The Effect Of Preoperative Instruction And Unit Orientation On Selected Postoperative Factors Of Nonemergency Critical Care Surgical Patients, Sharon Stephens Espersen
The Effect Of Preoperative Instruction And Unit Orientation On Selected Postoperative Factors Of Nonemergency Critical Care Surgical Patients, Sharon Stephens Espersen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The intensive care unit's effect on the patient has become a subject discussed often by nurses and other health team members. One of the nursing interventions that has been implemented to attempt to de crease the potentially harmful environmental effects of the ICU on the patient is orienting the patient about what to expect prior to the ICU admittance.
A major problem is that most intensive care unit (ICU) patients are admitted to the unit on an emergency basis. Few studies, therefore, have focused on the effects of preoperative instruction of ICU patients. The studies that have been done were …
Effect Of Time And Diet On The Immune Status Of Mice Challenged With Herpes-Transformed Cells, Daila S. Gridley
Effect Of Time And Diet On The Immune Status Of Mice Challenged With Herpes-Transformed Cells, Daila S. Gridley
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Human Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2)-transformed Balb/c mouse cells (H238 cells) are malignant in Balb/c mice. The immune stratus of mice bearing H238 cell-induced tumors was studied and changes in immune response with time and with altered diet of the mice were measured.
In the experiments dealing with the status of immunity with time after tumor cell injection, mice were fed Purina Laboratory Chow (P.L.C.), injected with H238 cells, and sacrificed three to eight weeks post-injection. In the diet experiments, groups of mice were fed either P.L.C. or one of six equicaloric diets, consisting of low or high …
The Effect Of Perceptual Set On Listener Judgments Of Voice Quality Deviations, Patricia M. Hansen
The Effect Of Perceptual Set On Listener Judgments Of Voice Quality Deviations, Patricia M. Hansen
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to test the possible influence of perceptual set on listeners' judgments of voice quality deviations. Perceptual set was created by instructions given to an experimental group which limited their choices, thus encouraging a particular response. The effect of set on the overall performance of the group, on backward versus forward voice samples and on the level of experience of the listener were all investigated.
The sample for this study was comprised of 24 students of speech pathology and audiology. The subjects were divided into matched experimental and control groups and asked to listen to …

The Effect Of The Warm Water Bath On Axillary Temperature In Normal Newborns, Ann J. Morton
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of the warm water bath and the radiant heater on the axillary temperatures of normal newborns. The sample group consisted of thirty newborns--15 babies placed into the water bath in Group I, and 15 babies placed under the radiant heater in Group II. Birth weights were between 6.25 and 8.75 pounds, gestational ages between 37 and 41 weeks, and 5-minute Apgar scores were 8 or more. The maternal temperatures, taken within two hours before birth, ranged between 97 and 99 degrees. All infants were born by spontaneous or low-forceps vertex …
Computer Modeling Of Cardiac Electrical Activity By Polarcardiogram Patterns, Daniel K. Berry
Computer Modeling Of Cardiac Electrical Activity By Polarcardiogram Patterns, Daniel K. Berry
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The objective of this thesis is to provide for the cardiologist polarcardiograms and additional diagnostic criteria which will enable him to diagnose heart disease more easily. Other contributions are those of: (a) providing a system of data acquisition and (b) analyzing Dr. Gordon Dower’s criteria for myocardial infarction using the programs provided in this thesis.
The problem inherent in the reading of a polarcardiogram is the identification of the "loop" patterns with the associated heart disease. This can be accomplished by reading and interpreting both vectorcardiograms and electrocardiograms as well as angiograms, then relating the interpretation to the polarcardiogram patterns. …

