Evaluating The Early Impact Of Ab 617: Air Pollution, Health Disparities, And Environmental Justice In California, Cherry Cheuk Lam Cheung, Adam Eckerd
School of Public Service Faculty Publications
This study evaluates the initial effectiveness of California’s Assembly Bill 617 (AB 617), enacted to address air pollution impacts in communities designated as environmental justice priorities, a policy approach that has recently been touted as a successful start. These claims of initial success stand in contrast to much of the research on remediation of environmental justice, particularly with respect to air pollution. Despite well-documented disparities in air pollution exposure and its health impacts among racial-ethnic minorities, previous policy efforts to mitigate these effects have had, at best, marginal effects. AB 617 mandates local air districts and the California Air Resources …

Reprogramming Of Immunometabolic Functions In Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells During Neuroinflammation: Insights From Ischemic Stroke And Sepsis, Shokofeh Rahimpourkaldeh
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Ischemic stroke and sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) are two distinct conditions that share common pathophysiological mechanisms affecting brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs). Ischemic stroke results from an acute reduction in cerebral blood flow due to thrombosis or embolism, leading to energy failure, oxidative stress, and blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction. SAE, a neurological complication of sepsis, arises from systemic inflammation, endothelial activation, and BBB disruption, leading to cognitive impairment and neuroinflammation. Despite their different etiologies, both conditions involve BMEC dysfunction as a central mediator of neurovascular injury. This dissertation aims to investigate the immunometabolic dysfunction of BMECs in ischemic stroke and sepsis, …

Using Visual Prompts To Analyze Ejection Fraction In Echocardiograms, Kevin Reisch
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is a critical biomarker for heart failure, but manual estimation from echocardiograms is time-consuming. Artificial intelligence can be used to accelerate this process, allowing clinicians to focus on other critical tasks. Current methods typically train models from scratch on echocardiogram datasets; however, this approach is limited by the scarcity of large medical imaging datasets, which are expensive and difficult to acquire. We present a transfer learning approach that leverages pretrained models from massive datasets, enabling continuous improvement as foundation models advance. Our method employs visual prompting to generate trainable masks for echocardiogram videos, transforming the …

Improving Neuromuscular Blockade Surveillance In Anesthesia Care With Quantitative Train Of Four Monitoring, Carley S. Blair
Improving Neuromuscular Blockade Surveillance In Anesthesia Care With Quantitative Train Of Four Monitoring, Carley S. Blair
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Problem Statement: Despite the availability of quantitative train of four (TOF) monitoring, anesthesia providers more frequently rely on tactile (qualitative) TOF monitoring, which is associated with underestimation of recovery from muscle relaxation. Inadequate recovery from muscle relaxants results in residual weakness and its associated complications in the postoperative period, including compromised respiratory function (Thilen et al., 2023).
Background: Neuromuscular blockade (NMB) drugs are required to facilitate endotracheal intubation and allow for surgical manipulation. When these drugs are used, train of four (TOF) stimulations are used to monitor and assess the depth and recovery from NMB. TwitchView monitors (quantitative monitoring) is …

Ultrasound measurement of the tendon occurred at baseline, midpoint, and completion of study, while adjusted one repetition maximum (Adj1RM) …
Towards Developing Glut2 Specific Probes For Biochemical And Biomedical Applications, Abdelrahman Ismail
Towards Developing Glut2 Specific Probes For Biochemical And Biomedical Applications, Abdelrahman Ismail
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Facilitated Glucose transporters (GLUTs) are membrane proteins responsible for the uptake of simple sugars and other structurally similar metabolites in all mammalian cells. One of the hallmarks of cancer is dysfunctional sugar metabolism, known as the Warburg effect, and one of the manifestations of that effect is abnormal GLUT expression. There are 14 known GLUT proteins with different expression patterns in different tissues, and tumors tend to express certain GLUTs that are not present in surrounding healthy tissue. Therefore, selective targeting of GLUTs presents a potentially powerful tool for diagnostics and treatment of cancer and other diseases. This has been …

Cyanine-Based Dual-Emission Sensor For Ratiometric Nad(P)H Imaging In Cells, Renal Tissues, And Entire Organisms, Peter Agyemang
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports
Monitoring the dynamic fluctuations of NADH and NADPH, key coenzymes in Intracellular redox homeostasis and bioenergetics, are essential for understanding both normal physiology and disease pathology. However, precise, real-time imaging of NAD(P)H levels in complex biological systems remains a major challenge due to interference from endogenous fluorescence and the limitations of intensity-based sensors. We present a newly engineered dual-emission fluorescent sensor, sensor A, which overcomes these obstacles by offering ratiometric detection with high specificity and sensitivity. The sensor features a 3-quinolinium moiety conjugated to a cyanine dye scaffold via an amine linker, enabling selective reactivity toward NAD(P)H. Upon reduction, …

INTRODUCTION
Clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) confers an increased risk of several chronic aging-related diseases. Paradoxically, CHIP was associated with lower risk of dementia in recent studies.
METHODS
We examined associations between baseline CHIP and incident mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and/or probable dementia in the Women's Health Initiative Memory Study. CHIP was detected using blood-based targeted sequencing. Cox proportional hazards models examined time to onset of cognitive impairment, adjusting for traditional risk factors.
RESULTS
Using a conventional variant allele fraction (VAF) threshold of 2%, CHIP was not associated with incident cognitive impairment. The presence of larger CHIP clone (VAF …

Background
Despite advancements in the therapeutic armamentarium for Crohn’s disease (CD), biologic and small molecule monotherapies are associated with sub-optimal response and remission rates. Utilizing dual biologic therapy (DBT) holds the potential to increase efficacy in the treatment of refractory or partially responsive CD. Evidence pertaining to this strategy remains limited. Methods
We retrospectively examined refractory CD patients treated with a combination of ustekinumab and vedolizumab. Outcomes to DBT at week (wk) 52 were compared to monotherapy. The primary outcome constituted corticosteroid-free remission. Secondary outcomes included adverse events, infections, hospitalizations, surgeries, treatment persistence, and disease clearance. Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Collaborative course (re)design (CCRD) allows faculty and students to redesign a course together that the faculty teaches and the student has previously taken. This process amplifies student voices and helps faculty better understand students’ perspectives. However, barriers such as faculty’s feelings of ownership, students’ hesitations to share feedback, and logistical challenges often discourage participation. This qualitative study explores the perspectives of students and faculty in the communication sciences and disorders discipline following their engagement in CCRD. Findings include shifts in participants’ teaching and learning perspectives, insight into partnership dynamics, logistical challenges of CCRD, and ideas for future CCRD implementation. This …
