Art Therapy As A Means Of Ego Enhancement For Severely And Profoundly Mentally Retardedk, Kimberly Riemer
Art Therapy As A Means Of Ego Enhancement For Severely And Profoundly Mentally Retardedk, Kimberly Riemer
Theses
Kimberly Riemer’s thesis, Art Therapy as a Means of Ego Enhancement for the Severely and Profoundly Mentally Retarded (1981), explores the impact of art therapy on individuals with severe and profound mental retardation. The study was conducted as part of a six-month practicum, during which Riemer worked with both children and adults in a specialized educational and vocational setting.
Drawing from psychological theories, particularly those of Erik Erikson, Riemer argues that ego development is crucial for mentally retarded individuals. She hypothesizes that if art therapy can aid emotionally disturbed individuals, it should also benefit those with cognitive impairments. Through structured …

Paternal Childbirth Satisfaction And Locus Of Control, Jane Darany
Paternal Childbirth Satisfaction And Locus Of Control, Jane Darany
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
A comparative study was done to evaluate the relationship of paternal childbirth satisfaction to locus of control. The purpose of the study was to measure locus of control and satisfaction with the childbirth experience and to determine what factors or events influence childbirth experience among fathers.
The sample consisted of 34 first-time fathers whose ages ranged from 20 to 40 years. Four were unmarried and 30 were married. All had attended childbirth education classes with the mother and all were present at the delivery. The hypotheses were: Null: Fathers' satisfaction with the childbirth experience is independent of their locus of …
The Effects Of Maxillary Quad-Helix Appliance Expansion On Cephalometric Measurements In Growing Orthodontic Patients, Steven Wesley Frank
The Effects Of Maxillary Quad-Helix Appliance Expansion On Cephalometric Measurements In Growing Orthodontic Patients, Steven Wesley Frank
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
This study was conducted to examine the effects of maxillary quad-helix expansion on frontal and lateral cephalometric measurements in growing orthodontic patients. Twenty subjects, nine girls and eleven boys (x age = 10 years, 3 months), each exhibiting at least a unilateral posterior lingual cross-bite that had been treated with a maxillary quad-helix appliance, were selected for this study. Posterior-anterior and lateral cephalometric radio graphs were taken at the beginning of treatment (T1), when the appliance was removed (Tprog' x time = nine months) and at retention (T2) and subsequently traced. The T1 …
Bioavailability Of Calcium, Fluoride And Iron In Mechanically-Deboned Beef Fed To Growing Rats, Kathryn Mclaughlin
Bioavailability Of Calcium, Fluoride And Iron In Mechanically-Deboned Beef Fed To Growing Rats, Kathryn Mclaughlin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Weanling rats were fed diets containing raw lyophylized hand-deboned shank beef (HDS) supplemented with CaCO3, retorted lyophylized mechanically deboned shank beef (MDS), or raw lyophylized MDS. Ca in the latter two diets originated from bone during the mechanical deboning process. Ca absorption, Ca retention, bone weight, and bone breaking strength were similar for comparative dietary levels of Ca regardless of the source. Bone ash and Ca content was significantly higher (P < .05) in the MDS 393 (3.93 g Ca/kg diet) diet and in the retorted MDS 460 diet compared with the HDS 488 diet. Relative biological values for the MDS diets calculated relative to the HDS diets ranged from 102 to 132 when the linear regression of Ca consumed, Ca retained, or dietary Ca level vs bone ash or bone Ca content was obtained. The retorted MDS 460 diet contained the highest Fe level and exhibited a lower percent absorption, terminal hemoglobin level, and liver Fe storage. Humerus F content increased as dietary F (also present from bone) level increased. Dietary F level did not determine humerus breaking strength.

The Effects Of Weekly Or Biweekly Clinical Problem-Solving Supervision On Symptoms Of Burnout In Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurses, Jane M. Bacon
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The syndrome of burnout, which involves negative emotional, psychological, and physical reactions to continuous, work-related stress, is becoming a widely-recognized job hazard for employees in health care settings. The main objective of this retrospective and descriptive study was to investigate the effect of weekly or biweekly, clinical, problem-solving supervision on the following symptoms of burn out on psychiatric/mental health nurses: absenteeism, job turnover rate, job performance ratings. The sample consisted of two groups of psychiatric/mental health nurses who were employees of a major midwestern, private psychiatric treatment facility. The problem was to determine whether the occurrence or reduction of the …

