2020-Current year OA Pubs

Cisplatin is a widely used anticancer drug with notable side effects including ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity. Macrophages, the major resident immune cells in the cochlea and kidney, are important drivers of both inflammatory and tissue repair responses. To investigate the roles of macrophages in cisplatin-induced toxicities, we used PLX3397, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration-approved inhibitor of the colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor, to eliminate tissue-resident macrophages. Mice treated with cisplatin alone had considerable hearing loss (ototoxicity) and kidney injury (nephrotoxicity). Macrophage ablation resulted in significantly reduced hearing loss and had greater outer hair cell survival. Macrophage ablation also protected against cisplatin-induced …

Penetrating Posterior Urethral Injuries: Case Report And Management Strategies, Seyed Sajjad Tabei, Brandon Lippold, Wesley Baas, Gregory Murphy

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Penetrating posterior urethral trauma from gunshot wounds (GSW) is rare and requires prompt treatment to minimize complications. Data regarding the management of such cases is scarce in the literature and poorly addressed in the guidelines. Different management approaches exist, including urinary diversion with immediate versus delayed urethroplasty/fistula repair. We present our case series to add to our experience to the literature. Three patients aged 18-44 presented with ballistic posterior urethra injuries from GSW. Initial management involved urethral catheter placement, with one patient requiring operative placement of urethral and suprapubic catheters (SPTs). Complications included recurrent membranous stricture, urinary retention, rectourethral fistula, …

In Silico Analysis Of The Rop29 Protein As A Vaccine Candidate Against Toxoplasma Gondii, Amir Karimipour-Saryazdi, Fatemeh Ghaffarifar, Abdolhossein Dalimi, Masoud Foroutan, John Horton, Javid Sadraei

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The progression of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) invasion is aided by rhoptry proteins (ROPs), which are also crucial for the parasite's survival in host cells. In this study, in silico analysis was performed to examine the various aspects of the ROP29 protein, such as physicochemical properties, potential T- and B-cell epitopes, and other significant features. The research revealed that there were 55 possible sites for posttranslational modification in the ROP29 protein. The secondary structure of the ROP29 protein consists of a random coil, an alpha-helix, and an extended strand, which account for 49.69%, 36.81%, and 13.50%, respectively. Moreover, …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

In addition to focal lesions, diffusely abnormal white matter (DAWM) is seen on brain MRI of multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and may represent early or distinct disease processes. The role of MRI-observed DAWM is understudied due to a lack of automated assessment methods. Supervised deep learning (DL) methods are highly capable in this domain, but require large sets of labeled data. To overcome this challenge, a DL-based network (DAWM-Net) was trained using semi-supervised learning on a limited set of labeled data for segmentation of DAWM, focal lesions, and normal-appearing brain tissues on multiparametric MRI. DAWM-Net segmentation performance was compared to …

The Design And Impact Of Interactive Online Modules For Dental Faculty Calibration, Meixun Zheng, Debra Woo, Kim Benton

Pacific Faculty Work

The diverse backgrounds of health professions faculty often result in inconsistent teaching, clinical techniques, and feedback for students. Faculty calibration is essential for uniform, high-quality instruction. However, scheduling training sessions is challenging due to faculty availability. This study introduces a self-paced, interactive online approach to dental faculty calibration. Four self-paced online modules were developed using an interactive cloud-based platform. A variety of learning activities were interspersed throughout the module to promote active learning. A survey captured faculty’s perception of the online format. ANOVA analyses examined differences in perceived effectiveness of the online format between full-time, part-time, and adjunct faculty. The …

The aim of this in vivo study was to compare total protein present in the salivary films (F) and acquired enamel pellicle (AEP) on eroded and non-eroded surfaces in patients suffering from GORD symptoms with and without GORD diagnosis (GORD, No-GORD). Thirty-nine patients suffering from GORD symptoms and erosive tooth wear on lower first molars and an unaffected posterior occlusal surface in the same quadrant were recruited from Guy’s hospital, London. Salivary film and AEP were collected from the eroded and uneroded occlusal surfaces, using 0.5% sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS)-soaked filter papers. Total protein concentration was analysed using bicinchoninic acid …

A Retrospective Quantitative Comparison Of Auto-Planning Vs. Manual-Planning For Large Breast Patients, Olivia R. Smiley Jul 2024

A Retrospective Quantitative Comparison Of Auto-Planning Vs. Manual-Planning For Large Breast Patients, Olivia R. Smiley

Masters Projects

Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in the United States, with many patients undergoing whole breast irradiation (WBI) following lumpectomy. Dosimetrists face challenges in planning WBI for patients with large breasts due to issues related to hotspots, dose uniformity, and extended planning times. Auto-planning tools like EZFluence, which use artificial intelligence, offer potential improvements in planning efficiency and dose distribution. This retrospective quantitative study compares auto-planning using EZFluence with manual planning for 10 large breast patients, aiming to reduce hotspots, achieve a more homogeneous dose, minimize doses to organs at risk (OARs), reduce monitor units (MUs), and …
