The Effects Of Counselor Age, Sex And Attire On Client Preferences For Counselors, Alan Leonard Zohner May 1979

The Effects Of Counselor Age, Sex And Attire On Client Preferences For Counselors, Alan Leonard Zohner

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The purpose of this study was to determine the preferences, if any, subjects have for counselors based on counselor characteristics of age, sex and attire. Photographs were taken of persons of differing ages (old, middle-age, young), sex (male, female) and attire (formal, casual, grub). One-hundred and five college and noncollege adults were shown the photographs, asked to perceive the photographs as being those of counselors, and asked to rank their preferences for the persons depicted as counselors using a modified Q sort methodology. To determine whether the subjects had actually perceived the photographs as representing counselors and, therefore, discriminated among …

The Incidence Of Lactose Malabsorption Among Cache Valley Young Adults, Eileen Donna Cowles May 1979

The Incidence Of Lactose Malabsorption Among Cache Valley Young Adults, Eileen Donna Cowles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Twenty-four young adults, ages 18 to 30, from Cache Valley were studied to determine the incidence of lactose malabsorption. Lactose malabsorption was determined by a two-hour oral lactose tolerance test. The criteria for a malabsorber was a flat glucose curve in which there was a rise in serum glucose less than 20 mg. per 100 ml. above the fasting level. Four of the subjects were found to be lactose malabsorbers. The incidence of lactose malabsorption was determined to be 16.67 per cent. A 95 per cent confidence interval for this study indicated that the actual percentage could be expected to …

Isolation Of Bacteriophage Resistant Lactic Culture Strains With Known Temperature Sensitivity, Luna Ying-Chung Jeng May 1979

Isolation Of Bacteriophage Resistant Lactic Culture Strains With Known Temperature Sensitivity, Luna Ying-Chung Jeng

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Seven strains of Streptococcus cremoris and Streptococcus lactis were tested for temperature sensitivity on a temperature gradient bar. A temperature of 37 C was the optimum for differentiating between temperature-sensitive and insensitive strains. Temperature-insensitive strains produced cell masses with absorbance values of 0.1 or higher and activity levels of 1.0 (expressed as a decrease in pH) or above at 37 C. Temperature-sensitive strains failed to produce these cell masses and activity levels.

Strain selection and resistant-mutant isolation made it possible to identify ten strains of Streptococci sufficiently free of phage sensitivity for use in a cheese plant rotation program. These …

Relationship Of Environmental Chromium And Zinc Levels To Tissue Chromium And Zinc Levels From Individuals With Maturity Onset Diabetes Mellitus In Selected Watershed Areas Of Utah, Carol H. Williams

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study was conducted to determine whether a functional relationship exists between human tissue and environmental levels of chromium and/or zinc and in individuals with maturity onset diabetes.

Three counties of Utah were selected as sites:

1. Wayne County, where a State Health Department screening had shown a 12.7 percent incidence of diabetes, and, where there is very little industry, and an assumed low level of environmental chromium and zinc

2. Utah County, where the diabetic screening had shown an 0.75 percent incidence of diabetes and where there is nearby large industry and an assumed higher level of zinc and …

A Comparison Of Traditional Grass-Twist Backstops To One Of Corrugated Cardboard Design Use On Indoor Ranges, Charles T. Crume Jr. Apr 1979

A Comparison Of Traditional Grass-Twist Backstops To One Of Corrugated Cardboard Design Use On Indoor Ranges, Charles T. Crume Jr.

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This study presents the results of a comparison of traditional grass-twist backstops frequently used on indoor ranges with one of corrugated cardboard design. The findings indicate that the corrugated cardboard design is substantially superior.

The four factors selected for testing were:

  1. Arrow pass-through levels and subsequent arrow repair costs
  2. Arrow penetration levels, tested over several distances and using several bow weights
  3. Arrow-stopping potential with beginning and inexperienced archers
  4. Storage

Testing showed the first three factors supporting the corrugated cardboard design. The last factor, storage, was found to be about equally supportive of both designs.

Several recommendations are made. These recommendations …

Classification Of Support Staff In A Consortium Medical Library: A Case Study, Sally Pollak, Richard A. Lyders

Library Press and Events

A representative committee of Houston Academy of Medicine-Texas Medical Center Library staff and faculty, under the direction of the library administration, successfully redesigned a job classification system for the library's nonprofessional staff. In the new system all nonprofessionals are assigned to one of five grade levels, each with a corresponding salary range. To determine its appropriate grade level each job is analyzed and assigned a numerical value using a point system based on a set of five factors, each of which is assigned a relative number of points. The factors used to measure jobs are: education and experience, complexity of …

Autocorrelation In Behavior Modification Data, Suzanne M. Girman Apr 1979

Autocorrelation In Behavior Modification Data, Suzanne M. Girman

Masters Theses

Many methodologists claim that autocorrelation in intra-subject designs is a pervasive and critical problem necessitating complex statistical analyses to determine the existence of an intervention effect. In this study, autocorrelation, coefficients were found for a large sample of graphed data in the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis. Results indicate that there is minimal, negative autocorrelation for most of the data analyzed (-.04). This result suggests the presence of autocorrelation in the intra-subject designs analyzed is of no practical significance, and thus is not the problem some methodologists have assumed it to be.

Health And The Search For Equitable Access: An International View, William A. Norwood Apr 1979

Health And The Search For Equitable Access: An International View, William A. Norwood

Theses

This thesis explores the concept of equitable healthcare access by comparing health systems in Sweden, Great Britain, the Soviet Union, and China, providing insights into their structures, policies, and outcomes. The analysis focuses on four critical aspects: hospitals, doctors’ practice locations, payment mechanisms, and accessibility. It highlights Sweden’s state-supported insurance system, which combines public planning with private enterprise, emphasizing universal accessibility and preventive care. Great Britain’s National Health Service is examined for its universal, tax-funded healthcare model, with an emphasis on general practitioners and community-based care. The Soviet Union’s centralized health system is noted for prioritizing industrial and maternal health, …

A Scale For Assessing The Severity Of Diseases And Adverse Drug Reactions: Application To Drug Benefit And Risk, Ronald J. Tallarida, Rodney B. Murray, Carl Eiben

Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers

Physicians were interviewed to assess their willingness to risk adverse drug reactions among patients. These untoward reactions were ranked according to severity and weighted against the primary illness being treated. A specially designed questionnaire in the form of a matrix was used. Severity was divided into seven classes denoted by progressively increasing numerical scores, W1 to W7, whose values could be calculated from analysis of the completed questionnaires. The questionnaires presented several cases, in each of which an illness of specified severity was to be treated with a drug whose untoward reactions differ in severity from that …
