Attenuation Of Exercise-Induced Bronchospasm By Ascorbic Acid, Alan Schlesinger

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

[From the Materials and Methods section] Eleven asthmatic subjects (4 male, 7 female) and ten healthy subjects (8 male, 2 female) without history of wheezing or asthma were recruited and informed consent was obtained. In order to select asthmatics with mild disease, members of the university and hospital community were chosen, avoiding the often more severe asthma of hospitalized and clinic patients. None of our subjects had been hospitalized for their asthma and none required corticosteroids. Each subject completed a detailed questionnaire concerning the presence of respiratory symptoms, allergies, and exercise induced bronchospasm (EIB). The subjects' anthropometric data and responses …

The Process Of Short-Term Psychotherapy With Mentally Deficient Adults, Joan Emily Carpenter Jan 1980

The Process Of Short-Term Psychotherapy With Mentally Deficient Adults, Joan Emily Carpenter

Dissertations and Theses

This paper explores the process of individual short-term ego-supportive psychotherapy with mentally deficient adults. The literature on clinical research, case studies, process research, short-term psychotherapy, and therapy with the mentally retarded is selectively reviewed. Four case studies are presented with clients at the Portland Habilitation Center, a sheltered workshop which trains mentally deficient adults in socialization, practical living, and job skills. Finally, the case studies are discussed in terms of the selected literature.

Hanover Street: An Experiment To Train Women In Welding And Carpentry, Peggy Antrobus, Barbara Rogers Jan 1980

Hanover Street: An Experiment To Train Women In Welding And Carpentry, Peggy Antrobus, Barbara Rogers

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Hanover Street Project, formally known as the United Women’s Woodworking and Welding Project, is an experiment in training women for jobs usually held only by men. Begun in 1976, this was the first such program of the Jamaica Women's Bureau, established by the government during International Women's Year to ensure that women participate fully in Jamaica’s development. The project demonstrated that low-income women can learn non-traditional skills and can work together to improve their lives. Through trial and error, the project is providing the Women's Bureau with a wealth of information about teaching technical skills, working with other government …

Village Women Organize: The Mraru Bus Service, Jill Kneerim Jan 1980

Village Women Organize: The Mraru Bus Service, Jill Kneerim

Poverty, Gender, and Youth

The Mraru Women's Group in rural Kenya, like many community women's organizations around the world, is an example of a deeply rooted tradition of association and self-help among women. In 1971 the group began to gather its resources to solve a common problem—transportation. They raised money, bought a bus, and began a public transport service that made money; they now face other difficult questions such as reinvesting profits, serving members' broader needs, and maintaining a strong economic base. The Mraru Women's Group has shown unusual creativity and persistence in identifying common needs and organizing to meet them. They have also …

1980 Beef Cattle Report, Leo E. Lucas Jan 1980

1980 Beef Cattle Report, Leo E. Lucas

Nebraska Beef Cattle Reports

Weighing steers three consecutive days at the beginning and end of the trial reduced variation and increased the probability of detecting a difference in daily gain and gain/protein ratios between treatments when compared to a standard weighing method (once at the beginning and once at the end of the trial). Regressing 1 initial, 1 final and 11 weekly weights also decreased variation and increased the probability of detecting treatment differences compared to the standard method, but was more variable than using three weights at the beginning and end of the trial.

Young, growing steers and lambs supplemented with natural protein …

Connections Of The Mesencephalic Locomotor Region (Mlr) In The Cat, E. Garcia-Rill, Robert D. Skinner, S. A. Gilmore

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

The cat entopeduncular nucleus (EN), which is the main output of the basal ganglia, is known to project to the mesencephalic tegmentum. We have been able to elicit antidromic responses in single EN neurons from the region of the mesencephalic locomotor region (MLR), then transect (precollicular-postmamillary) the brainstem and elicit rhythmic movements of the limbs by stimulation of the same site in the same animal. Injections of the fluorescent dye 2,4 diamidino phenylindole 2 HCL (DAPI) into this area induces retrograde labeling of cell bodies in EN and motor cortex. Injections of a tritiated amino acid (leucine) into the motor …

Case Study #4: Kirk, Rhea Paul Jan 1980

Case Study #4: Kirk, Rhea Paul

Communication Disorders Faculty Publications

This last of the four case studies is adapted from a working paper completed by Rhea Paul. It was one of the first attempts to use the NPA procedure as a research tool. This extended case study is more lengthy than the previous three case studies and organized differently. It is included here because it nicely illustrates the discovery procedures that clinical researchers must undertake to more fully understand associations between speech and language.

The Effect Of Cochlear Dysfunction On Central Auditory Speech Test Performance, Barbara Ann Goldstein Jan 1980

The Effect Of Cochlear Dysfunction On Central Auditory Speech Test Performance, Barbara Ann Goldstein

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

The major purpose of this study was to explore the effect of cochlear dysfunction on central auditory speech test performance. There has been limited research reported concerning the effects of peripheral hearing loss occurring in the absence of central auditory pathology on tests specifically designed to diagnose central auditory impairment. Similarly, there has been limited research reported concerning the effects of peripheral hearing loss in the presence of central auditory pathology on tests designed specifically for the evaluation and diagnosis of central auditory pathology. Despite the lack of such data, these tests are frequently performed on individuals with cochlear pathology, …

China's Revolution In Health, Norman Miller, James C. Strickler Jan 1980

China's Revolution In Health, Norman Miller, James C. Strickler

Dartmouth Scholarship

China today is in the midst of a peaceful revolution that is dramatically changing the very nature of that vast country. Since the death of Chairman Mao and the political demise of the *Gang of Four," there has occurred a major re-emphasis on change and Western technology. To achieve their political goals the new regime, under Chairman Hua Kwo-Fenj, has emphasized "four modernizations": science, industry, national defense, and agriculture. Health and medicine are seen as a part of the scientific arena. The planned changes in this sector will plunge China into a Western form of technology that will certainly have …

Children's Responses To Medically Induced Discrete, Acute Pain, Brenda D. Ballard Jan 1980

Children's Responses To Medically Induced Discrete, Acute Pain, Brenda D. Ballard

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

Three experiments were carried out with children in a private office on the measurement of distress caused by allergy treatment injections and on a behavioral technique to alleviate this treatment-induced distress. In Experiment 1 a rating scale to measure observable indices of distress with children receiving injections was developed and its construct validity and reliability determined. In Experiment 2, norms were derived for the sample of children studied and the nature of the expression of distress according to age and sex was examined. In Experiment 3 two treatments for alleviating the treatment-induced distress, (a) sensory information, and (b) systematic reinforcement …

Differential Effects Of Serotonin Antagonists On Hypothermia And Stereotyped Behavior Induced By Apomorphine And Lergotrile In Rats, Rolin Lee Wade Jan 1980

Differential Effects Of Serotonin Antagonists On Hypothermia And Stereotyped Behavior Induced By Apomorphine And Lergotrile In Rats, Rolin Lee Wade

University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations

The naturally occuring ergot alkaloids of the fungus, Claviceps purpurea, and their many derivatives have been of neuropharmacological interest for many years because of their ability to affect peripheral and central adrenergic and serotonergic systems. More recently, selected compounds such as lergotile (2-chloro-6-methyl ergoline-8-beta acetonitrile) and and bromocriptine (2-bromo-alpha-ergocryptine), have been given additional attention due to their possible therapeutic potential in the treatment of parkinson’s disease, acromegaly and other disorders. There have been considerable data published attempting to establish the mechanism(s) whereby the ergot compounds exert their effects. A large portion of these experiments involves the interaction of ergot compounds …
