The discovery of a relationship between ill health and defective teeth is by no means recent. It has received casual mention.in the older literature and has been independently recognized, perhaps for centuries, by practitioners of medicine and dentistry. The subject has not received the prominence it deserves, however, previous to the past decade. The earlier idea of such a relation was, however, limited largely to acute generalized infection from a wound, or surgical sepsis. Rarely a clinician had a wider conception of the possible effects of a local infection.

Porcelain dental art is that art of which is meant the actual working of the material porcelain , from the mixing of the body and colors to the final baking. It involves the making by the dentist of partial crowns (including inlays) and entire crowns of porcelain. It is in some degree , a return to the old vogue, when the dentist made the porcelain teeth which he mounted for his patients, but the present practice is upon a much higher plane, in which the artistic is one of the principle features.

Hemorrhage, or the discharge of blood from a ruptured blood vessel during life, constitutes one of the normal results of every operation of tooth extraction. In the majority of cases its control is simple, as it ceases within a short time and need be no cause for alarm. In exceptional cases, however, the discharge may be prolonged and excessive and cause, not only great anxiety to the dentist, but also much mental stress and a condition of extreme physical exhaustion to the patient. The gold inlay restoration has been used in dentistry for many years, the first ones being m~de by making a matrix of platinum or gold of about thirty-six to forty gauge in thickness, and then melting pure gold or solder of gold into the matrix. Many of these inlays are still doing good service after thirty to forty years of service. The determination of Calcium in the blood of Arthritic patients as an interesting problem was suggested by Doctor J. C. Metts, physician at the Sacred Heart Sanitarium from August 1927 to September 1930, and encouraged by Doctor F. W. Mackoy, present physician at the Sanitarium.

All the experimental work was carried on in the Laboratory of the Sacred Heart Sanitarium and all the specimens of blood were taken from cases present at the Sanitarium during the time of the writing of this thesis.

The Spleen Considered With Special Reference To Its Functions, Louis J. Schmidt

In arranging this thesis an attempt has been made to show that by virtue of its embryology, anatomy and histology, the spleen is the better enabled to carry out its alleged functions. The discussion here presented is confined to a story of the functions of the mammalian spleen alone. The similarities in the reactions of the spleen in the various mammalia is quite evident. Experimentation and observations were carried out on the lower mammalia while only the reactions of the splenectomized humans could be observed.
