This study is an extension of early observations that Negro women were free of vertebral fractures and had lower mean values for vertebral dimensions than white women. Skeletal dimensions should be considered in the further study of osteoporosis and its structural consequences, the authors state.

Treatment Of Hyperthyroidism From The Autonomous Multinodular Goiter, J. Martin Miller, Richard E. Weber, Melvin A. Block

47 patients with large multinodular goiters and "non-Graves" hyperthyroidism were treated surgically or given radioiodine therapy. The severity of the disease and cardiac complications were comparable in each group. Results favor subtotal thyroidectomy if the disease is other than mild or if atrial fibrillation is present.

This case history of a 45-year-old woman, who had been issued Dicumarol instead of Dronactin in a pharmacy-filled prescription, describes an emergency therapeutic program to control hemorrhage with vitamin K, adrenal corticosteroids, and the giving of fresh blood. In a patient with a bleeding disorder, unintentional ingestion of oral anticoagulants is to be suspected if the prothrombin time is markedly elevated, if the patient has been previotisly treated with an oral anticoagulant, or is engaged in a medical or paramedical occupation. Infection In The Newborn Infant And Its Association With Prolonged Rupture Of The Amniotic Membranes, Philip J. Howard, A. Robert Bauer

Infections in newborn infants should be suspected and treatment started whenever birth is prolonged following rupture of the membranes. These studies show that risk increases as rupture time gets longer. Selected antibiotics at proper dosages are recommended as preventive measures.

Normal and hypophysectomized rats were divided into equal homogeneous groups to determine the effect of cholestyramine, corn oil and cholesterol on the excretion of fecal bile acids and sterols. Bile acid turnover rates, pool sizes, and spectrums were studied and compared.

A Method Of Hospital Infection Surveillance Incorporating The Use Of The Computer, Bruce W. Steinhauer, Frank Cox, George H. C. Stobie, Edward L. Quinn

The records of all patients in the hospital on a particular date were studied for hospital-acquired infections. Results were compared with a continuing surveillance based on discharge reporting. Collection of data was programmed for analysis by using the hospital computer. Thirteen per cent of the patients manifested an infection after admission, but before or on the survey day. Results elsewhere are similar. Areas of the hospital with a relatively higher incidence of infection did not have clusters of particular pathogens.

Henry Ford Hospital Medical Journal

A study of 149 hamsters indicates that there are periods in life when the animal is immune to tumor induction by a known virus. By studying normal serum protein levels, standards were established for the adult age and for the tumor forming period. The data emphasize the importance of the immunologic status of the host for virus induction of tumors.

This study was concerned with finding out how much nursing personnel know about identifying signs of increased intracranial pressure and what understanding they have regarding the importance of prompt reporting of these signs.

A statement was prepared describing what the registered nurse, the license vocational nurse and the nursing assistant should know. This was validated by a panel of experts.

A two part questionnaire was developed from this statement. Part I asked for an essay response regarding the definition, causes, signs and symptoms and the nurse responsibility in intracranial pressure. Part II presented situations to which best answers were to …

A Cephalometric Study Of The Face And Dentition Of Several Contemporary Western United States And Alaskan Eskimo Groups, Robert C. Parkard

A total of 223 cephalometric radiographs selected from six contemporary western United States and Alaskans native groups were analyzed by use of the Bjork cephalometric analysis. Those native groups selected were the Eskimos, Apaches, Navajos, Papagos, Pimas and Mayos. Approximately thirty to forty natives from each group were used in the study with ages ranging from thirteen to thirty-five years. The majority were in the fifteen to twenty year age range.

The purpose of this study was to give a graphic portrayal of the gross changes in occlussal [sic] relationship and the spacial relationship of the bony elements of the mid-face region as produced by palatal expansive forces. The animal of choice was the Macaca mulatta monkey.

The intact skulls were measured following the invivo experiment. The skulls were then mounted in clear plastic and sectioned anteroposterior in order to study and measure the sections which revealed the third dimension perspective.

The effect of fluoride on the physical properties of the rat femur was investigated by using an Instron materials tester. Experimental animals consisting of 80 female weanling rats were employed. These were divided into two major groups of 40 rats each. Group I received adequate calcium in the diet and Group II received a low calcium (0.1%) diet. Group I and II were divided into five subgroups, the first subgroup being used as the control. An experimental research study was conducted on eighty-four patients in one part-pay clinic. The study was guided by the null hypothesis which stated that the patient who receives specific written information before the sigmoidoscopic exam reports the same discomfort as the patient who has not had this information. The purpose of the study was to compare the discomfort experienced by patients who received specific information about this examination with the discomfort; of patients who had not had this information. It was the purpose of this study to determine, from the literature, current practice in the use of bland diets, and from this information to prepare a booklet for use in instructing the ambulatory ulcer patient.

Ulcer regimens have been criticized in recent literature for being unnecessarily restrictive, ^{61, 68} and for employing a diet which is high in saturated fat. ^{16, 50}
