Does Lower Body Negative Pressure Have A Differential Effect On Blood Pressure And Blood Flow During Exercise In Women?, Jacob B. Sievers, Youanaa A. Gendy, Yusuf I. Rizk, Daisy Hernandez Valadez, Areum K. Jensen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
In response to central hypovolemia, triggered by lower body negative pressure (LBNP), women appeared to have lower tolerance compared to men. In addition, women exhibit blunted pressor responses to exercise compared to men, while cardiac output is increased in a similar fashion. Nonetheless, redistribution of blood flow from central to contracting muscles is required to meet higher metabolic demands during exercise in both men and women. Thus, we thought to investigate the differential effect of LBNP during exercise in men and women. PURPOSE: To determine the role of LBNP on redistributing blood flow from central to contracting muscles during moderate …

Reduced Exertion High Intensity Interval Training (Rehit) On The Rowing Ergometer Elicits Lower Blood Lactate Accumulation And Higher Enjoyment And Affective Valence Versus Cycle Ergometry, Todd Anthony Astorino Ph.D, Rasmus Dahl Clausen
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Reduced exertion high intensity interval training (REHIT) is an extremely time-efficient version of sprint interval training requiring two to three 20 s “all-out” sprints within a 10 min exercise session. Findings from laboratories in the UK (Metcalfe et al. 2012) and Canada (Gillen et al. 2016) show significant increases in VO2max, glycemic control, and body composition in inactive adults completing 6 - 12 wk of cycling based REHIT. A prior study (Astorino et al. 2020) in 85 adults having diverse VO2max values shows positive affective valence despite substantial blood lactate (BLa) accumulation. Whether REHIT can be …

Comparing Body Composition Measures In Us Army Soldiers, Kishani Kirubaharan-Smith, James R. Bagley, Kent A. Lorenz, Maria J. Veri
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
The United States (US) Army currently uses circumference measurements (with body mass index, BMI) to estimate body fat (BF) composition in soldiers. While this current system is easy to administer, it has been shown to have poor validity compared to other modern body composition assessment techniques, such as air displacement plethysmography (BodPod). Specifically, circumference/BMI measures do not account for different body types, especially among female soldiers. PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare 1) body composition measures in US Army Soldiers (BF% via circumferences vs BodPod) and 2) differences in BF% between males and females. We hypothesized there would be significant …

Anti-Cachexia Effect Of Polymorphonuclear Myeloid-Derived Suppressor Cell Depletion Therapy Is Not Present In Tumor-Bearing Mice Lacking T And B Cells, Hailey K. Gorman, Jonathan Specht, Michael Deyhle
International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Polymorphonuclear (PMN) Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), are associated with poor cancer prognosis, partly due to their immunosuppressive effects on anti-cancer immunity. Cancer cachexia, characterized by debilitating skeletal muscle wasting, further reduces patient survival. Previously, antibody-mediated (anti-Ly6G) depletion of PMN-MDSCs attenuated skeletal muscle loss in mouse model of cancer cachexia. The mechanism by which PMN-MDSCs contribute to cachexia is unclear. Given the role that PMN-MDSCs play in supporting cancer disease progression depends on inhibiting anti-cancer adaptive immunity, we tested if the beneficial effects of PMN-MDSCs depletion on cachexia depend on the presence of adaptive immune cells. PURPOSE: We hypothesize that the …

International Journal of Exercise Science: Conference Proceedings
Tarnopolsky et al. (1990) showed significantly higher fat oxidation (FOx) in women versus men during endurance exercise, likely due to their higher concentrations of estrogen and type I muscle fibers. Prior studies support this stance (Venables et al. 2000), yet Wallis et al. (2006) showed no effect of sex on the metabolic response to exercise. PURPOSE: To compare substrate metabolism between men and women during submaximal exercise prescribed using metabolic (percent ventilatory threshold, %VT) and relative (percent maximal heart rate, %HRmax) intensities. METHODS: Healthy, non-obese men (n = 23) and women (n = 13) (age, % fat, and VO2 …

