The experimental results in guinea pigs confirm Raekallio's findings. It is clear from the results that the enzyme reactions are the earliest detectable changes in the healing wounds. The non-specific esterase gives earlier staining reaction than any other enzyme studied so far. It is quite possible that a study of other enzymes may reveal even earlier detectable reactions.

Histamine And A Possible Unity Of Autonomous Microcirculatory Dilator Responses: Histamine And Autonomous Dilation, Richard W. Schayer

In this paper I will try to show how the proposed intrinsic dilator mechanism may, with due allowance for a variety of modifying factors, underlie the dilator phases of reactive hyperemia, post-exercise hyperemia, hyperemia due to local warmth, autoregulation, vasomotion, inflammation, and shock. These ideas are based on histamine studies (Schayer, 1962, 1963, 1966). However since there is much misunderstanding about histamine, and since the theory can be largely developed without need to identify the dilator, this paper will be presented in two parts. First, interpretation of the above phenomena in terms of intrinsic dilator mechanism will be attempted. Second, …

20% 5-Fluorouracil ointment in an acid mantle cream base is a useful tool for the treatment of multiple basal cell carcinomas and keratoses. The method of treatment to date is application twice a day for a period of 30 days. A second course of treatment can be applied to the same area or other areas. A more severe reaction occurs with the second and third course of treatment. The treatment removes the lesions which are present but in no way alters the skin, and those disposed to develop new lesions will probably continue to do so in the future.

Focal Glomerulonephritis, Robert H. Heptinstall

Focal glomerulonephritis is a form of glomerulonephritis in which only a certain number of glomeruli show lesions, the others being normal. It is a feature of most cases that the glomeruli affected show an involvement of only a portion of the tuft, a change that will be referred to as a local lesion. In general, focal glomerulonephritis can occur as a manifestation of well-recognized entities such as systemic lupus erythematosus, polyarteritis nodosa, subacute bacterial endocarditis, or Schönlein-Henoch syndrome; it can also occur apart from these diseases with a variety of clinical pictures (Heptinstall and Joekes, 1961).

Because an abortion is the interruption of pregnancy at any time previous to the attainment of viability by the fetus, it is of legal as well as social, economic, moral, and religious interest. Abortions are divided into three classifications: spontaneous, therapeutic, and unlawful or criminal. The first involves no specific legal problem in itself, but the law relating to the criteria for a therapeutic abortion and what distinguishes it from a criminal one confronts the physician and hospital frequently.

Taxonomic Review : Miridae Of The Nevada Test Site And The Western United States, Harry H. Knight

Approximately 5,000 specimens of plant bugs were collected at the Nevada Test Site between 1959 and 1965. Greatest emphasis was given to collecting from June 10–24, 1965, when the desert areas at the test site were unusually profuse with blooming vegetation. A total of 160 species representing 50 genera was taken at the test site. Of these, 7 genera and 96 species are new to science.

Comparative data for these and additional species from other parts of western North America are also included. These represent an additional 449 species, of which 5 genera and 148 species are new to science. …

The successful application of chronic dialysis and/or renal transplantation to patients with chronic uremia has sometimes obscured the fact that significant progress has also been made in our understanding of other therapeutic approaches to chronic renal failure. These less dramatic advances are commonly labeled "conservative" in nature, yet they have contributed decisively to the welfare of many uremic patients by improving their sense of wellbeing and delaying their need for such types of therapy as regularly repetitive dialysis. The Use Of A Computer In The Diagnosis Of Intracranial Tumours, G. H. Du Boulay

Experiments in the use of a computer as an aid to diagnosis of intracranial tumours have been started at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in collaboration with The City University. The computer can estimate the probability that a patient has any given type of tumour by comparing the results of tests with those obtained in previous patients whose diagnoses have been established. The computer also determines which is the best investigation, from a statistical point of view, to perform next on the patient in order to confirm the diagnosis.

An effort has been made to present a panoramic view of cirrhosis. It has been indicated that many agents may initiate an intrahepatic process which may progress to advanced cirrhosis, that the characteristic abnormalities may cause both functional and pathologic multi-system changes, and that these encompass almost every body structure. As the altered structural and physiological changes progress, hepatic decompensation develops, and this often is terminal.