The Effect Of Individual Instruction Versus Group Instruction On Compliance In C.O.P.D. Patients, Renee L. Hills
The Effect Of Individual Instruction Versus Group Instruction On Compliance In C.O.P.D. Patients, Renee L. Hills
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Because of the evolution of hospitals from general care to acute care centers, the need for more outpatient therapy programs had increased in an effort to aid patients in managing their health care at home. As a result, health care professionals were concerned with the extent to which patients would follow their medication and treatment programs. Marston estimated that approximately 30 to 35 percent of patients fail to follow their physicians' medical recommendations (Marston, 1970).
Discovering a means of insuring patient compliance was a prevalent concern in the nursing and medical professions. Previously we had attempted to blame noncompliance on …

A Comparison Of Boone-Prescott Content And Sequence Analysis Data Of Poorly And Highly Rated Clinician-Client Interactive Skills, Kathleen M. Noonan
Dissertations and Theses
One of the qualifications for being a competent speech and language clinician is to be skilled in interactional procedures within a clinic setting. A clinician's interactional skills are developed through training whereby one participates in several clinical settings with clients displaying a variety of speech, language and hearing disorders. Various evaluation methods, both subjective and objective, have been utilized in guiding the clinician towards interactional competency.
Interactional analysis systems have been designed to provide more objective feedback. The Boone-Prescott Content and Sequence Analysis System (B-P) is one of several such systems. Although this system has been found to be an …
Isolation Of Plasma Membrane From Human Neutrophils And Determination Of Cytochrome B And Quinone Content, Edward P. Sloan, Dana R. Crawford, Donald L. Schneider
Isolation Of Plasma Membrane From Human Neutrophils And Determination Of Cytochrome B And Quinone Content, Edward P. Sloan, Dana R. Crawford, Donald L. Schneider
Dartmouth Scholarship
Analyses of plasma membrane and other subcellular fractions indicate that the primary location of cytochrome b in human neutrophils is not the plasma membrane. The procedure developed for the purification of plasma membrane from fresh human neutrophils yielded a 14-fold enrichment in the marker enzyme 5'-nucleotidase and a 10-fold enrichment in ouabain-sensitive ATPase. On sucrose density gradients, the peak density of 5'-nucleotidase activity was 1.12 g/ml, and was shifted after digitonin addition to 1.15 g/ml. Protein in the plasma membrane equalled approximately 8 percent of the whole cell protein. A b-type cytochrome was found to be present in the plasma …
An Investigation Of Observer Evaluation Accuracy Of Clinical Sessions, Douglas Scott Peterson
An Investigation Of Observer Evaluation Accuracy Of Clinical Sessions, Douglas Scott Peterson
Dissertations and Theses
Student speech-language pathologists begin their academic preparation as observers. Observations of the clinical management session are for the purpose of providing student clinicians with insight into the management process by providing clinical models. To make observation experiences meaningful there must be some guiding framework which will demonstrate the significance of behaviors observed. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effect Boone-Prescott Content and Sequence Analysis System (B-P) instruction had upon the accuracy of beginning student observation evaluations of clinical management sessions.

Developmental Sentence Scoring Sample Size Comparison, Marilyn May Valenciano
Developmental Sentence Scoring Sample Size Comparison, Marilyn May Valenciano
Dissertations and Theses
Assessment of language abilities is an integral part of accruing information on the development of concept formation and the learning of grammatical rules. The maturity and complexity of a child's language can be assessed through the use of a language sample. The sample consists of a specified number of utterances which are emitted spontaneously and then analyzed according to a given procedure.
The purpose of this study was to determine if there is a significant difference among the scores obtained from language samples of 25, 50, and 75 utterances when using the DSS procedure for ages 4.0 through 4.6 years. …

Presented in this paper is research designed in part to show that although moderate running by well-trained runners plays a significant role in reducing stress response to subsequently introduced stressors, running at the level of marathon competition alters psychological and physiological dispositions in a manner not conducive to reduced stress responses. In these demonstrations, the choice of our psychological and physiological dependent measures was guided by a larger theoretical framework concerning the relationship of exercise to temperament. We will discuss this larger view first because it provides a theoretical perspective that is useful in considering our specific hypotheses. We believe …

The Ongoing Art Therapy Interview Process In A Psychiatric Milieu, Vivian A. Ware
The Ongoing Art Therapy Interview Process In A Psychiatric Milieu, Vivian A. Ware
Theses
This paper presents the development and application of the Ongoing Art Therapy Interview (OATI), a structured approach designed to assess and support patients in a psychiatric day hospital setting. The OATI combines the therapeutic and diagnostic dimensions of art therapy by integrating artwork with guided interpersonal dialogue. It is informed by Harry Stack Sullivan’s interpersonal theory of psychiatry, particularly his diagnostic framework for understanding patient experience, communication, and relational patterns.
The study outlines the theoretical foundations of the OATI, its practical procedures, and its role as both a therapeutic intervention and an evaluative tool. In this model, patients produce visual …
