Nsmr: Its Image, Direction And Future, J. Russell Lindsey Jan 1980

Nsmr: Its Image, Direction And Future, J. Russell Lindsey

Experimentation Collection

The point I wish to emphasize is that NSMR, like all of its predecessors representing the scientific community, has consistently maintained a defensive posture while claiming that a// practices of animal use and care within the biomedical community have been "lily white." In my judgment, this has been a major tactical error because abuses of freedoms to use animals in research too frequently have been and continue to be common knowledge (e.g., Science, Editorial, 1976). NSMR's complete unwillingness to face up to these realities and torespond positively to the public's legitimate concerns has led to the inevitable loss of credibility …

Definition Of The Concept Of "Humane Treatment" In Relation To Food And Laboratory Animals, Bernard E. Rollin Jan 1980

Definition Of The Concept Of "Humane Treatment" In Relation To Food And Laboratory Animals, Bernard E. Rollin

Animal Welfare Collection

The very title of this talk makes a suggestion which must be forestalled, namely the idea that laboratory and food animals enjoy some exceptional moral status by virtue of the fact that we use them. In fact, it is extremely difficult to find any morally relevant grounds for distinguishing between food and laboratory animals and other animals and, far more dramatically, between animals and humans. The same conditions which require that we apply moral categories to humans rationally require that we apply them to animals as well. While it is obviously pragmatically impossible in our current sociocultural setting to expect …

Amputation Of Vibrissae In Show Dogs, Thomas E. Mcgill Jan 1980

Amputation Of Vibrissae In Show Dogs, Thomas E. Mcgill

Veterinary Science and Medicine Collection

Dogs of many different breeds competing in the show-ring are routinely subjected to amputation of the vibrissae, organs that are commonly and incorrectly called "whiskers." This procedure is thought to give the animal's head a cleaner look, which in turn supposedly increases its chances of winning. There are several tricks involved in "whisker trimming" since the animals can retract each vibrissae at least one-quarter inch. Furthermore, they often object strenuously to the operation.

Ethology And Laboratory Animal Welfare, James A. Cohen Jan 1980

Ethology And Laboratory Animal Welfare, James A. Cohen

Laboratory Experiments Collection

At its annual conference, held this June at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, the Animal Behavior Society (ABS) passed a resolution opposing HR 4805, a bill which would establish a National Center for Alternative Research to develop and coordinate alternative methods of research and testing which do not involve the use of live animals. The ABS, which represents some 1750 North American animal behavior researchers, took issue with the bill on the grounds that: a) it discourages replication of previously-obtained results, b) there are currently no satisfactory substitutes for live animals in behavioral research, c) it would complicate and …

Pain-Infliction In Animal Research, Dorothy Tennov Jan 1980

Pain-Infliction In Animal Research, Dorothy Tennov

Experimentation Collection

A summary of research outlining the main sources of pain and stress to animals in laboratories provides the background for the results of a survey conducted by the author on how students feel about experimentation involving animals. The psychological aspects of student reaction to animal experimentation are examined. The conclusion outlines specific recommendations on ways to minimize pain and discomfort of laboratory animals.

Management Of High-Risk Gravida, Shelby Jarrell Jan 1980

Management Of High-Risk Gravida, Shelby Jarrell

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Comprehensive prenatal care has become the hallmark of modern obstetrical practice. Awareness by both physicians and patients that such care is necessary for satisfactory perinatal outcome has led to the establishment of an obstetrical subspecialty, Maternal Fetal Medicine, to provide a higher level of prenatal care and to increase our knowledge of perinatal events. Many of the management techniques currently being used for high-risk pregnancies can be readily applied to the routine obstetrical population. The additional physician time and laboratory tests required are minimal, and the early identification and prevention of perinatal complications will eliminate the need for “crisis” medicine.

Contraception Versus Sterilization, Thampu Kumarasamy Jan 1980

Contraception Versus Sterilization, Thampu Kumarasamy

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

The World Health Organization reported that 40% of the pregnancies in the world in 1977 were unplanned and 20% were unwanted; in the United States in 1978 there were 1,300,000 teenage pregnancies, of which one million ended in abortions. To prevent these unwanted pregnancies and also to abolish the cost in terms of money, time and lives, conception control is very important. Contraception is as old as the human race. In ancient times Chinese women swallowed live tadpoles three days after their menses for this purpose. North African women mixed gunpowder solution and foam from a camel’s mouth and drank …

Cervical Cytology And Colposcopy, W. Glenn Hurt Jan 1980

Cervical Cytology And Colposcopy, W. Glenn Hurt

MCV/Q, Medical College of Virginia Quarterly

Colposcopy was first described by Hinselmann of Hamburg in 1925. The colposcope is a binocular microscope of low power (10x to 25x) which contains a light source and is mounted on a stand to permit its use in the study of the surface of the uterine cervix. Using the colposcope, the physician can identify and evaluate cervical epithelial abnormalities.

