Background: Individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities may require dental care to be delivered while under general anesthesia, albeit there is often greater need for these services than hospital capacity allows.

Case Description: This case report presents a 19-year-old male with intellectual and developmental disabilities and numerous comorbidities who was able to be treated under general anesthesia in an academic dental surgery center by an interdisciplinary team. The accompanying discussion identifies strategies that dental teams and academic centers can consider to effectively provide care to patients with intellectual and developmental disabilities who require general anesthesia.

Background: Due to supply chain challenges, our institution transitioned from Pediatric Quadrox oxygenators to Nautilus oxygenators for neonatal and pediatric extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients. During this transition, variations in anticoagulation results were observed with bivalirudin, the first-line anticoagulant, in patients weighing less than 8 kg. This study aimed to evaluate heparin as an alternative anticoagulant in this patient population utilizing Nautilus oxygenators. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 29 neonatal and pediatric ECMO patients (weight range: 2.3–6.1 kg). The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread disruptions to education, with school closures affecting over one billion children. These closures, aimed at reducing virus transmission, resulted in significant learning losses, particularly in mathematics and science. Using United States data from TIMSS, this study analyzes the impact of school closure on learning outcomes. The losses amount to 0.36 SD for mathematics and 0.16 SD for science. The declines are similar across grades. The average decline in mathematics performance among U.S. students is substantially greater than the global average. n science, the decline observed among U.S. students does not significantly differ from the global …
