Several cases are presented which illustrate the indications and results of a relatively new procedure of intrathecal injection of radioiodinated human seruin albumin I 131 to demonstrate cerebrospinal fluid dynamics. This procedure has been used in conjunction with pneumoencephalography in the diagnosis of communicating hydrocephalus. A proper dose as well as adequate volume are necessary to obtain diagnostic scans.

Indigo carmine only recently was found to have a vasopressor effect. Intravenous injection in anesthetized and unanesthetized patients resulted in blood pressure elevation and bradycardia. This effect appears analogous to that of serotonin which indigo carmine structurally resembles. This drug should be used with caution in patients with cardiovascular disease.

It is a common observation that normal growth is affected or suppressed in young individuals by environmental adversities and physical disturbances. On the other hand, when health or favorable conditions are restored, the tempo of growth promptly accelerates as if the individual is trying to make up for the growth debt incurred. Tanner has referred to this increased growth rate after diseases or starvation as compensatory or 'catch-up' growth, a topic on which he has written eloquently and fully in a number of articles (1963a, b). He considers this compensatory growth as a 'self-stabilizing' or 'target-seeking' phenomenon in the regulatory …

The purpose of this study was to determine whether selected nurse-patient contacts effected the attendance of non-private patients at Preparation for Childbirth classes. During the data collection period only six of the eight patients who met the criteria for this study were available. Each of the six patients was reached by at least one of the three types of nurse-patient contacts-- a letter of invitation to the Preparation for Childbirth classes, weekly contacts with the patients at the classes and three home visits to each patient. This was a historical study of past ideas, beliefs, and practices in the nursing care of the normal newborn infant in the hospital nursery. The study covered the years 1930 to 1965 and was divided into four cross sections, namely, 1930 to 1935, 1940 to 1945, 1950 to 1955, and 1960 to 1965.

The primary sources used in this study consisted of one hundred infant medical records which were made available by a 382-bed, private, general hospital located in a Los Angeles suburb. One procedure manual used in this hospital during the years 1944-1955 qualified as a primary source. Personal …

This investigation was designed to serve as a research project directed toward the study of histopathological response of human teeth to the intentional implantation of threaded, stainless steel, gold plated pins into the vital pulp.

Pins of several types are currently used in several aspects of restorative and periodontal dentistry. In some cases there may be unintentional perforation of the dental pulp. In other cases it may be advantageous to purposely perforate the pulp for added retention. The purpose of this research is to help determine the reaction, possibilities, and prognosis of such technique.

A manual was prepared and evaluated for use by non-professional personnel in community nutrition education. Instruction and suggestions were given for organizing these classes and techniques outlined for food demonstrations. Material was written for lectures and tests on eight nutrition topics, with visual aid suggestions, recipes and "chatter" to accompany the recipes.

The material was tested by presenting three of the eight topics before audiences. Volunteer non-professional teacher-demonstrators gave the presentations which were evaluated by test scores from the audiences, by score forms from each teacher-demonstrator, and by evaluation sheets from the advisory committee.

Tissue response toward injection by a "fluid-pressure" type apparatus, the Mizzy Syrijet, was evaluated by using dogs as the experimental animal.

The tongue was the organ of choice because it's size is sufficient to allow for several injections without overlapping tissue responses. In addition the two halves of the tongue are anatomically separated by a median raphe, providing for further isolation of injections.

The animals were injected at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hour intervals utilizing the Syrijet on the right side of the tongue and needle on the left. Needle injection served as control for the microscopic comparison. …

Analgesic Effectiveness As Measured By A New Algesiometer, J. Raymond Wahlen

A method of measuring the effectiveness of analgesics using a new instrument, known as the Algesiometer,* is described. The instrument, utilizing an electrical stimulus, produced an experimental pain when attached to the skin over the mid shaft of the tibia. The patient, who was experiencing a pathological pain, gradually increased the experimental stimulus, by turning a control rheostat, until it was equal in intensity to the pathological, or clinical, pain. The intensity of the stimulus was calculated in milliwatts and consisted of a rectangular wave pulsating direct current of approximately one millisecond duration and an interval of nineteen milliseconds.

The purpose of this study was to investigate cranial and facial bone growth in the puberal Macaca mulatta monkey over a six month period utilizing the methods of metallic implantation combined with serial cephalometric roentgenography and a bichromatic vital staining method.

