Introduction

In the academic year 1959-1960 the National Science Foundation supported an undergraduate research program at Western: Michigan University for the spectrographic analysis of human hair. This preliminary work concerned itself with determining the quantities of magnesium, iron, and calcium in human hair. The hair samples were taken from a supposedly normal cross section of people. This group consisted of 41 women and 52 men. The ages varied from 2 to 72. Most of the hair samples were collected from a local barber shop and beauty shop, although a small portion of the samples was collected from individuals. Information concerning …

The purposes of this descriptive survey were to (1) find out if the incidence of bladder infection could be reduced by decreasing the number of postoperative catheterizations, (2) find out what the incidence of current methods of postoperative bladder evacuation were, (3) find out if and what changes had occurred in the incidence of the methods of bladder evacuation since the publication of previous studies, and (4) discover the current relationships of the methods of bladder evacuation to various factors such as age, sex, marital status, admission status, type of operation, and type and length of anesthesia.

The relationship between hypothyroidism and reading retardation was investigated among selected elementary school children for the purpose of contributing to data regarding the medical aspects of dyslexia in order to stimulate the interest of school health personnel. The experimental method was used to explore the hypothesis that a significant relationship exists between reading retardation and hypothyroidism.

Sixty-four underachievers in reading enrolled in one elementary school were selected for study. Physical examinations, laboratory tests, and individual psychometric measures were used to evaluate the physical and academic status of each of the study subjects. This study was directed toward an investigation of neonatal mortality of premature infant at a selected hospital. The sample included all premature infants who were born in and died at the selected hospital during the neonatal period between January 01, 1952 and December 31, 1959.

The epidemiological approach was used to study. The purpose of this study was to determine what problems beginning students of nursing have in establishing initial patient communication. A questionnaire was utilized to obtain the data.

The responses revealed that various feelings were experienced by the students when making the initial contact and establishing a communication with the patient. In most of the beginning contacts the students felt confident and at ease. Immediately following the initial contact the responses indicated that the students retained most of the positive feelings.

The purpose of this study was to eventuate the effectiveness of two commonly used cooling measures for reducing fever due to infection. Seventeen infants and children age six months to three years with a rectal temperature of 102 degrees or over were selected.

Due to improvements in fixation and embedding techniques a restudy of regenerating peripheral nerve was thought advisable in order to better understand and describe the processes which take place.

Femoral nerves of white Wistar rats were used. The lesions were made by either crushing or severing the nerve. After a period of regeneration, varying from 12 hours to six days, the wound was reopened and the injured portion fixed in situ with 1% osmium tetroxide. The tissues were then removed, dehydrated, embedded and sectioned. The sections were stained and studied with a modified RCA EMU2A electron microscope.