Living And Acting In An Altered Body: A Phenomenological Description Of Amputation, Mary Jo Deegan
Living And Acting In An Altered Body: A Phenomenological Description Of Amputation, Mary Jo Deegan
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Adults with recent amputations are often perceived as suffering from post-operative depression and phantom limbs. These states are frequently seen as failures in "adjustment" since there are often few physiological involvements which curtail daily functioning. This perspective is seen as compatible with major American values of pragmatism, individualism, and a mechanistic medical model. We suggest here that problems in daily living and the phantom limb are not "mental" aberrations but rather reflections of a radically altered lived experience. The performance of the actor is significantly changed and can be discussed as a function of changed experience, and style. This persppctivedraws …
The Stability Of Expanded Mandibular Canines, Premolars, And Molars Concomitant With Rapid Midpalatal Expansion, Ralph S. Kurti
The Stability Of Expanded Mandibular Canines, Premolars, And Molars Concomitant With Rapid Midpalatal Expansion, Ralph S. Kurti
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The view of not expanding mandibular canines to accommodate incisor crowding because of the fear of relapse of of the incisors has been generally accepted in orthodontics for many years. Most studies that have investigated expanded mandibular canine stability have concluded that they could not be permanently expanded to any degree. By adding another variable (rapid midpalatal expansion) to canine expansion it was thought that this might possibly increase canine expansion stability.
The purpose of this research was to determine if the stability of the expanded canines through 1st permanent molars was enhanced by concomitant rapid expansion of the midpalatal …
The Effect Of High Protein, Low Pyridoxine Diet On Calcium Retention In Rats, Julia S. Bottom
The Effect Of High Protein, Low Pyridoxine Diet On Calcium Retention In Rats, Julia S. Bottom
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
The effect of increasing the dietary protein and pyridoxine level on calcium balance and bone strength was studied in growing and adult rats. The loss of calcium due to urinary excretion of o-phosphoryl-ethanolamine on a high protein diet was also examined.
Three studies were conducted. In the first adult male rats were fed 40% protein diets with high or low pyridoxine or a low protein, low pyridoxine diet. Calcium balance and femur bending stress were determined. In the second study male weanling rats were given either 10 or 63% protein with 0.40 or 0.73% pyridoxine. Calcium and phosphorous balances were …

Glutamine Transport, Metabolism, And Ammoniagenesis In Rat Kidney, Jose Punnakudyil George
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Thie purpose of these studies was to clarify the functional significance of glutamine penetration and metabolism in postnatal increas1e in renal a1T111onia production using rat kidney slices .
Glutamine uptake, metabolism and ammoniagenesis were studied in kidney slices isolated from mature, gonadectomized males and females, and newborn rats in the presence of varying concentrations of glutamine. Slices isolated from mature intact females showed significantly higher conversion of 14C-glutamine into 14co2 and NH3 without any change in total uptake compared to all other experimental groups. Ovariectomy reduced CO2 and NH3 production without any effect on …

Inactivated Equine Rhinopneumonitis Virus Vaccine And Use Thereof, John T. Bryans
Veterinary Science Faculty Patents
An inactivated viral vaccine for protecting horses against disease caused by equine rhinopneumonitis virus is prepared by propagating an equine rhinopneumonitis virus in a susceptible, cloned, diploid equine cell line, harvesting the resulting virus in a serum-free medium, inactivating the virus and neutralizing the inactivating agent, concentrating the virus, and adding an immunological adjuvant thereto. A vaccination program to protect horses against the equine rhinopneumonitis virus is also disclosed.
Intellectual Performance As A Function Of Repression And Menstrual Cycle, Paula Englander-Golden, Keith A. Willis, Richard A. Dienstbier
Intellectual Performance As A Function Of Repression And Menstrual Cycle, Paula Englander-Golden, Keith A. Willis, Richard A. Dienstbier
Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications
Performance on complex (Space Relations and Verbal Reasoning) and simple (Digit Symbol) tests was investigated as a function of Byrne's Repression-Sensitization (RS) dimension, phase of menstrual cycle and premenstrual-menstrual (PM) symptomatology in a group of females not taking oral contraceptives. Two control groups, consisting of males and females taking oral contraceptives, were included. Equivalent tests were given at two sessions two weeks apart. Analysis of the Space Relations Test as a function of menstrual phase and Repression-Sensitization indicated the predicted interaction effect of phase by RS with poorest performance for the menstruating repressor group (p < .02), but the predicted deterioration by the premenstrual repressor group was not observed. Similar analysis for the Verbal Reasoning Test yielded an interaction effect of phase by RS (p < .03) and a main effect for phase (p < .05). As predicted, differences on the Digit Symbol test did not reach significance. Substituting PM symptomatology for RS, a significant effect was obtained only for phase on Verbal Reasoning Test (p < .05). Results were interpreted as indicating a reactive nature of repression, so that during menstruation, repression may interfere particularly with performance on complex tasks. The three subject groups did not differ significantly on any of the three tests; however, trends in the present data corroborated those quoted in the literature.

The Wavelength Dependence Of Ultraviolet Enhanced Reactivation In A Mammalian Cell-Virus System, Leslie C. James
The Wavelength Dependence Of Ultraviolet Enhanced Reactivation In A Mammalian Cell-Virus System, Leslie C. James
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
The effect of ultraviolet (UV) radiation in the wavelength region 230 nm to 302 nm on the ability of an irradiated mammalian cell to reactivate UV-irradiated mammalian virus was tests. An action spectrum for radiation enhanced reactivation (RER) Is presented. The shape of the action spectrum points to a combined nucleic acid protein target for UV radiation effects on this cellular parameter. An analysis of the results of others involving the biochemical and photobiological events involved in the RER does not allow the identification of the macromolecule which is the major contributor to this effect. Studies involving an analogous phenomenon …