Impact Of Multifactorial Interventions With Medication And Lifestyle Optimization On Patients With Type 2 Diabetes: A Randomised Controlled Trial, Marwan M. El Deyarbi
Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses
The incidence of diabetes is increasing worldwide, consequently increasing mortality rates due to complications such as diabetic kidney disease. Clinical evidence on the protective effect of balanced diet, exercise and medication adherence with glucose-lowering intensification therapies on the progression of diabetes is insufficient, and interventions that are most effective in slowing cardiorenal metabolic complications in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), especially in the UAE population diabetes remain to be elucidated. Several studies have shown that patient-related factors and limited medication adherence in patients with chronic diseases, are associated with poor clinical outcomes, long-term complications, and increased overall disease …

Traditional cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs prioritize aerobic exercise conditioning with less emphasis on FR screening and prevention with related individualized PF training. PURPOSE: This study evaluated the prevalence of self-reported FR among patients enrolled in an early outpatient CR program. METHODS: Fifty-one adults (80% male; age 74.9 ± 6.7 years) agreed to complete the screening portion of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Stop Elderly Accidents, Deaths, and Injuries (STEADI) tool kit, which consisted of 12 …

Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and inflammatory stress responses contribute to islet dysfunction in type 2 diabetes (T2D). Comprehensive genomic understanding of these human islet stress responses and whether T2D-associated genetic variants modulate them is lacking. Here, comparative transcriptome and epigenome analyses of human islets exposed ex vivo to these stressors revealed 30% of expressed genes and 14% of islet cis-regulatory elements (CREs) as stress responsive, modulated largely in an ER- or cytokine-specific fashion. T2D variants overlapped 86 stress-responsive CREs, including 21 induced by ER stress. We linked the rs6917676-T T2D risk allele to increased islet ER-stress-responsive CRE accessibility and allele-specific β …

BACKGROUND: Although the position of a pediatric cardiology chief is often seen as the apex of one's academic career, its roles, responsibilities, and qualifications are not well defined in the literature. This study was done to gain further insight of the role and attributes of a pediatric cardiology chief by surveying those who are currently serving the position across North American centers.
METHODS AND RESULTS: This was a mixed-methods study with a survey given to North American pediatric cardiology chiefs at programs with fellowship training programs. The survey was a semistructured questionnaire that was independently reviewed by 3 cardiologists. Smaller …

Background: Low birthweight (LBW) is one of the leading causes of neonatal mortality in the United States (US), and also is a major causative factor of short- and long-term adverse health effects in newborns. To prevent adverse birth outcomes, it is critical to precisely predict and identify which mothers are at high risk of bearing LBW babies in the early stage of their pregnancy. Previous studies proposed various LBW prediction models from different ML algorithms primarily on small datasets. However, their model performance is significantly limited by data access barriers and data quality issues with one major technical challenge of …
The Association Of Individual Characteristics, Treatment Type, Treatment Satisfaction, Symptoms Of Pain And Fatigue With Health-Related Quality Of Life Among Adults With Gaucher Disease Type 1, Shauna L. Mangum
Nursing ETDs
People with rare disease have lower health-related quality of life (HRQoL) than the general population. Gaucher disease type 1 (GD1) is a rare, autosomal recessive, lysosomal storage disorder that affects multiple bodily systems. HRQoL improved with enzyme replacement and/or substrate reduction therapies, however, little is known about specific variables associated with HRQoL in GD1. This study explored associations between individual characteristics (gender, race, ethnicity, age, and genotype), treatment variables (treatment type, length of time on treatment, and treatment satisfaction) and symptoms of fatigue and pain with HRQoL among 97 adults with GD1. No significant associations were found among individual characteristics …

The paper presents the results of an indirect personality assessment of U.S. vice president Kamala Harris, Democratic presidential nominee in the 2024 U.S. presidential election, from the conceptual perspective of personologist Theodore Millon.
Psychodiagnostically relevant data about Harris were collected from biographical sources and media reports and synthesized into a personality profile using the Millon Inventory of Diagnostic Criteria (MIDC), which yields 34 normal and maladaptive personality classifications congruent with DSM-III-R, DSM-IV, and DSM-5-TR.
The personality profile yielded by the MIDC was analyzed in accordance with interpretive guidelines provided in the MIDC and Millon Index of Personality …
