Amyloidosis is a rare systemic infiltrative disease, with a prevalence estimated to be 6-10 cases per million person-years. It involves the extracellular deposition of beta-sheet fibrillar protein and can manifest in any organ system in the body. Diagnosis of gastrointestinal involvement of amyloidosis can be difficult, given its nonspecific symptoms including abdominal pain, nausea, dysphagia, and diarrhea.

Left ventricular thrombus (LVT) has been associated with an increased risk of cardioembolic stroke. However, it has not been established if coronary angiography (CAG) or percutaneous intervention (PCI) would enhance that risk. This study aims to determine the risk of cardioembolic stroke among patients with LVT who underwent CAG or PCI.

Dual-task exercise has been shown to be an effective intervention to improve patient functional outcomes and decrease falls. However, little is known about whether physical therapists are prescribing dual task exercises during their sessions, or at what intensity. The objective of this research was to analyze differences and similarities of observed balance exercise practice patterns and reported practice and decision-making among physical therapists. We analyzed both quantitative and qualitative data from two separate studies and extracted data regarding dual-task balance exercises. AASLD and EASL recommend biennial HCC screening for Child-Pugh A and B, but not C. We report a 43-year-old female with alcohol related hepatitis and cirrhosis. Her Fibro test score improved from F4 in 2021 to F2 in 2023 with strict alcohol abstinence. AASLD guidelines for HCC screening in such cases remain unclear.

Thyrotoxicosis is a systemic condition caused by the effects of elevated levels of thyroid hormones. The cardiovascular manifestations of thyrotoxicosis range from sinus tachycardia and atrial fibrillation to heart failure. The incidence of malignant arrhythmias and cardiac arrest associated with thyrotoxicosis is not well known, and much of the current literature regarding this is limited to case reports. This study conducts a systematic review of the literature to identify patient demographics and outcomes where thyrotoxicosis manifests as cardiac arrest.

Presentation at the 2025 CT Nursing Research Alliance Conference

Preceptor training is crucial for the development of nurse preceptors. An interactive in-person preceptor class was developed, incorporating learning strategies such as gaming and role play. After implementation of the class, results showed an increase in confidence among nurse preceptors and satisfaction with learning through various teaching methods.

Alcohol-associated hepatitis (AAH) is a severe liver condition often necessitating hospitalization and has a one-year mortality of 40%. The increasing prevalence of obesity has led to a rise in bariatric surgery (BS), which can alter the outcomes of various comorbid conditions. There are some concerns about possible increased risk and severity of alcohol related disorders in patients with a history of BS due to alteration in alcohol metabolism after surgery.

A Quality Improvement Project To Address Academic Dishonesty And Clinical Misconduct Perceptions Among Undergraduate Nursing Students, Angela D. Phillips

Background/Context:

Seventy-two percent of undergraduate nursing students engage in academic dishonesty, increasing the likelihood of clinical misconduct. Clinical misconduct may compromise patient care. Student perceptions of dishonest behaviors may influence their actions in both academic and clinical environments.

Problem/Purpose:

This quality improvement project evaluated student perceptions of dishonest behaviors before and after watching an educational video created to increase awareness of academic dishonesty.

Outcomes/Results:

Fifty-seven students completed The Nursing Student Perceptions of Dishonesty Scale before and after implementation of an educational intervention. Students perceived behaviors as more dishonest, evidenced by an increase of subscale mean scores ranging from 0.01-1.11.

Background: Artificial Intelligence (AI), particularly public models like ChatGPT, has revolutionized the generation of human-like thought processes and text. Across healthcare, the integration of AI in decision-making processes is increasingly pervasive. However, the application of AI in ethical decision-making remains relatively unexplored.

Methods: Ethics consultation notes from a tertiary academic medical center were de-identified. Hepatic hydrothorax (HH) is a complication of end-stage liver disease involving the accumulation of pleural fluid in patients with cirrhosis, in the absence of other cardiopulmonary disease. HH occurs in 10% of patients with decompensated cirrhosis, conferring a 5-fold increased risk of mortality.¹ Alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and metabolic dysfunction associated steatohepatitis (MASH), which accounts for 80% of liver cirrhosis in the US are known risk factors for HH. ²

This study investigates the meta-issues surrounding social media, which, while theoretically designed to enhance social interactions and improve our social lives by facilitating the sharing of personal experiences and life events, often results in adverse psychological impacts. Our investigation reveals a paradoxical outcome: rather than fostering closer relationships and improving social lives, the algorithms and structures that underlie social media platforms inadvertently contribute to a profound psychological impact on individuals, influencing them in unforeseen ways. Advances In Biomedical Research And Treatments: What Is Acceptable?, Michael L. Clancy, Khalid M. Iskandarani, Mitchell C. Mccrea

This study investigated the technology acceptance (TA) of twenty-first century biomedical treatments by adults in the United States. A new TA instrument was created, using five distinct levels: (1) Healing and Prevention, (2) Replacement Organs, (3) Enhancements-Medical, (4) Enhancements-Discretionary, and (5) Transhumans. An on-line survey produced 353 usable responses, which showed distinct patterns for each of five biomedical treatment levels. There was clear support for Levels 1–3, but very strong opposition to Levels 4–5. The TA finding draws the line between which human interventions are acceptable versus others that should be prohibited through public policies and medical guidelines.