The employment of the vital stains, alizarin Red S and anthracene blue, over the six month period of the study, failed to stain the actively growing bone as evidenced by gross and microscopic analysis of the undecalcified bone preparations.

Human teeth mounted in individual plaster blocks were studied to determine the actual location of the root canal filling when it appears to be exactly at the radiographic apex. The original sample consisted of 109 teeth treated during endodontic technique class by junior dental students at Loma Linda University. In the most ideal manner possible, these teeth were radiographed on a flat surface with the x-ray tube perpendicular to the film and blocked tooth.

Five dentists examined the radiographs, and each one independently listed the canals he judged filled exactly to the radiographic apex. The investigator sorted out the choices …

The nature of epithelium and the remarkable facility with which it aggressively covers granulation tissue, suggests that removal of the sulcular epithelium surrounding the extraction wound of a tooth to be replanted could promote reattachment of the periodontal tissues at a more nearly ideal coronal level. To investigate this hypothesis twenty mature teeth in five mongrel dogs were experimentally replanted. One half of them were replanted in alveoli around which the crevicular epithelium had been removed, the remaining teeth without creviculoectomy acting as controls. The primary objective of this study was to quantitatively address the three following questions:

1. Does orthodontic treatment when administered to the adolescent patient produce changes in his or her body-image and self-concept?

2. In which areas of the body does the patient experience changes in body image after orthodontic treatment?

3. What significance or value does the patient place on orthodontic treatment relative to changes in the subject's life?

In seeking answers to the above questions, a questionnaire was given to a group of 138 male and female orthodontic patients.

The purpose of this study was to determine changes that occur in the craniofacial complex, when a heavy interrupted orthopedic force is employed to retract the maxilla in the post puberal rhesus monkey. Cephalometric, histologic and anatomic examinations were utilized to substantiate the findings.

Four female rhesus monkeys were used for experimentation. Two were experimental animals and the other two controls. Cervical retraction with headgear was applied over a period of 313 days and 159 days to the two experimental animals. Forces not exceeding 2.5 lbs. were found most effective.

Its basic assumption is that personal predispositions of marital partners as well as the social context of their marriage influences marital intimacy particularly the partner's readiness to communicate verbally with each other about important attitudes and feelings.

This study evaluates the role of the Neighborhood Health Coordinators (NHC's) within Kaiser Foundation's Comprehensive Neighborhood Health Services (CNHS) Project. This project was established in September 1967, under the provisions of the 1966 amendments to the Economic Opportunity Act, to provide and make readily available comprehensive medical care to low-income persons. In compliance with the stipulations of this Act, persons who reside in target areas, designated as depressed neighborhoods, were hired to serve as NHC's. These indigenous non-professionals serve as links or "gatekeepers" between the low-income persons enrolled in this program, and the Kaiser medical care facilities which include the …

The present research was directed toward gaining a clearer understanding of the relationships between the location of brain injury and relative auditory and visual input abilities of adults by submitting selected subjects to comparable procedures requiring the auditory and the visual input of stimuli. Two tests, the Geometric Figures Test (GFT) and the Token Test (TT), were developed as a means of obtaining measures of auditory input ability and visual input ability. The adrenal glands, located in man near the superior poles of the kidneys. were described by Eustachius in 1563, and named by him the glandulae renibus incumbentes. It was not, however, generally appreciated until about three centuries later that they were vital organs. In 1855, Thomas Addison of Guy's Hospital, London, first described a syndrome which he observed in certain of his patients, and which he associated with bilateral lesions of the adrenal glands. In recognition of his early description, the disease has since been named "Addison's disease". Patients suffering from Addison's disease showed a high degree of morbidity and …

A B S TR A C T Prostaglandin E₁ (PGE₁) at a concentration of 1 ng/ml antagonized theophylline, and norepinephrine induced release of glycerol and free fatty acids (FFA) in human fat cell preparations. Insulin at higher doses also inhibited theophylline-stimulated lipolysis. The N₆-2-O^'dibutyryl derivative of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (DCAMP) stimulated lipolysis. Prostaglandin E1 did not significantly inhibit the lipid mobilizing effects of DCAMP. Changes in glycogen phosphorylase activity after treatment with theophylline, norepinephrine, DCAMP, and PGE₁ paralleled those of lipolysis. These results suggest that in man as in experimental animals lipolysis …
