The Background and Purpose of the Study

Introduction

Clinical experience as well as considerable research, which will be discussed later in this chapter, has shown that children are inconsistent in their misarticulation of speech sounds. Children who typically misarticulate a sound may, nevertheless, articulate the sound correctly in certain words. Several authors have suggested that these occasional correct productions of the usually misarticulated sound can be useful in therapy. For example, in a discussion of therapy techniques Van Riper (32, p. 273) has recommended the use of "key words" in helping a child correct his articulation errors:

Electromyographic Analysis Of The Temporal And Masseter Muscles During The Para-Retentional Period In Orthodontic Patients, Thomas L. Thompson

This study was initiated to compare electromyographically the activity of the masseter and temporal muscles during the early retentional period in orthodontic patients. Electromyographic recordings were taken at the following times: (1) before typical edgewise appliance was removed, (2) at time of retainer insertion, (3) after eight to twelve weeks of retainer wearing, and (4) one day following occlusal equilibration. Electromyograms from the orthodontic group of subjects were compared with electromyograms from a group of subjects with normal occlusion, and a group of subjects with untreated Class II, Division 1 malocclusions. Three hundred Swiss Webster albino mice three weeks of age were placed on low (8%), medium (24%), high (48%) protein levels and a commercial laboratory animal feed, Purina Chow for various lengths of time: (1) simultaneously with infection, and four weeks thereafter, (2) three weeks before infection and throughout the four-week infection period, and (3) six weeks prior to infection and during the infection period. The protein source was casein. Sixty of the 300 mice used served as noninfected controls, and the other 240 were each infected with 400 washed, suspended Trichinella spiralis larvae obtained from a rat by the …

A descriptive survey study was carried out at a selected baccalaureate school of nursing in an effort to find out if the maternal interest of senior students of nursing would affect their attitudes toward breast feeding. It was hypothesized that a student who scored high on maternal interest would have a positive attitude toward breast feeding and conversely a student who scored low on the maternal interest scale would have a negative attitude toward breast feeding. Maternal interest was measured by the use of twelve questions adapted from a questionnaire formulated by D. M. Levy, a prominent psychiatrist. Attitudes towards …

This study was conducted to find out if there was any significant difference in the effectiveness of two methods of treating ammoniacal diaper rash. The experimental method with parallel groups and a single variable was used. The instructions for hygienic measures were the same in the control and experimental groups. The variable was that the mothers of the infants of the experimental group used an ointment containing vitamins A and D in addition to the hygienic measures. A review of literature on diaper rash was done at the library on the Los Angeles campus of Loma Linda University. No study …

The Incidence Of Dental Caries, Periapical Root Resorption, And Alveolar Bone Loss Among The Navajo Indians Of Monument Valley, Utah, Ronald J. Fasano

In a pilot anthropometric study of 52 Navajo Indians of Monument Valley, Utah, the incidence of dental caries, permanent tooth periapical root resorption, and alveolar bone loss was assessed. The relationship of tooth malpositioning to the specific parameter was subsequently determined.

The sample was divided into arbitrary age groups.

Periapical roentgenograms were taken of each subject and were used in the assessment of dental caries, periapical root resorption, and alveolar bone loss. Data from a specially prepared examination sheet augmented the findings from the roentgenograms.

Tooth malpositioning and arch relationships were determined from the study casts. Occlusion was then classified. …

A random sampling of 54 Navajo Indians was examined and a selective group of 20 subjects presenting harmonious facial profiles and good occlusions were taken from this random sampling for specific comparison with Caucasian and other ethnic groups.

The methods used in this study are as follows: Plaster casts of Maxillary and Mandibular dental arches, profile photographs and lateral cephalometric X-rays. The cephalometric X-rays were traced in the standard manner on both Downs' and Riedel's analyses. Hospital personnel are becoming more aware of the fact that hospitalization is traumatic to the emotional life of the young child. Since eating habits and emotions are so closely allied, it is probable that the young child's eating pattern will be affected during hospitalization. The purpose of this study was to determine the reaction of children between the ages of one through four to food during the first three days of hospitalization at the White Memorial Hospital.
