Recognition Of The Asthmatic Componnent Of Respiratory Failure, John L. Guerrant Jan 1973

Recognition Of The Asthmatic Componnent Of Respiratory Failure, John L. Guerrant

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Respiratory failure from various causes is occasionally associated with or confused with asthma. Therefore, asthma should be considered and looked for in all patients with respiratory failure. Sputum eosinophilia when present is the most important indication that asthma may be important. Steroids used early and aggressively are usually indicated and effective.

Newer Techniques In Clinical Cytology: Aspiration Biopsy And Brushing Cytology, William J. Frable Jan 1973

Newer Techniques In Clinical Cytology: Aspiration Biopsy And Brushing Cytology, William J. Frable

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Since its introduction some twenty years ago the Papanicolaou technique for cervical-vaginal cytology has had a tremendous impact on the detection of precancerous lesions and in situ cancer in the female genital tract. It has forced the clinician and pathologist to study the "early lesions" of cancer, particularly in the female genital tract and has brought about a better understanding of their biology. Cytology has over the years been extended to other areas, particularly the respiratory tract. Two recent areas of emphasis are the thin-needle aspiration biopsy and direct brushing of mucosal surfaces through the various fiber optic scopes now …

Bedside Assessment Of Left Ventricular Function In The Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, Clifton L. Parker Jan 1973

Bedside Assessment Of Left Ventricular Function In The Respiratory Intensive Care Unit, Clifton L. Parker

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The measurement of the central venous pressure is a widely used technique for gaining information concerning the relationship of the blood volume as it relates to cardiac function. This concept has been widely popularized, and the central venous pressure measurement is extremely useful; however, it has too frequently been thought to be a direct measurement of cardiac function.

Commercial And Reference Laboratories, George J. Carroll Jan 1973

Commercial And Reference Laboratories, George J. Carroll

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

In summary, there are now in existence many good commercial and reference laboratories. I would use those laboratories with which you are most familiar, where you know the staff, those which can demonstrate reasonable speed in testing and can assure good quality testing and control at what you feel is a reasonable cost to the patient.

Introduction To The Phasic Effects Of The Vagus On Sinoatrial And Atrioventricular Nodes, Gordon Moe Jan 1973

Introduction To The Phasic Effects Of The Vagus On Sinoatrial And Atrioventricular Nodes, Gordon Moe

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I want to emphasize that the vagus has effects upon both the sinus node and the A-V node. It slows sinus discharge, and it depresses, delays, or blocks atrioventricular transmission. It is also known that under certain conditions that discharge of vagal fibers to the heart may be phasic. From the physiological standpoint, it ought to be phasic, particularly at slow heart rates. The reason it should be phasic is that when the systolic pulse wave arrives at the baroreceptor regions of the aorta and of the carotid sinuses, it elicits a discharge of afferent fibers in those regions which …

Some Important Factors In Community Dialysis Program, Allan A. Hoffman Jan 1973

Some Important Factors In Community Dialysis Program, Allan A. Hoffman

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The purpose of this paper is to acquaint physicians who are not nephrologists with the experience of one of their colleagues in the operation of a hemodialysis service as a part-time endeavor. My intention is not to present detailed or advanced scientific data on dialysis techniques or on the care of chronic renal failure but to discuss how and under what circumstances the urologist, internist, or general physician might significantly augment the present treatment care system for end-stage chronic renal disease. I will attempt to describe a mode and philosophy of operation applicable to the community hospital and private practice …

Prostatic Acid Phosphatase: A Potpourri, Charles W. Moncure Jan 1973

Prostatic Acid Phosphatase: A Potpourri, Charles W. Moncure

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

I would first like to discuss this enzyme, reviewing some of its chemistry, its clinical value and the pitfalls and problems associated with the routine tests. Then I would like to tell about some work in which we have been involved that we hope will increase the diagnostic value of this enzyme and perhaps point the way to advances in clinical enzymology in other areas.

Genetic-Metabolic News Jan 1973

Genetic-Metabolic News

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

This is the first in a series of newsletters designed to inform the Virginia medical community of recent advances in the area of genetics and metabolism and to provide information regarding a variety of services that are available at the Medical College of Virginia. The number, complexity and expense of tests that are now required in order to make precise diagnoses in many of the newly described genetic and metabolic disorders make it impossible for most clinical pathology laboratories to provide these services.

Verbal Sequencing Ability As A Predictor Of Reading Disability, Paul Elmer Quin Jan 1973

Verbal Sequencing Ability As A Predictor Of Reading Disability, Paul Elmer Quin

Dissertations and Theses

Early identification of children with reading and learning problems seems imperative. By using early identification predictors, a high risk group of children with possible reading problems could be located. This would facilitate placement and appropriate educational strategies for this group of children. By proper placement and planning, educators then would be able to set up remedial and/or preventive programs for these children before the pattern of unsuccessful attempts and improper training becomes irreversible. This study was designed to determine if verbal sequencing ability was a valid predictor of reading ability for a group of 31 preschool children. Secondarily, the investigation …
