Reaction Of Brain Hexokinase With Tetranitromethane: Oxidation Of Essential Thiol Groups, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare Jan 1977

Reaction Of Brain Hexokinase With Tetranitromethane: Oxidation Of Essential Thiol Groups, Subbarao Bondada, Umakant W. Kenkare

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Treatment of bovine brain mitochondrial hexokinase with a fivefold molar excess of tetranitromethane (TNM) at pH 8.0 results in a complete loss of activity of the enzyme. Spectral measurements and amino acid analysis showed that only cysteinyl residues were modified by TNM under these conditions. The products of the reaction of TNM with the enzyme were cysteic acid and disulfides as found by amino acid analysis of the carboxymethylated hexokinase. Failure of 2-mercaptoethanol to reverse the effect of TNM suggested that the thiol group that is oxidized to cysteic acid is the one essential for enzyme activity. Substrates glucose and …

Electronic Cell Pattern Recognition Manual, Agatha Rollins Jan 1977

Electronic Cell Pattern Recognition Manual, Agatha Rollins

Theses

Agatha Rollins’ 1977 master’s project, Electronic Cell Pattern Recognition Manual, explores the feasibility of using the Technicon Hemalog "D" Differential Analyzer as a diagnostic tool for hematologic diseases. The analyzer identifies white blood cell types through electronic signals based on their scatter and absorbance patterns in the peroxidase channel. Rollins hypothesized that similar diseases would yield consistent, recognizable electronic patterns, enabling identification without manual microscopy.

The project involved analyzing patients with various conditions—including chronic lymphocytic leukemia, myeloperoxidase deficiency, eosinophilia, and several leukemias—by comparing manual differential counts with Hemalog “D” results. Rollins documented and evaluated x-y display signatures for each …

The present program of research, therefore, was designed to attempt to gain new insights into the possible etiology of inflammatory states - for when new information concerning the etiology of these diseases states becomes available, more meaningful screening procedures for anti-inflammatory drugs will certainly be devised. Two preliminary studies have been published.

The Modification Of Smoking Behaviour: A Research Evaluation Of Aversion Therapy, Hypnotherapy, And A Combined Technique, Herman Surkis Jan 1977

The Modification Of Smoking Behaviour: A Research Evaluation Of Aversion Therapy, Hypnotherapy, And A Combined Technique, Herman Surkis

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study compared aversion therapy, hypnotherapy, and a combined method. It was predicted that the treatment of imagined behaviour would generalize to overt behaviours. Individuals were randomly assigned to one of three groups: the aversion group with shock contingent on imagined behaviour, and finally the combined group which consisted of traditional hypnotherapy in combination with aversion therapy. The treatments were contained on separate cassettes with each subject receiving his appropriate cassette. Subjects met in groups of 3-5 individuals, twice a week for three weeks. Individuals acted as their own controls through the establishment of a pre-treatment baseline of smoking rate. …

Effects Of Operant Conditioning Of Cooperative Play On Non-Reinforced Behaviors In Severely And Profoundly Retarded Adults, Martha Wade Aenchbacher Jan 1977

Effects Of Operant Conditioning Of Cooperative Play On Non-Reinforced Behaviors In Severely And Profoundly Retarded Adults, Martha Wade Aenchbacher

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

A group of seven severely and profoundly retarded adults from a sheltered workshop program were trained in cooperative play (basketball skills and hand clapping) using social and edible reinforcement and fading procedures. The generalization effects of the training on non-reinforced (undesirable) behaviors in an extratraining setting was investigated. A reversal technique in which the reinforcement was temporarily withdrawn demonstrated the reliable functioning of the training procedures. Independent observers recorded target behaviors during five phases: Baseline; Training; Generalization Testing; Extinction; Generalization Testing. The rate of undesirable behaviors decreased significantly in the extra-training setting (activity room) following the training phase. The findings …

Ryegrass Disease Could Spread, Department Of Agriculture, Western Australia

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The disease annual ryegrass toxicity kills sheep and cattle grazing pastures which contain infected annual ryegrass. In Western Australia the first confirmed outbreak was in 1968 in the Gnowangerup area.

The disease has noe spread over a range of 450 kilometres and with a total area of perhaps 100 000 hectares. because annual ryegrass is the major sown pasture grass in W.A. the disease could spread throughout the South-West.

There are some precautions that can be taken.