The Location Of Olfactory Receptor Sites. Inferences From Latency Measurements, T. V. Getchell, G. L. Heck, J. A. Desimone, S. Price Jan 1980

The Location Of Olfactory Receptor Sites. Inferences From Latency Measurements, T. V. Getchell, G. L. Heck, J. A. Desimone, S. Price

Physiology and Biophysics Publications and Presentations

Excitatory responses recorded from vertebrate olfactory sensory neurons are characterized by long latencies compared with those from other sensory receptors. Explanations which assume free access of the stimuli to receptor molecules presumably located on the olfactory cilia necessarily imply an intrinsic delay in the transduction mechanism. In contrast, the possibility of restricted or delayed access due to diffusion of the stimulus to molecular receptors located on the dendritic knob or proximal portions of the cilia suggests transduction processes having time courses similar to those in other sensory systems. We show that the threshold stimulus concentration and the latency of the …

Screening Of Clovers For Resistance To Clover Scorch, D. L. Chatel

Experimental Summaries - Plant Research

Clover Scorch (Jointly with Dr C.M. Francis). One thousand four hundred and seventy six legumes were screened in the field at the Denmark Research Station for susceptibility to clover scorch. They comprised 1440 subterranean clovers, eight other Trifoliums, two medics and 26 serradellas. The clovers from Australia gave interesting results. Thirty four of them were selections of Seaton Park, chosen by R.C. Rossiter and W. J. Collins on the basis of their variation. They did not differ in their reaction to clover scorch; all gave rating of 9. Twenty-six lines of Woogenellup from W.A. and 12 of Woogenellup and Morrar …

Acid Lipase Deficiency And Lipid Storage In Wolman's Disease And E600-Treated Cells In Culture, Martin George Bialer Jan 1980

Acid Lipase Deficiency And Lipid Storage In Wolman's Disease And E600-Treated Cells In Culture, Martin George Bialer

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Fibroblasts obtained from a child with Wolman’s disease and maintained in culture demonstrated acid lipase deficiency, reached senescence prematurely and exhibited an abnormal #5 chromosome. When cytogenetic analysis was repeated on frozen and stored cells, the chromosomal defect could no longer be demonstrated, but other anomalies were present. The karyotypes of other Wolman’s disease cell cultures and the parents of the proband were normal. The mother’s fibroblasts had reduced acid lipase activity, consistent with a carrier-state, but the father’s fibroblasts had normal acid lipase activity. It was possible to classify a culture as Wolman’s disease, carrier or normal by the …

Rabbit Erythropoiesis In Vitro, K. G. M. Brockbank Jan 1980

Rabbit Erythropoiesis In Vitro, K. G. M. Brockbank

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The erythropoietin (Ep) dose response of erythroid colony-forming units (CFU-e) and erythroid burst-forming units (BFU-e) from rabbit bone were similar to murine erythroid precursor Ep requirements. Bone marrow and peripheral blood contained a continuum of erythroid precursors at differing stages of maturation. The earliest BFU-e were assayed on day 10. CFU-e were observed in bone marrow, but not in peripheral blood. The most mature erythroid precursors observed in peripheral blood were intermediate BFU-e, assayed on day 5. A linear relationship exists between the number of nucleated bone marrow cells plated and the number of 3 day colonies and 10 day …

Activation Of Long Descending Propriospinal Neurons In Cat Spinal Cord, Robert J. Adams, Robert D. Skinner, Ronald S. Remmel Jan 1980

Activation Of Long Descending Propriospinal Neurons In Cat Spinal Cord, Robert J. Adams, Robert D. Skinner, Ronald S. Remmel

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

Isolated mammalian spinal cord has been shown capable of generating locomotor activity. Propriospinal systems assumed to coordinate fore- and hindlimb activity are poorly understood. This study characterizes the long descending propriospinal (LDP) neurons in terms of the location of the somas and their peripheral inputs by direct neuronal recording. Anatomical studies using axonal retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase from the lumbar to the cervical spinal cord as a tracer first described these neurons. Two hundred and thirty-one LDP neurons were identified in electrophysiological experiments. Of these, 123 responded to natural stimulation, and about 50% of the others were activated only …
