreactivity in cutaneous mesenchymal neoplasms and tumors of uncertain differentiation (CMNTUDs), such as atypical fibroxanthoma (AFX), remains largely unexplored. We assessed TRPS1 immunoreactivity in 135 CMNTUDs, comprising 46 fibrohistiocytic/fibroblastic tumors, 28 vascular tumors, 24 peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs), 21 tumors of uncertain differentiation, and 16 smooth muscle tumors. Additionally, we included selected cases of melanoma with spindled cell morphology or desmoplastic features (n = 9) and sarcomatoid squamous cell carcinoma (SSCC) (n = 5) to compare TRPS1 expression patterns with those of AFX. TRPS1 expression was prevalent in dermatofibromas (24/24), …

Stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) and hypofractionation using pencil-beam scanning (PBS) proton therapy (PBSPT) is an attractive option for thoracic malignancies. Combining the advantages of target coverage conformity and critical organ sparing from both PBSPT and SBRT, this new delivery technique has great potential to improve the therapeutic ratio, particularly for tumors near critical organs. Safe and effective implementation of PBSPT SBRT/hypofractionation to treat thoracic malignancies is more challenging than the conventionally fractionated PBSPT because of concerns of amplified uncertainties at the larger dose per fraction. The NRG Oncology and Particle Therapy Cooperative Group Thoracic Subcommittee surveyed proton centers in …

Background: Individuals with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) show persistent avoidance behaviors, often in the absence of actual threat. Quality-of-life costs and heterogeneity support the need for novel brain-behavior intervention targets. Informed by mechanistic and anatomical studies of persistent avoidance in rodents and nonhuman primates, our goal was to test whether connections within a hypothesized persistent avoidance-related network predicted OCD-related harm avoidance (HA), a trait measure of persistent avoidance. We hypothesized that 1) HA, not an OCD diagnosis, would be associated with altered endogenous connectivity in at least one connection in the network; 2) HA-specific findings would be robust to comorbid symptoms; …

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) comprises an inflammation-based condition with a clinical phenotype that is mainly reliant on the occurrence of rheumatoid factor and anti-citrullinated protein antibodies. Literature indicates that seronegativity might be accompanied by higher severity of clinical symptoms, while higher disease activity, based on the recent classification criteria should also be associated with seronegativity. Aim: This investigation targets the identification of more efficient immune markers of RA seropositivity as well as examining the possibility that the latter is associated with lower severity. Methods: Serum samples from 128 RA patients, 106 seropositive and 22 seronegative, were analyzed using ELISA to …

Structural neuroimaging data have been used to compute an estimate of the biological age of the brain (brain‐age) which has been associated with other biologically and behaviorally meaningful measures of brain development and aging. The ongoing research interest in brain‐age has highlighted the need for robust and publicly available brain‐age models pre‐trained on data from large samples of healthy individuals. To address this need we have previously released a developmental brain‐age model. Here we expand this work to develop, empirically validate, and disseminate a pre‐trained brain‐age model to cover most of the human lifespan. To achieve this, we selected the …

In this article, we develop an analytical approach for estimating brain connectivity networks that accounts for subject heterogeneity. More specifically, we consider a novel extension of a multi-subject Bayesian vector autoregressive model that estimates group-specific directed brain connectivity networks and accounts for the effects of covariates on the network edges. We adopt a flexible approach, allowing for (possibly) nonlinear effects of the covariates on edge strength via a novel Bayesian nonparametric prior that employs a weighted mixture of Gaussian processes. For posterior inference, we achieve computational scalability by implementing a variational Bayes scheme. Our approach enables simultaneous estimation of group-specific …