Interactions Of Ethanol And Methadone, Vijay Aggarwal Jan 1977

Interactions Of Ethanol And Methadone, Vijay Aggarwal

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of ethanol administration on the antinociceptive activity, lethal properties and brain concentration of methadone, were investigated. The effect of ethanol on the antinociceptive activity of methadone was assessed by the hot-plate and tail-flick tests. Concentrations of methadone in the brain were determined by the use of 3H-methadone as well as by gas liquid chromatographic analysis. The study showed that moderate doses of ethanol did not alter tail-flick or hot-plate response by themselves. However, when combined with methadone, ethanol produced a significant increase in the antinociceptive effectiveness of methadone as measured by both a decrease in the ED50 of …

Noise Induced Hearing Loss, R Moulds Jan 1977

Noise Induced Hearing Loss, R Moulds

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

Most farmers have heard about noise induced hearing loss and many take sensible precautions. But a significant number of farmers still find some excuse for not wearing ear-muffs of using protective devices to conserve their hearing when exposed to loud noise.

This article describes the nature of the problem and states the reasons why hearing protection should be used whenever exposure to loud noise is unavoidable, especially when driving a tractor.

Molecular Mobilities Of Soluble Components In The Aqueous Phase Of Chromaffin Granules, Edward P. Richards, Robert R. Sharp Jan 1977

Molecular Mobilities Of Soluble Components In The Aqueous Phase Of Chromaffin Granules, Edward P. Richards, Robert R. Sharp

Journal Articles

NMR relaxation times have been used to characterize molecular motion and intermolecular complexes in the aqueous phase of bovine chromaffin granules. Partially relaxed '3C and proton spectra have been obtained at 3 and 25°C. T1 measurements of five protonated carbons on epinephrine (C:, Cs, C6, CHOH and NCH3) give a correlation time of 0.15 (10 -9) s at 25°C for the catechol ring and methine carbon, while the effective correlation time for the NCH3 group is somewhat shorter due to its internal degree of rotational freedom. Resonances of protonated carbons on the soluble protein chromogranin give very similar correlation times: …

Analysis Of The Carbon-13 And Proton Nmr Spectra Of Bovine Chromaffin Granules, Edward P. Richards, Robert R. Sharp Jan 1977

Analysis Of The Carbon-13 And Proton Nmr Spectra Of Bovine Chromaffin Granules, Edward P. Richards, Robert R. Sharp

Journal Articles

Natural abundance carbon-13 and proton NMR spectra of bovine chromaffin granules have been obtained and analyzed using computer simulation techniques. High resolution spectra show the presence of a fluid aqueous phase containing epinephrine, ATP and a random coil protein. The protein spectrum conrains unusually intense resonances due to glutamic acid and proline and has been simulated satisfactorily using the known amino acid composition of chromogranin A.

The lipid phase of chromaffin granules gives rise to intense, but very broad, resonances in the carbon-13 spectrum. Protons in the lipid phase are also observable as a very rapid component of the proton-free …

A Study Of Factor B Of The Early School Personality Questionnaire(Espq) As A Valid Measure Of General Mental Ability, Claude S. Iles Jan 1977

A Study Of Factor B Of The Early School Personality Questionnaire(Espq) As A Valid Measure Of General Mental Ability, Claude S. Iles

Electronic Theses & Dissertations

This study investigated the validity of the general ability factor, Factor B of the Early School Personality Questionnaire(ESPQ), in two ways. First, validity coefficients for Factor B were obtained by computing product-moment correlation coefficients between the ESPQ Factor B raw scores of 40 developmentally disabled subjects and their raw scores on the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-Revised (WISC-R). Second, the Kruskal-Wallis rank sums test and a distribution-free multiple comparisons test were employed to determine if there were significant differences among the mean ESPQ Factor B raw scores of subjects designated as mentally retarded, learning disabled, or normal. Specifically, it was …

The Biochemistry Of Vascular Smooth Muscle In The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, John Edward Taylor Jan 1977

The Biochemistry Of Vascular Smooth Muscle In The Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat, John Edward Taylor

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Cyclic adenosine 3’,5’-monophosphate (cAMP) was first described as the mediator of the glycogenolytic effect of epinephrine and glucagon in the liver almost two decades ago. It has since been found that cAMP may mediate the effects of a number of hormones and neurohormones, and this observation has led to the development of the second messenger hypothesis of hormone action. According to the second messenger theory, the hormone or first messenger brings information to the cell, whereas, the second messenger (cAMP) transfers this information into intracellular events. More recent evidence has described the existence of an additional second messenger, cyclic guanosine …
