Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic central nervous system disease of inflammation and demyelination. Presentation can vary tremendously but, typically, involves neurologic deficits, including weakness, pain, numbness and motor dysfunction. MS can also affect the dentoalveolar region. We describe a patient with MS who clinically presented with “electric” and “shooting, pulling” pain in the left maxillary region. The pain subsided following a course of gabapentin, leading to the diagnosis of trigeminal neuralgia secondary to MS. This report aims to review various common dentoalveolar manifestations of MS.

Background & Aims :This study used the Global Burden of Disease data (2010–2021) to analyze the rates and trends of point prevalence, annual incidence, and years lived with disability (YLDs) for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in 204 countries.

Methods :Total numbers and age-standardized rates per 100,000 population for MASLD prevalence, annual incidence, and YLDs were compared across regions and countries by age, sex, and sociodemographic index (SDI). Smoothing spline models were used to evaluate the relationship between the burden of MASLD and SDI. Estimates were reported with uncertainty intervals (UI).

OBJECTIVE

To validate the use of brain-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) for detecting and monitoring cardiac dysfunction in captive chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes).

METHODS

We analyzed cross-sectional (N = 175) and longitudinal (N = 76) BNP, echocardiogram, ECG, and pathology data from living and deceased captive chimpanzees to examine age and sex effects and to assess the usefulness of BNP for detecting cardiovascular disease and predicting mortality. The study period was from July 2010 through October 2024.

RESULTS

BACKGROUND: Current studies have examined the efficacy of opioid-sparing analgesics primarily in adult surgical populations, while fewer guide pediatric postoperative pain treatment. Caffeine exerts most of its biological effects by binding to adenosine receptors, which are important for modifying pain and inflammation. Caffeine's ability to modulate pain following posterior spinal fusion (PSF) for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has not been previously assessed.

METHODS: The hospital investigational drug study (IDS) pharmacy provided either a treatment dose or placebo dose of caffeine to be given to the patient and was also in charge of randomization for the study.

Background/Objectives: Inhalation of environmental particulate air pollution has been reported to cause pulmonary and systemic events including coagulation disturbances, systemic inflammation, and oxidative stress. Nerolidol, a naturally occurring sesquiterpene alcohol, has effective antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Background: Cardiomyopathy is a heterogeneous group of myocardial disorders characterized by structural and functional abnormalities of the heart muscle. It is classified into primary (genetic, mixed, or acquired) and secondary categories, resulting in various phenotypes including dilated, hypertrophic, and restrictive patterns. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, the most common primary form, can cause exertional dyspnea, presyncope, and sudden cardiac death. Dilated cardiomyopathy typically presents with heart failure symptoms, while restrictive cardiomyopathy is rarer and often associated with systemic diseases. Introduction: Physical exercise is a primary defense against age-related cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: We conducted single-nucleus transcriptomic and chromatin accessibility analyses (snRNA-seq and snATAC-seq) on the hippocampus of mice carrying mutations in the amyloid precursor protein gene (APPNL-G-F) following prolonged voluntary wheel-running exercise.

Results: Exercise mitigates amyloid-induced changes in transcriptome and chromatin accessibility through cell type-specific regulatory networks converging on growth factor signaling, particularly the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) signaling. Aims/hypothesis: Upregulation of serum leucine-rich α-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1) has been implicated in diet-induced obesity and metabolic disorders. However, its specific hormonal actions remain unclear. This study aimed to determine whether diet-enhanced serum LRG1 levels promote hyperinsulinaemia by directly stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells.

Methods: Human serum samples were obtained from individuals (both male and female) undergoing plastic surgery. Objective: Our objective was to evaluate antiretroviral therapy (ART) prescription rates over time among US Medicare enrolees with HIV and to describe disparities in ART prescription and associated factors.

Method: We constructed successive cross-sectional cohorts including adult enrollees with HIV and fee-for-service coverage and Part D enrolment in US Medicare between 2007 and 2019. We calculated the percentage of receipt of any ART prescription (ART%) in a calendar year by sex, age, and original Medicare entitlement and calculated age-sex standardized ART% over time. The modified Rodnan skin score (mRSS) is the current gold standard for diagnosing and staging skin fibrosis in SSc. Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematologic malignancy with a poor prognosis, often presenting with systemic and extramedullary manifestations. Leukemia cutis (LC), the infiltration of leukemic cells into the skin, is a rare and clinically significant complication of AML. It often signals extramedullary disease involvement, may precede systemic relapse, and is associated with poor survival outcomes. Background: Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) and X-linked protoporphyria (XLP) are characterized by the accumulation of protoporphyrin in the marrow, erythrocytes, plasma, skin, and liver, and present clinically with painful cutaneous phototoxicity. Liver abnormalities have been reported in over 25% of patients with EPP. Further characterization of liver involvement in protoporphyria is needed.

Methods: Patients with EPP or XLP enrolled in the longitudinal studies of the NIH-supported Porphyrias Consortium were included. Medical history, laboratory, and liver histology data were abstracted and described.

Recent findings: IIM is a rare group of autoimmune diseases characterized by muscle weakness and systemic involvement, with incidence rates ranging from 0.2 to 2 cases per 100 000 person-years. Background: Intravascular optical coherence tomography (IVOCT) adoption has been limited by the complexity of image interpretation. The interpretation of histologic subtypes beyond lipid, calcium, and fibrous is challenging to human readers. To assist and standardize IVOCT image analysis, we demonstrate an artificial intelligence algorithm based on a histology data set that identifies lipid pools, fibrofatty, calcified lipid, and calcified fibrous in human coronary arteries for the first time.