Purpose: We aimed to describe RAS mutations in gynecologic cancers as they relate to clinicopathologic and genomic features, survival, and therapeutic implications.
Experimental design: Gynecologic cancers with available somatic molecular profiling data at our institution between February 2010 and August 2022 were included and grouped by RAS mutation status. Overall survival was estimated by the Kaplan-Meier method, and multivariable analysis was performed using the Cox proportional hazard model.
Results: Of 3,328 gynecologic cancers, 523 (15.7%) showed any RAS mutation. Patients with RAS-mutated tumors were younger (57 vs. 60 years nonmutated), had a higher prevalence of endometriosis (27.3% vs. 16.9%), and …

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is a rare, usually slow-growing yet aggressive head and neck malignancy. Despite its clinical significance, our understanding of the cellular evolution and microenvironment in ACC remains limited. We investigated the intratumoral microbiomes of 50 ACC tumor tissues and 33 adjacent normal tissues using 16S rRNA gene sequencing. This allowed us to characterize the bacterial communities within the ACC and explore potential associations between the bacterial community structure, patient clinical characteristics, and tumor molecular features obtained through RNA sequencing. The bacterial composition in the ACC was significantly different from that in adjacent normal salivary tissue, and the …

Examining The Effects Of An Isbarr Educational Intervention On Self-Efficacy Of Senior-Level Nursing Students Within A Transition To Practice Course: A Quasi-Experimental Study, Stacy Nicole Taylor
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of an introduction, situation, background, assessment, requests/recommendations, and repeatback/readback (ISBARR) educational intervention on self-efficacy of senior-level nursing students' within a Transition to Practice course at one Christian university in the southeast United States. The theoretical framework utilized in this study was Bandura's theory of self-efficacy. This study was a quasi-experimental design with a control and intervention group. The control group was in the Fall 2023 semester, and the intervention group was in the Spring 2024 semester. Each participant completed a pre-test and post-test, which was the New Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale. …

It is essential to look at the entire picture to ensure patient care is offered in the highest quality manner possible. One must look at patient satisfaction, quality outcomes, and job satisfaction experienced by the nursing staff providing care to accomplish this goal. Research has shown that nurse burnout has increased exponentially as of late. Some blame the COVID-19 pandemic; others look at the generation of nurses graduating from nursing school and starting in the field, comparing the baby boomer nurse to the Gen Z nurse. Many factors are involved, and with the recent addition of paying particular attention to …
Provider Implementation Of Probiotics As An Adjuvant Treatment Modality For Patients With Anxiety And Or Depression In A Primary Care Setting, Sarah Dedmon
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The prevalence of anxiety and depression among Americans is growing rapidly. Patients are seeking out traditional treatments as offered by their primary care providers, but also frequently look toward integrative or complementary methods of managing their symptoms. The use of dietary supplements is at an all-time high, yet the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not regulate these substances for potency and purity or evaluate them using quality standards as it does pharmaceuticals. Most providers lack education regarding the physiological interaction their patients may experience when using these substances and are naïve to their place in primary care medicine. The …

A History Of The Development Of Alternatives To Animals In Research And Testing, John Parascandola
New Directions in the Human-Animal Bond
Growing public interest in animal welfare issues in recent decades has prompted increased attention to the efforts to develop alternative, nonanimal methods for use in biomedical research and product testing. In A History of the Development of Alternatives to Animals in Research and Testing, the first book-length study of the subject, John Parascandola traces the history of the concept of alternatives to the use of animals in research and testing in Britain and the United States from its beginnings until it had become firmly established in the scientific and animal protection communities by the end of the 1980s. This …

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a myeloid neoplastic disorder characterized by lesions with CD1a-positive/Langerin (CD207)-positive histiocytes and inflammatory infiltrate that can cause local tissue damage and systemic inflammation. Clinical presentations range from single lesions with minimal impact to life-threatening disseminated disease. Therapy for systemic LCH has been established through serial trials empirically testing different chemotherapy agents and durations of therapy. However, fewer than 50% of patients who have disseminated disease are cured with the current standard-of-care vinblastine/prednisone/(mercaptopurine), and treatment failure is associated with long-term morbidity, including the risk of LCH-associated neurodegeneration. Historically, the nature of LCH-whether a reactive condition versus …
